Action Items

Here are the actionable tasks, commitments, and decisions requiring follow-up mentioned in the interview:

Community Organizing and Political Engagement

• SPEAKER_01: Focus on the concept of “ordinary people get together and reimagine what their lives could be and push on the system.” This is presented as a fundamental way change happens in a democracy.
• SPEAKER_01: Acknowledge the need for people “inside that system that can translate those impulses into laws and institutional practices.” This highlights the dual role of activism and governance.
• SPEAKER_01: Emphasize the importance of “responses and pushback from civil society, from various institutions and individuals outside of government.”
• SPEAKER_01: Stress the necessity of “people in government, in both parties, who say, well, no, you can’t do that.” This points to the need for principled individuals within the political system.

Information and Media Environment

• SPEAKER_01: Encourage “experimenting with new forms of journalism and how do we use social media in ways that reaffirm facts, separate facts from opinion.”
• SPEAKER_01: Advocate for training and teaching children “to distinguish between [facts and opinions].”
• SPEAKER_01: Suggest that some “government regulatory constraints around some of these business models” might be necessary, while remaining consistent with the First Amendment, to address business models that “elevate the most hateful voices or the most polarizing voices.”

Rebuilding National Identity and Social Cohesion

• SPEAKER_01: Reinforce the “great American story” as a starting point for common identity, one that includes “everybody” and emphasizes core dignity, rights, respect, and individual and collective responsibility.
• SPEAKER_01: Push back against the “bad story of America” which promotes hierarchy, caste, and exclusion.
• SPEAKER_01: Urge individuals and institutions (universities, law firms, businesses, places of worship) to identify their core beliefs and missions and “push back” against pressures that compromise them, even when it is uncomfortable.
• SPEAKER_01: Advise young leaders to be “impatient with injustice and cruelty” but to practice “a game of addition, not subtraction,” finding common ground with those who don’t agree on everything.
• SPEAKER_01: Promote initiatives like “Meetup” (or similar real-world interactions) that encourage people to “actually meet people in the real world” and build trust through shared endeavors.

Obama Foundation and Future Leaders

• SPEAKER_01: Continue to train the “next generation of leaders” through the Obama Foundation, providing them with resources and convening them so they know they are not alone.
• SPEAKER_01: Support programs like “My Brother’s Keeper” and “Girls Opportunity Alliance” that target specific demographics historically left out.
• SPEAKER_01: Encourage young people to attach themselves to the “better story” of America in their individual lives, communities, businesses, and institutions.
• SPEAKER_01: Inspire young leaders to recognize that while progress is not linear, “the good will win out” if they are committed to fighting for that better story.
