Sam Altman at TED 2025: The Future of AI and OpenAI

TED 2025 Conference - AI and Technology Session

00:00:00-00:00:05
HOST: Sam, welcome to TED. Thank you so much for coming.
00:00:06-00:00:08
SAM_ALTMAN: Thank you. It's an honor.
00:00:09-00:00:15
HOST: Your company has been releasing crazy, insane new models pretty much every other week, it feels like.
00:00:16-00:00:25
HOST: I've been playing with a couple of them. I'd like to show you what I've been playing. So, Sora, this is the image and video generator.
00:00:26-00:00:35
HOST: I asked Sora this. What will it look like when you share some shocking revelations here at TED?
00:00:36-00:00:40
HOST: Do you want to see how I imagined it? I mean, not bad, right?
00:00:41-00:00:45
HOST: How would you grade that? Five fingers on all hands?
00:00:46-00:00:55
SAM_ALTMAN: Very close to what I'm wearing, you know? I've never seen you quite that animated. No, I'm not that animated of a person. So, maybe a B+.
00:01:30-00:01:45
SAM_ALTMAN: Yeah, the new image generation model is part of GPT-40, so it's got all of the intelligence in there. And I think that's one of the reasons it's been able to do these things that people really love.
00:02:15-00:02:30
SAM_ALTMAN: I mean, if I'm a management consultant and I'm playing with some of this stuff, I'm thinking, uh-oh, what does my future look like?
00:03:00-00:03:15
SAM_ALTMAN: You can say, oh, man, it's doing everything I do. What's going to happen to me? Or you can say, like through every other technological revolution in history, okay, now there's this new tool.
00:05:45-00:06:00
HOST: In our opening session, Carol Cadwallader showed, you know, ChatGPT give a talk in the style of Carol Cadwallader, and sure enough, it gave a talk that wasn't quite as good as the talk she gave, but it's pretty impressive.
00:08:30-00:08:45
SAM_ALTMAN: So right now, if you use our image gen thing and say, you know, I want something in the style of a living artist, it won't do that.
00:12:15-00:12:30
SAM_ALTMAN: I think open source has an important place. We actually, just last night, hosted our first, like, community session to kind of decide the parameters of our open source model.
00:15:45-00:16:00
SAM_ALTMAN: I think the last time we said was 500 million weekly actives, and it is growing very rapidly.
00:20:30-00:20:45
SAM_ALTMAN: The thing that I'm personally most excited about is AI for science at this point. I think, I am a big believer that the most important driver of the world and people's lives getting better and better is new scientific discovery.
