SPEAKER_00 00:00 - 00:05

Joseph R. Biden, 46th President of the United States.

SPEAKER_00 00:05 - 00:11

His has been a challenging, complicated term of office, quite literally, from day one.

SPEAKER_00 00:11 - 00:20

He's reflecting on the stakes for this election and on his legacy with Chief Election and Campaign Correspondent, Robert Costa.

SPEAKER_03 00:21 - 00:23

We're living through history.

SPEAKER_03 00:23 - 00:24

We really are.

SPEAKER_03 00:25 - 00:26

Let's begin with your decision.

SPEAKER_02 00:27 - 00:28

You're at your home.

SPEAKER_03 00:28 - 00:36

You're from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, late July, with your family, and you make this historic decision.

SPEAKER_03 00:36 - 00:37

Tell me the story.

SPEAKER_01 00:38 - 00:43

Look, the polls we had showed that it was a neck-and-neck race.

SPEAKER_01 00:44 - 00:45

It would have been down to the wire.

SPEAKER_01 00:46 - 00:55

But what happened was a number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was going to hurt them in the races.

SPEAKER_01 00:56 - 01:01

And I was concerned if I stayed in the race, that would be the topic.

SPEAKER_01 01:01 - 01:05

You'd be interviewing me about, why did Nancy Pelosi say, why did so on?

SPEAKER_01 01:07 - 01:09

And I thought it would be a real distraction, number one.

SPEAKER_01 01:10 - 01:15

Number two, when I ran the first time, I thought of myself as being a transition president.

SPEAKER_01 01:16 - 01:18

I can't even say how old I am.

SPEAKER_01 01:18 - 01:19

It's hard for me to get it out of my mouth.

SPEAKER_01 01:21 - 01:25

But things got moving so quickly, it didn't happen.

SPEAKER_01 01:26 - 01:34

And the combination was that I thought it was a critical issue for me still, it's not a joke, maintaining this democracy.

SPEAKER_01 01:34 - 01:49

But I thought it was important, because although it's a great honor being president, I think I have an obligation to the country to do what I, the most important thing you can do, and that is we must, we must, we must defeat Trump.

SPEAKER_03 01:49 - 01:57

I saw those images of your family in the Oval Office, sitting just over to your left, as you addressed the nation.

SPEAKER_03 01:57 - 01:59

They came up to you after the speech.

SPEAKER_03 01:59 - 02:00

What did you say to them?

SPEAKER_01 02:01 - 02:02

It's what they said to me.

SPEAKER_01 02:04 - 02:10

They said, my grandchildren call me Papa, my children call me Dad.

SPEAKER_01 02:11 - 02:15

And they said they were proud, and it mattered to me a lot.

SPEAKER_03 02:15 - 02:21

When I saw you with your family in the Oval, I wondered, is he thinking of Beau, too?

SPEAKER_01 02:27 - 02:32

Look, I can honestly say that I think of him all the time.

SPEAKER_01 02:32 - 02:35

Whenever I have a decision, it's really hard to make.

SPEAKER_01 02:35 - 02:36

I literally asked myself, what will Beau do?

SPEAKER_01 02:37 - 02:40

He was, he should be sitting here and be an interviewer, not me.

SPEAKER_01 02:41 - 02:44

He was really a fine man.

SPEAKER_01 02:45 - 02:50

You know, Beau, Beau was committed to my staying committed.

SPEAKER_01 02:50 - 03:00

We had a conversation toward the end when he was, everybody, we knew he wasn't going to live.

SPEAKER_01 03:00 - 03:03

And he said, Dad, I know, we know what's going to happen.

SPEAKER_01 03:03 - 03:04

He said, I'm going to be okay, Dad.

SPEAKER_01 03:05 - 03:06

I'm all right, I'm not afraid.

SPEAKER_01 03:06 - 03:08

But, Dad, you've got to make me promise.

SPEAKER_01 03:09 - 03:10

I said, what's that, Beau?

SPEAKER_01 03:10 - 03:13

He said, I know when it happens, you're going to want to quit.

SPEAKER_01 03:14 - 03:15

You're not going to stay engaged.

SPEAKER_01 03:15 - 03:18

He went with my dad, he said, look at me.

SPEAKER_01 03:18 - 03:19

Look at me, Dad.

SPEAKER_01 03:20 - 03:22

Give me your word as a Biden.

SPEAKER_01 03:23 - 03:25

When I go, you'll stay engaged.

SPEAKER_01 03:25 - 03:26

Give me your word.

SPEAKER_01 03:27 - 03:28

Give me your word.

SPEAKER_01 03:30 - 03:32

And I did.

SPEAKER_01 03:32 - 03:38

And then, that's why I had not planned on running after he died.

SPEAKER_01 03:38 - 03:40

And then Charlottesville happened.

SPEAKER_02 03:41 - 03:58

In 2017, white supremacist demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned deadly when, on August 12th, Heather Heyer, a civil rights activist, was murdered in what the Justice Department called a hate-inspired act of domestic terrorism.

SPEAKER_02 03:59 - 04:04

Biden has long traced his decision to run in 2020 to that moment.

SPEAKER_02 04:04 - 04:08

It really is the beginning of your journey to the presidency.

SPEAKER_03 04:09 - 04:15

As you look at American democracy seven years later, how do you see it?

SPEAKER_01 04:19 - 04:42

When I spoke to the mom who lost her daughter, it's a consequence of those neo-Nazis and white supremacists coming out of the fields in America with torches, carrying Nazi banners, singing the same sick anti-Semitic bile that was sung in Germany in the 30s.

SPEAKER_01 04:42 - 04:48

And when her daughter was killed, the press went to the then-President Trump and said, what do you think?

SPEAKER_01 04:48 - 04:50

He said, they're very fine people on both sides.

SPEAKER_01 04:51 - 04:52

I knew then.

SPEAKER_01 04:53 - 04:54

I knew I had to do something.

SPEAKER_01 04:55 - 04:56

And that's how I decided to run.

SPEAKER_01 04:57 - 04:59

Because democracy was literally at stake.

SPEAKER_01 04:59 - 05:06

And, you know, and then he made, he evidenced everything that we thought.

SPEAKER_01 05:07 - 05:18

You know, January 6th, when attack on the Capitol, talked about, now, because he now talks about making sure they're all, you know, let out of prison.

SPEAKER_01 05:18 - 05:19

They're going to pardon them.

SPEAKER_01 05:20 - 05:20

Think of this.

SPEAKER_01 05:21 - 05:26

Every other time the Ku Klux Klan has been involved, they've wore hoods so they're not identified.

SPEAKER_01 05:27 - 05:33

Under his presidency, they came out of those woods with no hoods, knowing they had an ally.

SPEAKER_01 05:34 - 05:35

That's how I read it.

SPEAKER_01 05:35 - 05:37

They knew they had an ally in the White House.

SPEAKER_01 05:37 - 05:39

And he stepped up for them.

SPEAKER_03 05:40 - 05:47

Are you confident that there will be a peaceful transfer of power in January 2025?

SPEAKER_01 05:48 - 05:50

If Trump wins, no, I'm not confident at all.

SPEAKER_01 05:51 - 05:53

I mean, if Trump loses, I'm not confident at all.

SPEAKER_01 05:54 - 05:55

He means what he says.

SPEAKER_01 05:55 - 05:56

We don't take him seriously.

SPEAKER_01 05:56 - 05:58

He means it.

SPEAKER_01 05:58 - 06:01

All the stuff about if we lose, there'll be a bloodbath.

SPEAKER_01 06:02 - 06:03

It's going to have to be a stolen election.

SPEAKER_01 06:03 - 06:07

Look what they're trying to do now in the local election districts where people count the votes.

SPEAKER_01 06:08 - 06:08

They're elected.

SPEAKER_01 06:09 - 06:13

They're putting people in place in states that they're going to count the votes, right?

SPEAKER_01 06:13 - 06:15

You can't love your country only when you win.

SPEAKER_02 06:16 - 06:27

Trump has said his remarks on Charlottesville were not intended to praise white nationalists and that he was warning of economic carnage when he said bloodbath.

SPEAKER_02 06:27 - 06:31

But Trump isn't the only thing on Biden's mind.

SPEAKER_02 06:31 - 06:34

You have about five months left in your presidency.

SPEAKER_03 06:34 - 06:40

You're managing two wars, domestic policy, the economy.

SPEAKER_03 06:41 - 06:45

On foreign policy, Israel's war with Hamas.

SPEAKER_03 06:45 - 06:49

Is a ceasefire possible before the end of your term?

SPEAKER_01 06:49 - 06:49

It's still possible.

SPEAKER_01 06:50 - 06:59

The plan I put together, endorsed by the G7, endorsed by the UN Security Council, etc., is still viable.

SPEAKER_01 07:00 - 07:11

And I'm working literally every single day to, and my whole team, to see to it that it doesn't escalate into a regional war, but it easily can.

SPEAKER_03 07:12 - 07:13

You've had a lot of ambition.

SPEAKER_03 07:13 - 07:20

Some senators told me in March of 2021, you took them into the Oval Office and pointed up at FDR's portrait and said, we're going big.

SPEAKER_03 07:21 - 07:22

We're going in that direction.

SPEAKER_01 07:22 - 07:23

I did.

SPEAKER_01 07:23 - 07:26

And we have, with the great help of so many people.

SPEAKER_01 07:28 - 07:34

Look, democracy works, and it was very important to prove that it worked, prove that it worked.

SPEAKER_01 07:34 - 07:36

I mean, look at what we've been able to do.

SPEAKER_01 07:36 - 07:41

We've created 16 million jobs, I mean, real new jobs.

SPEAKER_01 07:41 - 07:49

We've gotten around the brink of having the private sector invest over a trillion dollars, a trillion dollars in the American economy.

SPEAKER_01 07:50 - 07:58

One of the things I fought for as a senator for a long time was to change the dynamic of how we grow the economy, not from the top down, but from the bottom up.

SPEAKER_01 07:59 - 08:02

The idea of trickle-down economics doesn't work, in my view.

SPEAKER_03 08:02 - 08:03

You're proud of this record.

SPEAKER_03 08:03 - 08:06

Will we see you out on the campaign trail for Vice President Harris?

SPEAKER_01 08:07 - 08:07

Yes, yes, you will.

SPEAKER_01 08:07 - 08:09

I talk to her frequently.

SPEAKER_01 08:09 - 08:13

And by the way, I've known her running mate as a great guy, as we say.

SPEAKER_01 08:13 - 08:16

If we grew up in the same neighborhood, we'd have been friends.

SPEAKER_01 08:16 - 08:17

He's my kind of guy.

SPEAKER_01 08:18 - 08:18

He's real.

SPEAKER_01 08:19 - 08:19

He's smart.

SPEAKER_01 08:20 - 08:21

I've known him for several decades.

SPEAKER_01 08:22 - 08:23

I think it's a hell of a team.

SPEAKER_03 08:23 - 08:33

To those who have expressed skepticism about how much you'll be on the trail or about the rest of your term, raise questions about your health, what do you say to them?

SPEAKER_01 08:34 - 08:35

All I can say is watch.

SPEAKER_01 08:35 - 08:36

That's all.

SPEAKER_01 08:36 - 08:40

Look, I had a really, really bad day in that debate because I was sick.

SPEAKER_01 08:42 - 08:45

But I have no serious problem.

SPEAKER_01 08:45 - 08:49

I was talking to Governor Shapiro, who's a friend.

SPEAKER_01 08:49 - 08:52

We have to win Pennsylvania, my original home state.

SPEAKER_01 08:52 - 08:55

He and I are putting together a campaign tour in Pennsylvania.

SPEAKER_01 08:55 - 08:57

I'm going to be campaigning in other states as well.

SPEAKER_01 08:58 - 09:01

And I'm going to do whatever Kamala thinks I can do to help most.

SPEAKER_02 09:02 - 09:11

We had this conversation in the president's private residence, here in the White House Treaty Room, where historic peace agreements have been signed.

SPEAKER_02 09:12 - 09:20

Watching over us, Ulysses S. Grant, the general-turned-president who labored to restore the union after the Civil War.

SPEAKER_03 09:20 - 09:26

When you think about the presidency, we're here in a special room in the residence, so much history in this room.

SPEAKER_03 09:27 - 09:32

How do you want history to remember President Biden?

SPEAKER_01 09:34 - 09:35

That he proved democracy can work.

SPEAKER_01 09:37 - 09:38

It got us out of a pandemic.

SPEAKER_01 09:39 - 09:43

It produced the single greatest economic recovery in American history.

SPEAKER_01 09:44 - 09:46

We're the most powerful economy in the world.

SPEAKER_01 09:46 - 09:48

We have more to do.

SPEAKER_01 09:48 - 09:52

And it demonstrated that we can pull the nation together.

SPEAKER_01 09:52 - 09:57

Look, I've always believed, and I still do, the American people are good and decent, honorable people.

SPEAKER_01 09:58 - 10:04

When I announced my candidacy to run way back for president, I said, we've got to do three things.

SPEAKER_01 10:04 - 10:05

Restore the soul of America.

SPEAKER_01 10:07 - 10:10

Build the economy from the middle out in the bottom up, not the top down.

SPEAKER_01 10:10 - 10:12

And bring the country together.

SPEAKER_01 10:12 - 10:14

No one thought we could get done.

SPEAKER_01 10:14 - 10:17

And the collusion was not my own people, but we got done.

SPEAKER_01 10:17 - 10:23

But one of the problems is, I knew all the things we did were going to take a little time to work their way through.

SPEAKER_01 10:23 - 10:32

So now people are realizing, oh, that highway, oh, that big mistake we made, we didn't put up signs saying Joe did it.

SPEAKER_01 10:34 - 10:37

Folks, the people of this nation have spoken.

SPEAKER_02 10:37 - 10:41

Four years ago, what Joe did was defeat Donald Trump.

SPEAKER_02 10:41 - 10:52

Now, with Trump attempting to return to the White House, Biden is sounding the alarm, in a way sitting presidents rarely, if ever, do.

SPEAKER_02 10:52 - 10:54

The stakes are that high to you?

SPEAKER_01 10:54 - 10:57

I give you my word, I think, that I mark my words.

SPEAKER_01 10:58 - 11:03

If he wins this nomination, I mean, excuse me, this election, watch what happens.

SPEAKER_01 11:04 - 11:05

It's a danger.

SPEAKER_01 11:05 - 11:08

He's a genuine danger to American security.

SPEAKER_01 11:08 - 11:10

Look, we're at an inflection point in world history.

SPEAKER_01 11:10 - 11:12

We really are.

SPEAKER_01 11:12 - 11:19

The decisions we make in the last three, four years, the next three, four years, are going to determine what the next six decades look like.

SPEAKER_01 11:19 - 11:21

And democracy is the key.

SPEAKER_01 11:21 - 11:26

And that's why I went down and made that speech at Johnson Center about the Supreme Court.

SPEAKER_01 11:27 - 11:31

The Supreme Court is so out of whack, so out of whack.

SPEAKER_01 11:31 - 11:35

And so I propose that we limit terms to 18 years.

SPEAKER_01 11:35 - 11:40

So, anyway, there's little regard by the MAGA Republicans.

SPEAKER_01 11:41 - 11:43

For their political institutions.

SPEAKER_01 11:44 - 11:46

That's what holds this country together.

SPEAKER_01 11:47 - 11:48

That's what democracy is about.

SPEAKER_01 11:49 - 11:50

That's who we are as a nation.

SPEAKER_03 11:51 - 11:53

Mr. President, thank you.

SPEAKER_01 11:53 - 11:54

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01 11:54 - 11:55

I appreciate it.

SPEAKER_01 11:55 - 11:56

It's an honor to be with you.

SPEAKER_03 11:56 - 11:58

It's an honor to be in this room with you.

SPEAKER_03 11:58 - 11:58

Thank you.

SPEAKER_03 11:58 - 11:59

Thank you.

UNKNOWN 12:00 - 12:00

Thank you.
