SPEAKER_02 00:00 - 00:03

Welcome to another special episode of Rio Meats.

SPEAKER_02 00:03 - 00:13

I'm Rio Ferdinand and this is the only place that you'll hear the biggest names, and I said the biggest, and I mean that, speaking about their lives, their careers, in a way that you've never, ever heard them speak before.

SPEAKER_02 00:13 - 00:16

So guys, we went big with the first one, Cristiano Ronaldo.

SPEAKER_02 00:16 - 00:18

So I had to follow it up with someone who's going to sit around him.

SPEAKER_02 00:19 - 00:24

And I had to go for another Man United, number seven, the icon, Mr. David Beckham.

SPEAKER_02 00:24 - 00:29

After you enjoyed this one, make sure you go and find the chat that I had before with Cristiano Ronaldo.

SPEAKER_02 00:29 - 00:38

But today I'm really looking forward to catching up with one of my old teammates, a guy I've shared many a changing rooms with, a guy that was meticulous.

SPEAKER_02 00:38 - 00:44

He was an unreal professional, worked harder than most, but the right foot, man.

SPEAKER_02 00:45 - 00:45

I need to find out.

SPEAKER_02 00:46 - 00:48

Who is David Beckham today in the game?

SPEAKER_02 00:48 - 00:51

Who does he see when he watches the game and goes, you know what, that might be a bit of me.

SPEAKER_02 00:52 - 00:54

The pressure is having your own boot.

SPEAKER_02 00:54 - 00:56

Imagine getting your own boot named after you almost.

SPEAKER_02 00:56 - 00:58

He owned the Predator for years.

SPEAKER_02 00:58 - 00:58

It was him.

SPEAKER_02 00:59 - 01:00

That's pressure, mate.

SPEAKER_02 01:00 - 01:01

I don't want to own in a football club.

SPEAKER_02 01:01 - 01:03

When did he even think about that?

SPEAKER_02 01:03 - 01:03

So there you sit.

SPEAKER_02 01:03 - 01:04

There's loads to get into him.

SPEAKER_02 01:05 - 01:06

Let's start the episode right now.

SPEAKER_02 01:07 - 01:13

I got here on a line bike.

SPEAKER_02 01:14 - 01:14

Really?

SPEAKER_02 01:14 - 01:15

I got on a bike and just rode it.

SPEAKER_01 01:15 - 01:16

Seriously.

SPEAKER_01 01:16 - 01:16

With a hat?

SPEAKER_02 01:16 - 01:17

No, straight through.

SPEAKER_02 01:18 - 01:18

No one bother you?

SPEAKER_02 01:19 - 01:19

No, I don't stop.

SPEAKER_02 01:20 - 01:22

It's like the cab drivers, there's everyone that lets you in.

SPEAKER_02 01:22 - 01:23

It's brilliant.

SPEAKER_02 01:24 - 01:24

It is good.

SPEAKER_01 01:24 - 01:34

Cruz the other day, he had five mates around his house, and I wake up in the morning and there's like five line bikes all out lying on the floor outside the house.

SPEAKER_01 01:34 - 01:36

I'm like, I'm sure that's not where you're meant to be.

SPEAKER_01 01:36 - 01:36

Bit of respect.

SPEAKER_01 01:36 - 01:37

Bit of respect, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02 01:38 - 01:46

So we were just talking here as you come in, Dave, and you're obviously a very busy guy.

SPEAKER_02 01:46 - 01:48

Do you get to watch much football anymore?

SPEAKER_02 01:48 - 01:51

Because I think a lot of people think, does he watch games other than into Miami?

SPEAKER_01 01:51 - 01:52

No, I actually do.

SPEAKER_01 01:53 - 02:00

I actually do, because obviously I've got a lot of boys in the house that also are supporters of either United or Romeo's, obviously Arsenal.

SPEAKER_01 02:02 - 02:03

How have you allowed that to happen, man?

SPEAKER_01 02:04 - 02:05

My kids are all main- It's a long story.

SPEAKER_01 02:06 - 02:06

It's a long story.

SPEAKER_01 02:07 - 02:12

He was really young and we were in London one Friday and he was like, Dad, let's go to a game this weekend.

SPEAKER_01 02:13 - 02:17

So I started to look at the fixtures and I was like, Arsenal are at home.

SPEAKER_01 02:18 - 02:19

So I thought, do you know what?

SPEAKER_01 02:19 - 02:23

They're always really nice to me when I go down to watch United and Arsenal.

SPEAKER_01 02:24 - 02:27

And I thought, okay, they'll look after us.

SPEAKER_01 02:27 - 02:29

There won't be any hassle getting in.

SPEAKER_01 02:29 - 02:30

No hassle sat there.

SPEAKER_01 02:30 - 02:35

So we walked in, amazing seats, sat in the director's box.

SPEAKER_01 02:35 - 02:38

Lunch was unbelievable before the game.

SPEAKER_01 02:38 - 02:42

It was like Wagyu, full on, everything.

SPEAKER_01 02:42 - 02:53

So we walk in, I'm sat there and then Arsene walks in the room and he comes straight up to the table, introduces himself to Romeo and he says, come with me, son.

SPEAKER_01 02:53 - 03:05

So he takes him down to the changing room, meets all the players, gives him a shirt signed, takes him onto the pitch, walks in back up to the table and then gives him an Arsenal cashmere scarf.

SPEAKER_01 03:06 - 03:07

And that was it.

SPEAKER_01 03:07 - 03:07

It was done.

SPEAKER_01 03:08 - 03:11

I mean, I've tried to change his mind since, but impossible.

SPEAKER_01 03:11 - 03:14

So, so yeah, I do watch, I watch a lot of games.

SPEAKER_01 03:14 - 03:16

I'm always watching United, obviously.

SPEAKER_01 03:17 - 03:21

Whenever, whenever there's Premier League games on, I always watch them.

SPEAKER_01 03:21 - 03:22

The missus,

SPEAKER_02 03:22 - 03:23

is your missus like mine?

SPEAKER_02 03:23 - 03:24

Does she get the amps on time?

SPEAKER_01 03:26 - 03:28

Victoria just doesn't like the sound of football.

SPEAKER_01 03:29 - 03:30

Oh my God, my missus is exactly the same.

SPEAKER_01 03:30 - 03:31

She doesn't like the sound.

SPEAKER_01 03:32 - 03:32

Mute it.

SPEAKER_01 03:32 - 03:36

I think it takes her back years, years ago, but I, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 03:36 - 03:39

She, I mean, she knows, she knows that I love watching the games.

SPEAKER_01 03:39 - 03:42

I still watch match of the day every, every Saturday night.

SPEAKER_01 03:42 - 03:44

So, yeah.

SPEAKER_02 03:44 - 03:47

She probably don't want to hear Roy and Gary's voices, does she?

SPEAKER_02 03:47 - 03:48

That she's heard them for long enough.

SPEAKER_02 03:48 - 03:49

Well,

SPEAKER_01 03:49 - 03:51

yeah, I think that's part of the problem.

SPEAKER_02 03:51 - 03:52

So, when you're watching these games.

SPEAKER_00 03:52 - 03:53

She loves Keeney.

SPEAKER_00 03:53 - 03:55

She loves Gaz as well.

SPEAKER_00 03:55 - 03:55

She loves Gaz.

SPEAKER_00 03:56 - 03:56

Yeah?

SPEAKER_00 03:56 - 03:57

She loves that.

SPEAKER_00 03:57 - 03:57

Love hate.

SPEAKER_00 03:57 - 03:57

Love hate.

SPEAKER_00 03:57 - 03:58

Yeah, she loves them.

SPEAKER_00 03:58 - 03:59

She loves them.

SPEAKER_02 03:59 - 04:11

But talking about watching the games, number seven is obviously synonymous with your name and the likes of, you look at yourself, you look at Cantona, Figo, Raul, people like that.

SPEAKER_02 04:12 - 04:13

What about the ones today?

SPEAKER_02 04:13 - 04:16

Is a number seven shirt doing it like it was back in the day?

SPEAKER_01 04:16 - 04:17

The Sackers.

SPEAKER_01 04:18 - 04:20

I mean, you look at Bakaya.

SPEAKER_01 04:20 - 04:22

I love, I love him as a player.

SPEAKER_01 04:22 - 04:25

You know, I love him as a person, firstly, but I love him as a player.

SPEAKER_01 04:25 - 04:33

And everything that he represents as a footballer, not just on the field, but off the field as well, you know, he's trying to make a difference in many different areas.

SPEAKER_01 04:34 - 04:37

But you know that he's focused on his play as well.

SPEAKER_01 04:37 - 04:39

And that's, that's what I love about him.

SPEAKER_01 04:40 - 04:45

So I think he's, you know, he's a great number seven, but obviously I've been so lucky over my career.

SPEAKER_01 04:46 - 04:50

You know, obviously when I was at United, I wore number seven for a long time.

SPEAKER_01 04:50 - 05:00

And I was lucky that I followed in the footsteps of people that I had looked up to, my heroes, you know, someone like, you know, George Best, you know, someone like that.

SPEAKER_01 05:00 - 05:05

And then you look at, you know, Eric and Brian Robson, Brian Robson was a hero of mine.

SPEAKER_01 05:05 - 05:09

So, you know, to follow in their footsteps was always a dream of mine.

SPEAKER_01 05:09 - 05:19

And then obviously to wear it for England, you know, I never obviously got to wear it when I moved to Real Madrid, but I never wanted it at Real Madrid purely because it's Raul.

SPEAKER_01 05:19 - 05:22

You know, no one takes that number seven off of Raul.

SPEAKER_01 05:22 - 05:24

And I wasn't even going to attempt that.

SPEAKER_01 05:25 - 05:28

But the number seven shirt has always, has always been special to me.

SPEAKER_01 05:28 - 05:31

Talking of number sevens and Real Madrid and Man United, Ronaldo.

SPEAKER_01 05:31 - 05:40

You know, he's had a, he's had an unbelievable career, you know, every team that he's played for, you know, he's, you know, created a legacy for himself.

SPEAKER_01 05:41 - 05:45

So, you know, I think he's, he's been incredible and he's played for the amount of time that he's played for.

SPEAKER_01 05:46 - 05:57

So he's had an unbelievable career, you know, firstly, obviously with, with United and then obviously going to Real Madrid and, and obviously, you know, his, his, his career with Portugal as well.

SPEAKER_01 05:57 - 06:00

So, you know, it's, it's an incredible career to look back on for him.

SPEAKER_02 06:01 - 06:06

It's crazy because we used to hammer him about the seven shirt because obviously he took it and he obviously knew the history of you before.

SPEAKER_02 06:06 - 06:09

And we used to go like the real number sevens, Bex, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02 06:09 - 06:12

Come on, when he was having a bad time and he used to flip, flip out.

SPEAKER_02 06:12 - 06:15

So you kind of inspired him without even knowing at times.

SPEAKER_02 06:16 - 06:19

And if we fast forward to today, you watch all the games and watch loads of players.

SPEAKER_02 06:20 - 06:22

Where would you play in today's game?

SPEAKER_02 06:22 - 06:22

Do you think?

SPEAKER_02 06:22 - 06:24

Because I have this discussion with my mates all the time.

SPEAKER_02 06:24 - 06:25

Formations have changed a little bit.

SPEAKER_02 06:25 - 06:28

Where would you see yourself in today's game?

SPEAKER_01 06:29 - 06:33

I've always seen myself on the right or in the middle.

SPEAKER_01 06:33 - 06:36

You know, I've always loved the 4-4-2, simple as that.

SPEAKER_01 06:37 - 06:43

Because that's the way we always played and it's the way that really, you know, we had so much success.

SPEAKER_01 06:43 - 07:04

I know the game's changed and, you know, I think that managers like Pep, I think, you know, he's created these systems and these players where, you know, you don't have a traditional right winger, but then all of a sudden he creates a system where actually it goes back to the old school time.

SPEAKER_01 07:04 - 07:07

But, you know, I always see myself as a winger.

SPEAKER_01 07:07 - 07:11

You know, I can never see myself as any other position, to be honest.

SPEAKER_02 07:11 - 07:14

And I always say, I play here and this is a player here.

SPEAKER_02 07:14 - 07:17

But is there a player in today's game that you go, that probably would be how I would be?

SPEAKER_02 07:18 - 07:19

A lot of similarities.

SPEAKER_01 07:22 - 07:22

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 07:23 - 07:32

I suppose the game has changed so much, you know, you know, I'm one of these ex-players that actually sits there and like, just get it out to the wing and put it in.

SPEAKER_01 07:33 - 07:38

You know, that's really what I sometimes I'm shouting at the TV for.

SPEAKER_01 07:38 - 07:48

Because sometimes you watch games and it's screaming for that kind of thing where you just want, you know, the boss used to turn around to me and say, sit on that line, sit on that line.

SPEAKER_01 07:48 - 07:51

And eventually the ball will come and take one touch.

SPEAKER_01 07:51 - 07:59

You know, I'm not one of these players and I was never one of these players to run at players and take them on like, like Bakaya and like there's other players out there.

SPEAKER_01 07:59 - 08:11

I suppose if there was one player where I look at and I think, you know, he's very similar in the way he delivers the ball, he's very similar in the way he crosses the ball or passes, it has to be Trent.

SPEAKER_02 08:12 - 08:14

I had Kevin De Bruyne, man.

SPEAKER_02 08:15 - 08:17

Well, it is good though.

SPEAKER_02 08:17 - 08:22

I see it with Trent, but I always think you'd play like the Kevin De Bruyne roster.

SPEAKER_02 08:22 - 08:23

I'd love to play like Kevin.

SPEAKER_01 08:24 - 08:25

I'd love to play.

SPEAKER_01 08:25 - 08:31

No, in all honesty, I think he's an unbelievable, you know, his vision is unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01 08:33 - 08:35

And he's an exceptional player.

SPEAKER_01 08:35 - 08:48

But when I look at a player and I think, I see myself in the way he puts the ball in, in what he sees, in the long balls that he plays, you know, he plays balls that some players don't even think about.

SPEAKER_01 08:48 - 08:50

And that's what I love about him as a player.

SPEAKER_02 08:51 - 08:54

It's much more fashionable to be a fullback now as well.

SPEAKER_02 08:54 - 08:56

And you look at it, it weren't the thing to do.

SPEAKER_02 08:56 - 08:58

Like there weren't many people wanting to be Gary Neville.

SPEAKER_01 08:58 - 08:59

There weren't many Gary Neville's.

SPEAKER_01 08:59 - 09:01

There weren't many Gary Neville's out there.

SPEAKER_02 09:01 - 09:03

I always call you, he said he was mustard in your film.

SPEAKER_01 09:03 - 09:04

He did, he did.

SPEAKER_02 09:04 - 09:06

But I thought he was more of a backup dancer for you.

SPEAKER_01 09:06 - 09:10

Well, you know, Gaz created the space for me.

SPEAKER_01 09:11 - 09:11

You know,

SPEAKER_00 09:11 - 09:14

that was unselfish runs.

SPEAKER_00 09:14 - 09:20

And he made a career out of it because we played together for so many years that he, he made those runs over and over again.

SPEAKER_01 09:20 - 09:25

And every now and again, one out of 10, I'd give him a ball, but it was very rare.

SPEAKER_02 09:25 - 09:28

How important is it to have a partnership like that on the pitch?

SPEAKER_02 09:28 - 09:32

Because I look at partnerships, everyone thinks like, I don't know, Colin, York or,

SPEAKER_02 09:33 - 09:34

Bergkamp and Thierry, et cetera.

SPEAKER_02 09:35 - 09:40

But I put your one with, with Gary up there as one of the most like important for a team.

SPEAKER_01 09:40 - 09:41

It was important for us.

SPEAKER_01 09:41 - 09:57

And I think I'd like to think it was important for United and important for England as well, you know, because we had such a great understanding, you know, that he knew that if I hadn't run back, which was very rare, I knew that he would be there covering me and vice versa.

SPEAKER_01 09:57 - 10:07

You know, I think that that was why Gary, you know, understood that even though 99% of the time when he made those runs, he was never going to get the ball.

SPEAKER_01 10:07 - 10:10

He knew that it was helping the team and helping me.

SPEAKER_01 10:11 - 10:12

So, you know, it worked both ways.

SPEAKER_01 10:12 - 10:13

Did you,

SPEAKER_02 10:13 - 10:13

did you do it?

SPEAKER_02 10:13 - 10:14

What was it you done for him?

SPEAKER_02 10:14 - 10:18

Cause he always talks about what he'd done for you and he's quite like, he puts himself down a little bit.

SPEAKER_01 10:19 - 10:23

Um, well, I think I made him famous with making him my best man.

SPEAKER_01 10:24 - 10:26

Apart from that, no, I'm only joking.

SPEAKER_01 10:27 - 10:31

Um, no, I think that we were just a great partnership.

SPEAKER_01 10:31 - 10:41

I think that obviously me being an East End boy moving to Manchester, you know, I needed solid friends, you know, I needed solid friends and solid teammates.

SPEAKER_01 10:41 - 10:50

And he was that person, you know, he was so, he really set the bar of professionalism, you know, and hard work.

SPEAKER_01 10:50 - 10:55

And I was lucky that I was like that.

SPEAKER_01 10:55 - 10:58

You know, I wanted to have that hard work.

SPEAKER_01 10:58 - 11:04

I wanted to have that professionalism, but I suppose it's easy to stray away from that.

SPEAKER_01 11:04 - 11:13

Um, whereas with Gary, because he was one of my closest friends, because I, I knew what I had to do to be a professional at United and stay at United.

SPEAKER_01 11:13 - 11:15

I knew I had to follow someone like that.

SPEAKER_02 11:16 - 11:17

He must've pissed you off sometimes.

SPEAKER_01 11:18 - 11:19

Um...

SPEAKER_01 11:19 - 11:20

Because he does talk so much, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_00 11:20 - 11:22

Yeah, but he's always talked so much.

SPEAKER_00 11:22 - 11:24

He's always talked so much.

SPEAKER_00 11:24 - 11:27

And now he's doing it every day on TV and everyone's seeing it.

SPEAKER_00 11:27 - 11:27

doesn't he?

SPEAKER_01 11:28 - 11:29

But, do you know what?

SPEAKER_01 11:29 - 11:32

He's, he's been unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01 11:32 - 11:34

For, for, you know, he always talks about it.

SPEAKER_01 11:34 - 11:43

For a player that, you know, was a United fan through and through, annoyed most other teams that, you know, every time they played against him.

SPEAKER_01 11:44 - 11:52

Um, but the fact that he is now loved by the whole country and, and for what he does is, he's brilliant.

SPEAKER_02 11:52 - 11:59

I think it was, I used to love it and I don't know if you did, but you wouldn't have at the time, but I used to love it when I used to see his argue sometimes on the pitch.

SPEAKER_02 11:59 - 11:59

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 12:01 - 12:05

Because it was almost like you need to, in a great teams, you need people.

SPEAKER_01 12:06 - 12:06

You need that.

SPEAKER_01 12:06 - 12:12

You need to, that's what you, you need someone in your team that's going to pull you and not just say, Oh, Oh, by the way, you miss your runner.

SPEAKER_01 12:13 - 12:15

Maybe next time watch him.

SPEAKER_01 12:16 - 12:17

You need people like that.

SPEAKER_01 12:17 - 12:18

You were like that.

SPEAKER_01 12:18 - 12:19

Keeney was like that.

SPEAKER_01 12:20 - 12:23

Gaz was like that, you know, but we, it wasn't just him.

SPEAKER_01 12:23 - 12:30

We had so many people and players in our, in our team that if you messed up, you, you're going to, you're going to get it.

SPEAKER_01 12:30 - 12:30

You're going to get told.

SPEAKER_01 12:31 - 12:34

And if you don't get told by the players, you get told by the manager.

SPEAKER_01 12:34 - 12:49

And, and that's really why we had such a good relationship on and off the field, because we could be honest with each other, you know, and Gaz was always there for me, you know, through, through difficult times and, and vice versa.

SPEAKER_02 12:49 - 12:50

It's crazy.

SPEAKER_02 12:50 - 12:54

Cause I was doing my other podcast with Owen Hargreaves the other day, Rio presents on the channel.

SPEAKER_02 12:54 - 12:59

And he spoke about coming to Maine United and realizing there's 25 shots.

SPEAKER_02 13:00 - 13:02

There's a lot of sharks in the dressing room and they're all feeding.

SPEAKER_02 13:02 - 13:08

They're all want to be, but again, I said to that, yes, there are, but you do need that overarching figure.

SPEAKER_03 13:08 - 13:08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 13:09 - 13:11

To make sure that they cultivate a good working environment.

SPEAKER_01 13:11 - 13:13

I think, I think we were lucky though.

SPEAKER_01 13:13 - 13:30

I think when, because, you know, I suppose saying sharks is, is, I wouldn't say it's the wrong word, but I will just say that, you know, we came into a United team and a United and a club that were hungry for success.

SPEAKER_01 13:30 - 13:35

You know, you didn't have players out doing other players just to get in the team.

SPEAKER_01 13:35 - 13:43

You know, you'd have players, we had a team, we had a real team of players that were supporting each other that were, that we were a team.

SPEAKER_01 13:44 - 13:44

Simple as that.

SPEAKER_01 13:44 - 13:44

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 13:45 - 13:47

And that's what I realized when I first walked in.

SPEAKER_02 13:47 - 13:55

And obviously I knew you and the England boys, Gaz and Scalzi and that and Buddy before, but that's what I, when I walked in, the first thing I thought is like the togetherness here.

SPEAKER_02 13:56 - 13:57

Where does that come from?

SPEAKER_02 13:57 - 13:58

How does that, you were there before me.

SPEAKER_01 13:59 - 13:59

It comes from the top.

SPEAKER_01 13:59 - 14:00

It comes from the manager.

SPEAKER_01 14:01 - 14:02

It comes from the manager.

SPEAKER_01 14:02 - 14:04

It comes from the, it comes from the captain.

SPEAKER_01 14:05 - 14:06

But we were lucky.

SPEAKER_01 14:06 - 14:12

Yeah, we had, you know, when I first moved to United, you know, you had players like Brian Robson as captain.

SPEAKER_01 14:13 - 14:23

You had Steve Bruce, you know, you had, you had, you had Incy, you had Keeney, you know, all of these strong characters, but actually there was a lot more captains in the team than you realized.

SPEAKER_01 14:23 - 14:26

And that's really, it all comes from the manager.

SPEAKER_02 14:27 - 14:36

You know, the manager, and I think he's such an important aspect of anything that happened to Maynard, but I look at all the players that were under him and they all always talk about the influence that he had.

SPEAKER_02 14:36 - 14:40

What were the influences that he, that rubbed off on you from the manager?

SPEAKER_01 14:40 - 14:42

I always looked at the boss as a father figure.

SPEAKER_01 14:43 - 14:47

You know, I was obviously, I moved up from, from East London when I was 15 years old.

SPEAKER_01 14:48 - 14:57

And he was, even though he was Manchester United's manager, it was like, it was like, it was like my dad.

SPEAKER_01 14:57 - 15:14

And the kind of relationship that we had was incredible because he knew when exactly to put his arm around you, but he also knew what player could, you know, take a little bit of a, a stronger word or, you know,

SPEAKER_00 15:14 - 15:14

or,

SPEAKER_01 15:14 - 15:21

or needed a little bit less, you know, and I think that that's why we had the success at Manchester United that we had.

SPEAKER_01 15:21 - 15:24

It's why the players wanted to play for him.

SPEAKER_01 15:25 - 15:32

And, and, and really, you know, out my, my relationship with, with the manager, people always talk about, you know, the difficult times.

SPEAKER_01 15:32 - 15:44

We, we didn't have many difficult times, you know, but I think that, you know, the manager understood me and I understood what the manager wanted, but we all, we all respected the manager so much.

SPEAKER_01 15:44 - 15:47

Um, but he was always there for us no matter what.

SPEAKER_02 15:47 - 15:54

It's funny because I remember the time when people asked me about you and about forget being a player, but it was more like, what was it?

SPEAKER_02 15:54 - 15:55

I said, you know what, you're stubborn.

SPEAKER_01 15:56 - 15:57

The manager or me?

SPEAKER_01 15:57 - 15:58

Both of you are.

SPEAKER_01 15:59 - 15:59

But you know,

SPEAKER_02 15:59 - 16:02

I remember the time when you, remember, remember you had, I think you had a bob of that on.

SPEAKER_02 16:03 - 16:03

And you,

SPEAKER_01 16:04 - 16:05

I don't know, I don't know what you're talking about.

SPEAKER_02 16:06 - 16:08

And I was saying, when I say it to my mate,

SPEAKER_01 16:08 - 16:09

it was a cap actually.

SPEAKER_02 16:09 - 16:10

I would have took it off.

SPEAKER_01 16:10 - 16:11

It was a cap.

SPEAKER_01 16:11 - 16:12

You said no.

SPEAKER_01 16:12 - 16:13

I don't know what had happened.

SPEAKER_01 16:14 - 16:19

Something must have happened at some point for me to have not taken it off.

SPEAKER_01 16:19 - 16:23

Um, an argument in training the day before or something.

SPEAKER_01 16:23 - 16:24

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 16:25 - 16:25

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 16:25 - 16:28

Because, because I can't believe I didn't take it off.

SPEAKER_01 16:29 - 16:31

Um, but the manager just kind of went, okay.

SPEAKER_01 16:32 - 16:32

But I was like,

SPEAKER_02 16:33 - 16:35

I was thinking that something's going to happen behind the scenes.

SPEAKER_01 16:35 - 16:37

I was like, there's no way I'm playing tomorrow.

SPEAKER_02 16:38 - 16:40

But you know, I look at the change room.

SPEAKER_02 16:40 - 16:42

I think it's always good to be in the change room.

SPEAKER_02 16:42 - 16:43

I have different characters, probably like business.

SPEAKER_02 16:44 - 16:46

There's different people, different characters in the change room.

SPEAKER_02 16:46 - 16:53

And I think when you look back at the squad that I came into, the later parts of your time at May United, because we had one year together, didn't we?

SPEAKER_02 16:53 - 17:01

And I was so surprised that like, you look at Roy now as the pundit, this like straight down the, down the barrel at you.

SPEAKER_02 17:01 - 17:03

But he was a funny guy, man.

SPEAKER_01 17:03 - 17:04

He was fun.

SPEAKER_01 17:04 - 17:08

But, but I think that comes across, you know, that comes across in what he's doing now.

SPEAKER_01 17:08 - 17:09

Keeney was always that person.

SPEAKER_02 17:10 - 17:11

Could you imagine him being a pundit at that time?

SPEAKER_02 17:11 - 17:12

There's no way.

SPEAKER_02 17:12 - 17:13

He used to mute the TV, remember?

SPEAKER_01 17:13 - 17:14

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 17:16 - 17:16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 17:16 - 17:19

No, I couldn't see him being a pundit back then.

SPEAKER_01 17:20 - 17:24

But I think, you know, I think he's unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01 17:24 - 17:24

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 17:24 - 17:25

I think he's unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01 17:26 - 17:30

I think players love him, fans love him, managers love him.

SPEAKER_01 17:30 - 17:31

You know, he's honest.

SPEAKER_01 17:32 - 17:33

And I think that that's what people want to hear.

SPEAKER_02 17:34 - 17:41

And just the last thing about what me and my mates talk about, because I think it's always good to do that, because me and my mates have loads of conversations about players, but you come up a lot.

SPEAKER_02 17:41 - 17:47

And I always say, and I've done a pete on this on the podcast before, is that I think sometimes,

SPEAKER_02 17:48 - 17:57

because you're such a big kind of character, big personality, you've got a huge kind of following and whatnot, sometimes your football gets come as secondary.

SPEAKER_02 17:58 - 18:00

And how do you, do you think that?

SPEAKER_02 18:00 - 18:02

And if you do, what does that make you feel sometimes?

SPEAKER_02 18:03 - 18:04

Because I know how passionate you are about your game.

SPEAKER_01 18:05 - 18:07

I can't lie, it does hurt a little bit,

SPEAKER_01 18:08 - 18:14

you know, because over the years, it's probably been talked about, more than often,

SPEAKER_01 18:16 - 18:19

you know, about obviously that side of things for me.

SPEAKER_01 18:19 - 18:50

But I suppose it was always going to be, you know, mentioned at some point, because obviously, you know, I had to obviously the career that I had had, but then I had something outside of my football as well, that, you know, it wasn't as important as the football, but now, it's what I do, you know, so I knew that at some point when I finished playing, I was going to move into the business side of things, and the things that I did, you know, during my career would help that side of my business, and it has, so I'm very lucky, but obviously,

SPEAKER_01 18:50 - 19:03

I'd rather people turn around and say that he was a great player, you know, or a great person, or, you know, won what I'd won, but I think people are still starting to talk more like that.

SPEAKER_01 19:03 - 19:12

I think, I think the documentary that I did, obviously, recently, I think, reminded people maybe of, of the, the player that I,

SPEAKER_00 19:12 - 19:13

that you were the shit,

SPEAKER_01 19:13 - 19:14

you were the guy.

SPEAKER_00 19:14 - 19:16

I, I wouldn't say that, but,

SPEAKER_01 19:17 - 19:24

you know, I suppose what I'd won, and, and, and how I won it, and the decisions that I made, I think that the documentary helped that.

SPEAKER_02 19:24 - 19:28

Talking about decisions that you made, obviously, you left Man United and went to Real Madrid,

SPEAKER_02 19:29 - 19:35

and I'm looking at players like Drew Burnham and Kylian Mbappe, now, who are going into there, and what they're walking into.

SPEAKER_02 19:37 - 19:40

How difficult is that challenge, going to a club like Real Madrid?

SPEAKER_01 19:41 - 19:49

Yeah, players like, you know, Jude, moving to Real Madrid at such a young age, doing what he's done in his first season,

SPEAKER_01 19:50 - 19:51

is exceptional.

SPEAKER_01 19:52 - 20:23

But, he's, he's very, I think the decisions that Jude has made over the years, you know, from, obviously, going from Birmingham to, you know, to obviously Dortmund, you know, for a player that is so young to make those decisions, to take those kind of challenges on, you know, says something about him as a, as a person, and also the people that he has around him, because to take on those challenges, at such a young age, has been great for his career,

SPEAKER_00 20:23 - 20:23

you know,

SPEAKER_01 20:23 - 20:40

to give him that experience of going abroad and playing, I think has been unbelievable decisions on, on his part, to now make that decision from going to Dortmund, to Real Madrid, at such a young age, and to perform the way he's performed.

SPEAKER_01 20:40 - 20:49

But, I don't think it's just his performances that has gained the love of Madrid and Real Madrid fans.

SPEAKER_01 20:49 - 20:54

I think what he's done, he's come in as a, as a humble person, which he is.

SPEAKER_01 20:54 - 20:55

He's a hard-working person.

SPEAKER_01 20:55 - 20:58

He wants to learn the language.

SPEAKER_01 20:58 - 21:11

But more importantly, you know, he's an exceptional player, but I think, the work rate that he does in a game, sometimes, you know, there's two different players at Real Madrid.

SPEAKER_01 21:11 - 21:16

You have your, your stars, and then you have your workers.

SPEAKER_01 21:17 - 21:18

And, What was you?

SPEAKER_01 21:18 - 21:19

I was a worker.

SPEAKER_01 21:19 - 21:19

Okay.

SPEAKER_01 21:20 - 21:21

I was a worker.

SPEAKER_01 21:21 - 21:23

And, and that's how I always saw myself.

SPEAKER_01 21:23 - 21:37

If I wanted to fit in, if I wanted to, gain the love of the Real Madrid fans, you know, there were so many stars in our team, you know, and I saw myself as, I've always seen myself as a, as a worker on, on the pitch.

SPEAKER_01 21:37 - 21:42

And I knew that if I worked harder than any other player, then at least the fans would respect that.

SPEAKER_01 21:43 - 21:45

And I think that Jude's gone in there.

SPEAKER_01 21:45 - 21:47

He's an, he's an exceptional talent.

SPEAKER_01 21:47 - 21:49

He's a star, but he's also a worker.

SPEAKER_01 21:49 - 21:54

And I think that that's why it's been so successful for Jude in his, in his first year.

SPEAKER_01 21:54 - 21:54

Well,

SPEAKER_02 21:54 - 21:58

I think something again, a lot of people, most people won't know about you.

SPEAKER_02 21:58 - 21:59

And you're talking about work rate.

SPEAKER_02 21:59 - 22:03

I remember that's one of the lasting big memories I have of you outside of the pitch.

SPEAKER_02 22:04 - 22:06

We'd, my first ever preseason, we'd done a bleep test.

SPEAKER_02 22:07 - 22:08

You weren't great at it.

SPEAKER_02 22:08 - 22:08

I was poor.

SPEAKER_02 22:09 - 22:10

I just flew on in for my nap.

SPEAKER_02 22:11 - 22:15

So I weren't going to be ready for that, but it looked like you had trained all summer.

SPEAKER_02 22:16 - 22:18

You finished, you and Yorkie completed the bleep test.

SPEAKER_02 22:18 - 22:21

I was standing there, I rang my mate's half and I said, but you wouldn't believe this.

SPEAKER_02 22:21 - 22:24

These two guys, I don't know what they've done all summer, but they ain't done what I've done.

SPEAKER_02 22:24 - 22:26

And they've completed the bleep test.

SPEAKER_01 22:26 - 22:26

Do you know what?

SPEAKER_01 22:26 - 22:28

It's stubbornness in that bleep test.

SPEAKER_01 22:28 - 22:29

Is it?

SPEAKER_01 22:29 - 22:35

It's all about, well, you have to have a little bit of stamina, obviously, but more importantly for me, it was more stubbornness.

SPEAKER_01 22:36 - 22:38

I didn't want to be, I wanted to be the last one to finish.

SPEAKER_01 22:39 - 22:48

And I was watching players drop out, drop out, and then other players will come in, you know, year after year, and there'd be more athletes.

SPEAKER_01 22:48 - 22:51

And I'm thinking, okay, I'm going to have to step it up again.

SPEAKER_01 22:52 - 22:53

Were you training off season?

SPEAKER_01 22:53 - 22:54

No.

SPEAKER_01 22:54 - 22:55

No.

SPEAKER_02 22:56 - 22:58

So how the hell are you doing this then?

SPEAKER_01 22:58 - 23:00

I just weren't doing what you were doing.

SPEAKER_02 23:01 - 23:02

Right, we'll move on.

SPEAKER_02 23:03 - 23:03

We'll move right on.

SPEAKER_02 23:03 - 23:09

You were talking about Jude there, and I look at him, and obviously, as a player, I agree with everything you said about him.

SPEAKER_02 23:10 - 23:19

But as impressive is his ability to be striking these huge deals now off the pitch with Skims, Kim Kardashian's company, the face of Louis Vuitton now.

SPEAKER_02 23:19 - 23:26

When you look at him, or is there anybody else, who do you look at and go, you know what, if I had a blank canvas for that person, I'd love to shape him and help him as well.

SPEAKER_02 23:27 - 23:27

Is he one of those guys?

SPEAKER_01 23:29 - 23:33

I think, like I said, I think Jude's got some really good people around him.

SPEAKER_01 23:33 - 23:36

You know, he's got, his mum and dad are incredible.

SPEAKER_01 23:36 - 23:46

Obviously, he's got his brother as well, but I think every decision Jude's making has been a very good one at the moment.

SPEAKER_01 23:46 - 23:48

You know, and I think that that will continue.

SPEAKER_01 23:50 - 23:57

But obviously, you know, I think that these, these things are always going to come to him.

SPEAKER_01 23:57 - 24:00

You know, if he's doing well on the pitch, then he's going to get,

SPEAKER_01 24:01 - 24:06

I'm sure, many opportunities to, to sign big deals and things like that.

SPEAKER_01 24:06 - 24:23

But he knows, he knows, and I'm sure his mum and dad know, that as long as it's not affecting him on the pitch, then, you know, it doesn't really, I'm not saying it doesn't matter what he does off the pitch, but as long as he's, as long as he's doing it on the pitch, then that's the most important thing.

SPEAKER_02 24:23 - 24:28

What do you think about, or what did you used to think about when a deal would turn up on your desk?

SPEAKER_02 24:29 - 24:32

What were the kind of main drivers as to why you would do them deals?

SPEAKER_02 24:33 - 24:36

Because you are the benchmark, you're the guy who kind of set a present place.

SPEAKER_01 24:36 - 24:38

I think that I always, I always look for the future.

SPEAKER_01 24:39 - 24:46

Is this a good deal, you know, is this going to look a good deal in 10, 15 years time?

SPEAKER_01 24:46 - 24:56

Because I've been lucky, you know, I've been lucky enough to have signed with some great brands and great companies that, you know, has lasted for 10, 15, 20 years.

SPEAKER_01 24:57 - 25:03

You know, I've been with, you know, Adidas for now, for almost 20, 28, 29 years.

SPEAKER_01 25:03 - 25:04

Older than your kids.

SPEAKER_01 25:04 - 25:05

Older than my kids.

SPEAKER_01 25:06 - 25:12

So, you know, those are the things I look at are, is this, is this brand good for me?

SPEAKER_01 25:12 - 25:13

Is it good for my business?

SPEAKER_01 25:14 - 25:17

Um, and is it going to affect my football?

SPEAKER_01 25:17 - 25:18

And that's the first question I'd ask.

SPEAKER_01 25:18 - 25:20

Is it going to affect my football?

SPEAKER_01 25:20 - 25:21

And, and none of them did.

SPEAKER_01 25:22 - 25:28

None, none of the deals that I did over my career, you know, affected me on the pitch.

SPEAKER_01 25:28 - 25:31

You know, people talked about it, but did it affect me?

SPEAKER_02 25:31 - 25:31

No.

SPEAKER_02 25:32 - 25:33

You've got a thick skin, haven't you?

SPEAKER_02 25:33 - 25:35

And I think you'll want to, you know, of course.

SPEAKER_01 25:35 - 25:42

And, you know, I think that I, you know, I had opportunities, I suppose, in my career at times that, um,

SPEAKER_01 25:44 - 25:58

uh, that, that players weren't doing, you know, and players weren't getting these opportunities, you know, but, you know, once I started doing things, then there was other opportunities and other things that were coming up for, for players, you know, in, you know, around.

SPEAKER_02 25:58 - 26:00

What gave you the confidence to do that though?

SPEAKER_02 26:00 - 26:09

Because I remember, look, I was never getting anything on your level, right, but I remember that all of the players, most of the players get, you pay for your country or a Man United, you get offers to do stuff.

SPEAKER_02 26:09 - 26:12

And like you, I was always conscious of, oh, would that impact the career?

SPEAKER_02 26:12 - 26:13

What is Santo going to say?

SPEAKER_02 26:13 - 26:15

How did you block out all the noise?

SPEAKER_02 26:16 - 26:16

Um,

SPEAKER_01 26:17 - 26:17

stubbornness.

SPEAKER_02 26:17 - 26:18

This word keeps coming up,

SPEAKER_01 26:18 - 26:19

stubbornness, I suppose.

SPEAKER_01 26:19 - 26:20

I know, I know, I know.

SPEAKER_01 26:20 - 26:22

It comes up a lot at home as well.

SPEAKER_01 26:22 - 26:25

um, yeah, I am, I am a stubborn person.

SPEAKER_01 26:26 - 26:32

And I suppose if I get it in my head that it's the right thing to do, then I believe it's the right thing to do.

SPEAKER_01 26:32 - 26:40

But it also goes back to what you said about business and, you know, a team, you know, you have to surround yourself with the right people.

SPEAKER_01 26:41 - 26:47

And I've had about six people around me for the last 25 years.

SPEAKER_01 26:47 - 26:58

And one person around me for the last 35 years that always tells me the truth, that always tells me what is good for me and what they believe is good for me.

SPEAKER_01 26:59 - 27:02

And it's the same in football and it's in business.

SPEAKER_01 27:02 - 27:10

You surround yourself with people that are going to be honest with you and also people that are better than you at making these decisions.

SPEAKER_01 27:10 - 27:13

And that's, that's what I've always tried to do.

SPEAKER_02 27:13 - 27:14

I love that.

SPEAKER_02 27:14 - 27:16

Has the stubbornness ever gone wrong and got you into trouble?

SPEAKER_02 27:16 - 27:17

Of course.

SPEAKER_00 27:18 - 27:21

Mostly with my wife because I always think I'm right.

SPEAKER_00 27:22 - 27:22

We all do.

SPEAKER_00 27:22 - 27:24

And she always thinks she's right.

SPEAKER_00 27:24 - 27:26

So, you know, so maybe the stubbornness.

SPEAKER_00 27:26 - 27:26

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 27:27 - 27:37

But talking about those deals, one of them obviously is the Adidas, who you mentioned before and your longstanding relationship with them and hugely successful, but you've, you've had a boot as well that became almost like your boot, the predator.

SPEAKER_02 27:38 - 27:38

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 27:38 - 27:45

There's players now that are sitting there wanting that and it's on the table almost and they're within touching distance of that.

SPEAKER_02 27:45 - 27:48

What are the pressures that come with having your own boot?

SPEAKER_02 27:49 - 27:58

Because I remember I used to watch you by the way, in England or with United, the amount of different boots you had coming through the door with different styles, different, one of your new babies on it, name and stuff like that.

SPEAKER_02 27:58 - 27:59

It was just mad.

SPEAKER_01 27:59 - 28:02

I was like, you know, I'm an East End boy, so we like nice things.

SPEAKER_01 28:04 - 28:12

So I think that with, with me, you know, creating new boots or designing new boots with Adidas over the years, that, that was not pressure.

SPEAKER_01 28:12 - 28:13

That was not pressure.

SPEAKER_01 28:13 - 28:20

But, you know, I suppose when you're with a company as big as them, for the amount of time that you've been with them,

SPEAKER_01 28:21 - 28:25

you know, I think that, you know, that relationship is, is a special one.

SPEAKER_02 28:25 - 28:25

You,

SPEAKER_01 28:26 - 28:29

I'm right in remembering you used to wear a new pair every game.

SPEAKER_01 28:29 - 28:32

It got to that point, actually, funnily enough.

SPEAKER_01 28:32 - 28:37

They, they kind of, I actually used to wear a new pair for warmup.

SPEAKER_01 28:38 - 28:40

Then I'd wear a new pair for the first half.

SPEAKER_01 28:40 - 28:57

And then I'd wear, most of the time it was down to, um, uh, if I'd done that the week before, or if I'd had a bad first half, superstition, and that's what really, but that was later on in my career.

SPEAKER_01 28:57 - 28:59

That wasn't, that wasn't early.

SPEAKER_02 28:59 - 29:01

Did you remember players by boots as a kid?

SPEAKER_02 29:02 - 29:05

Cause I used to think, when I look back, I used to always, I loved that player.

SPEAKER_02 29:05 - 29:08

He used to wear them boots, John Barnes, Deodorus, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02 29:08 - 29:09

And so on.

SPEAKER_02 29:09 - 29:10

Was you like that as well?

SPEAKER_01 29:10 - 29:18

Um, I was like that because I, you know, I was always a fan of, you know, Brian Robson, you know, and I always remember him wearing New Balance.

SPEAKER_01 29:18 - 29:18

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 29:19 - 29:24

Um, and then obviously Glenn Hoddle, he always wore Hummel with a big white tongue flopping over.

SPEAKER_01 29:25 - 29:31

Um, which is why I really wanted to be with Adidas because I wanted to wear the Copas or the World Cups.

SPEAKER_01 29:31 - 29:32

Flap over tongue.

SPEAKER_00 29:32 - 29:32

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 29:32 - 29:36

And then obviously once the Predators came out, I was like, okay, that's my boot.

SPEAKER_01 29:36 - 29:37

That's, that's what I want to wear.

SPEAKER_01 29:37 - 29:39

Cause my kids now are like, ah, dad, the Ronaldo boot.

SPEAKER_01 29:39 - 29:41

I need to do an Ronaldo boot.

SPEAKER_01 29:41 - 29:41

Oh, I know.

SPEAKER_01 29:41 - 29:42

It's mad like, what do you mean?

SPEAKER_01 29:42 - 29:45

And we used to, well, I definitely used to have one pair of boot.

SPEAKER_01 29:45 - 29:49

When I was a kid, I used to have one, at least like one pair of boot for the whole year.

SPEAKER_01 29:49 - 29:49

That was it.

SPEAKER_01 29:50 - 29:50

Oh, there was no changing.

SPEAKER_01 29:50 - 29:51

No, there was no changing.

SPEAKER_01 29:51 - 29:52

That was a crime.

SPEAKER_01 29:52 - 29:53

How dare you ask?

SPEAKER_01 29:53 - 29:53

I know.

SPEAKER_02 29:53 - 29:54

You've got a hole in it.

SPEAKER_02 29:54 - 29:55

Play with it.

SPEAKER_02 29:55 - 29:55

Don't it?

SPEAKER_02 29:56 - 29:57

Talking about kids.

SPEAKER_02 29:58 - 30:00

And I have this conversation with a lot of my mates again as well about,

SPEAKER_02 30:01 - 30:05

we've, we've done well in our careers and we're in doing different businesses now.

SPEAKER_02 30:06 - 30:09

And if you've got two boys playing.

SPEAKER_02 30:09 - 30:09

Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02 30:10 - 30:10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 30:10 - 30:20

How do you go about instilling that hunger, that stubbornness, that drive, that determination that we had into kids that our kids are privileged?

SPEAKER_01 30:20 - 30:22

Well, I think it's very difficult.

SPEAKER_01 30:23 - 30:29

It is difficult because they do have different lives and upbringings to obviously what we had when we were kids.

SPEAKER_01 30:30 - 30:41

But if you bring them up in the right way, you know, and you talk to them enough and you have that relationship with them enough, they have that drive and they have that passion.

SPEAKER_01 30:41 - 30:46

As long as they have a passion, if they have a passion, then you know that they're going to work hard for it.

SPEAKER_01 30:46 - 30:56

You know, I'm lucky with my boys and, and, and obviously, also with, with Harper at 13 years old, you know, they have a passion, you know, Brooklyn's got a passion.

SPEAKER_01 30:56 - 31:02

You know, he's jumped from obviously photography, cooking, cooking, you know, he, so he has a passion.

SPEAKER_01 31:02 - 31:04

So he wants to work hard for it.

SPEAKER_01 31:04 - 31:08

And then you have Romeo with his football or tennis or whatever he's done over the years.

SPEAKER_01 31:08 - 31:09

He has, he has a passion.

SPEAKER_01 31:09 - 31:11

Cruise, passion for music.

SPEAKER_01 31:11 - 31:19

You know, I've never seen someone pick up a guitar and play all night long, you know, as much as, as he does,

SPEAKER_01 31:48 - 31:49

because he's passionate about it.

SPEAKER_01 31:49 - 31:52

you know, when I'm watching my team play, you know.

SPEAKER_02 31:53 - 31:54

So when did you realise you had the passion for cooking?

SPEAKER_02 31:55 - 32:01

Because I see you doing bits and bobs, and I like the, the care you're taking with that is like you crossing, crossing the ball, or trapping into the six yard box.

SPEAKER_01 32:01 - 32:05

Well, since the documentary, everyone's talked about the mushroom moment.

SPEAKER_02 32:05 - 32:06

Yeah, man, what's going on?

SPEAKER_01 32:06 - 32:06

I know.

SPEAKER_01 32:07 - 32:08

People, people like that, by the way.

SPEAKER_01 32:09 - 32:14

A lot of people like the, the care and consideration that I put into grilling a mushroom.

SPEAKER_02 32:15 - 32:17

Is, is that in all different facets of your life though?

SPEAKER_02 32:17 - 32:19

I can imagine like in a bit, in, in, so in an office,

SPEAKER_01 32:19 - 32:20

how does that come out?

SPEAKER_01 32:20 - 32:22

In the office, how does that come out then?

SPEAKER_01 32:22 - 32:29

Well, if you walk into my office, or our office area, where everyone is, it's spotless.

SPEAKER_01 32:30 - 32:30

Is it?

SPEAKER_01 32:30 - 32:31

It's spotless.

SPEAKER_01 32:31 - 32:32

There's no coats on back of chairs.

SPEAKER_01 32:33 - 32:35

They all have to have, be hung up in a certain place.

SPEAKER_01 32:35 - 32:37

Everything has to be kept in a certain place.

SPEAKER_01 32:37 - 32:37

Oh,

SPEAKER_02 32:37 - 32:38

you ain't that dad, are you?

SPEAKER_02 32:38 - 32:38

You ain't that dad.

SPEAKER_01 32:39 - 32:39

I'm that dad.

SPEAKER_01 32:40 - 32:45

I am that, but that's, you know, I think if you're going to do something, you've got to do it to the best of your abilities.

SPEAKER_01 32:45 - 32:48

And, and that's the way I've always done things.

SPEAKER_01 32:48 - 32:50

And, you know, even with cooking, you know, I have to get it right.

SPEAKER_01 32:51 - 32:55

You know, I went through a stage last week when I was in Miami.

SPEAKER_01 32:56 - 33:05

And I, I all of a sudden, I was with one of the, I was with Sergio Busquets, and we were talking about food, and we were talking about Spanish food.

SPEAKER_01 33:05 - 33:09

And he said, oh, I make a great Spanish omelet.

SPEAKER_01 33:09 - 33:11

And I was like, and I had it in my head.

SPEAKER_02 33:12 - 33:12

Has it got potatoes in it?

SPEAKER_02 33:13 - 33:13

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 33:13 - 33:15

Potatoes, eggs, and onions.

SPEAKER_01 33:15 - 33:16

Okay.

SPEAKER_01 33:16 - 33:21

And I had it in my head to perfect, perfect Spanish omelet.

SPEAKER_01 33:21 - 33:26

And I made, for a week, I made a Spanish omelet every day.

SPEAKER_01 33:26 - 33:26

What?

SPEAKER_01 33:26 - 33:27

To perfect it.

SPEAKER_02 33:27 - 33:29

That's some obsessive shit.

SPEAKER_01 33:29 - 33:30

But do you know what?

SPEAKER_01 33:30 - 33:33

It all comes from, it all comes from my mum.

SPEAKER_00 33:33 - 33:34

Really.

SPEAKER_01 33:34 - 33:39

You know, that's really where, you know, my mum used to let me cook with her when I was young.

SPEAKER_01 33:39 - 33:44

And then obviously when I moved to Manchester, and I moved in my own house, you know, I cooked.

SPEAKER_01 33:44 - 33:45

And I love cooking.

SPEAKER_02 33:45 - 33:52

If you've got a date night with a missus, what's the go-to meal that you're going to cook to really kind of like set the fireworks off?

SPEAKER_01 33:53 - 33:58

Well, Victoria always loves, she loves grilled shrimp.

SPEAKER_01 33:58 - 34:03

So for starter, I'd make her some grilled shrimp with,

SPEAKER_01 34:04 - 34:05

with avocado.

SPEAKER_01 34:05 - 34:12

And then for a main, I would make a salt, a sea bass, but I'd salt bake it.

SPEAKER_01 34:12 - 34:13

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01 34:13 - 34:14

So I'd do that.

SPEAKER_01 34:14 - 34:15

She loves that.

SPEAKER_01 34:17 - 34:20

And then for dessert, what would she have for dessert?

SPEAKER_01 34:20 - 34:22

I'm not sure she'd have dessert actually.

SPEAKER_01 34:22 - 34:22

Would she?

SPEAKER_01 34:23 - 34:23

No.

SPEAKER_02 34:24 - 34:25

I'd always have dessert.

SPEAKER_01 34:25 - 34:25

No.

SPEAKER_01 34:25 - 34:26

So that's what I'd make for her.

SPEAKER_01 34:26 - 34:28

And then for me, I'd make a,

SPEAKER_01 34:29 - 34:32

I'd make a nice ragu with fresh pasta.

SPEAKER_02 34:32 - 34:33

I'm coming round for some food.

SPEAKER_01 34:33 - 34:34

I'm getting hungry now.

SPEAKER_02 34:34 - 34:35

Serious.

SPEAKER_02 34:35 - 34:38

But no, it is, I think it's like, I love cooking.

SPEAKER_01 34:39 - 34:39

Like, I love it.

SPEAKER_01 34:40 - 34:40

But do you know what?

SPEAKER_01 34:40 - 34:44

I love the cooking side, but I think more importantly,

SPEAKER_01 34:45 - 34:52

I think when I've looked back at why I love it so much, it's because I'm creating something for whoever's going to eat it.

SPEAKER_01 34:52 - 34:56

And it's most of the time, it's my family and my kids and my wife.

SPEAKER_01 34:56 - 34:59

And I love seeing their reactions to the food.

SPEAKER_01 34:59 - 35:01

And most of the time it's good reactions.

SPEAKER_01 35:02 - 35:06

But really, that's really when I have all the family around me.

SPEAKER_01 35:06 - 35:07

And that's what I love.

SPEAKER_01 35:07 - 35:13

But I don't just get excited about the Michelin star restaurants.

SPEAKER_01 35:13 - 35:15

I get excited about pie mash.

SPEAKER_01 35:15 - 35:16

I get excited about fish and chips.

SPEAKER_01 35:17 - 35:19

You know, I'm passionate about all foods.

SPEAKER_01 35:19 - 35:22

It's not just high-end restaurants.

SPEAKER_02 35:22 - 35:22

No, that's true.

SPEAKER_02 35:22 - 35:25

But the kids in my house, they know when his dad's cooking.

SPEAKER_02 35:25 - 35:26

Because the reggae music's on.

SPEAKER_02 35:27 - 35:28

And the red wine's out.

SPEAKER_01 35:28 - 35:29

And what's your favourite?

SPEAKER_01 35:29 - 35:30

What's your go-to?

SPEAKER_02 35:30 - 35:31

Lamb chops.

SPEAKER_02 35:32 - 35:33

Seasoned, nice.

SPEAKER_02 35:33 - 35:34

Loads of herbs on it.

SPEAKER_01 35:34 - 35:34

Medium red?

SPEAKER_02 35:35 - 35:36

Yeah, medium red, but crispy.

SPEAKER_02 35:37 - 35:37

Okay.

SPEAKER_02 35:37 - 35:38

Yeah, on the outside.

SPEAKER_02 35:38 - 35:41

And then I'll have, I'll probably do some rice.

SPEAKER_02 35:41 - 35:43

And I'll do a nice little,

SPEAKER_02 35:44 - 35:45

what do you, gravy.

SPEAKER_02 35:46 - 35:47

I was going to say juice, but gravy.

SPEAKER_00 35:47 - 35:48

Bit of bistro.

SPEAKER_00 35:48 - 35:49

Bit of bistro.

SPEAKER_00 35:49 - 35:49

Yeah,

SPEAKER_02 35:49 - 35:50

bistro's a part of it.

SPEAKER_02 35:50 - 35:53

But then I'll add some little Caribbean flavours in there and peppers and stuff.

SPEAKER_02 35:53 - 35:54

I'm getting hungry, man.

SPEAKER_02 35:55 - 35:57

Let's move on to one of your other passions.

SPEAKER_02 35:57 - 35:58

You bought a football club.

SPEAKER_02 35:59 - 35:59

I know.

SPEAKER_02 35:59 - 36:00

Like, that is just mental.

SPEAKER_02 36:01 - 36:02

Did you ever imagine

SPEAKER_02 36:03 - 36:05

lacing up your boots as a kid?

SPEAKER_02 36:05 - 36:07

What are you thinking about buying a club?

SPEAKER_02 36:07 - 36:09

Because everything you've done in your life seems quite strategic.

SPEAKER_01 36:10 - 36:20

I wouldn't say it's something that I dreamed of as a kid, but it's definitely something that I thought about as a young player or dreamed about as a young player.

SPEAKER_01 36:20 - 36:24

You know, I always wanted to own a football club.

SPEAKER_01 36:24 - 36:28

You know, I never had aspirations of being a coach or a manager.

SPEAKER_01 36:28 - 36:32

You know, I just didn't think I'd be any good at that.

SPEAKER_01 36:32 - 36:34

But I wanted to own a club.

SPEAKER_01 36:35 - 36:37

I knew I'd be, I knew I'd think I could be good at that.

SPEAKER_01 36:38 - 36:41

And that's what I always wanted.

SPEAKER_01 36:41 - 36:50

And obviously, when I moved to America and I had the opportunity to own a team at the end of, you know, my time at the Galaxy,

SPEAKER_01 36:51 - 36:58

I snapped it up because I knew that that's what I wanted to put in the contract and they gave me it.

SPEAKER_02 36:58 - 37:00

Is that the best deal in football history, that deal?

SPEAKER_02 37:01 - 37:01

It's got to be up there.

SPEAKER_01 37:01 - 37:03

It was a pretty good one, to be fair.

SPEAKER_01 37:03 - 37:04

It was a good one.

SPEAKER_01 37:05 - 37:06

I don't think they'll do it again.

SPEAKER_02 37:07 - 37:08

Like Jordan.

SPEAKER_02 37:08 - 37:09

You're messing it up

SPEAKER_01 37:09 - 37:09

for everyone else.

SPEAKER_01 37:09 - 37:13

I don't think they'll do it again, but you know, I was very lucky.

SPEAKER_01 37:13 - 37:14

And then,

SPEAKER_01 37:15 - 37:18

you know, it was all about picking the place.

SPEAKER_01 37:18 - 37:24

You know, and obviously for me to have played in LA for six years and obviously travelled around America,

SPEAKER_01 37:26 - 37:28

you know, obviously Miami didn't have a team.

SPEAKER_01 37:28 - 37:33

They had a team back in the day, but they didn't have a team at the time.

SPEAKER_01 37:33 - 37:35

And I always loved Miami as a city.

SPEAKER_01 37:35 - 37:39

I hadn't spent much time there, but I knew the passion of the people.

SPEAKER_01 37:39 - 37:42

I knew the diversity of what Miami had.

SPEAKER_01 37:43 - 37:47

And I knew that in the future when we had a team,

SPEAKER_01 37:48 - 37:53

I wanted to be able to attract, you know, some of the best players in the world.

SPEAKER_01 37:54 - 38:01

And when you're living in Miami and you've got that lifestyle, that's an important part of it.

SPEAKER_01 38:01 - 38:04

It's an important draw for players around the world.

SPEAKER_01 38:04 - 38:05

And I think that that's what,

SPEAKER_01 38:07 - 38:15

that's one of the reasons why I was, you know, I was, I had a great time in LA because it was, it was a great city.

SPEAKER_01 38:15 - 38:17

It was a great city for the family.

SPEAKER_01 38:17 - 38:19

You know, the kids had an amazing time.

SPEAKER_01 38:19 - 38:20

Victoria loved it.

SPEAKER_01 38:20 - 38:22

And we were welcomed with open arms.

SPEAKER_01 38:23 - 38:34

So, you know, that, putting all of that into, you know, what I wanted and my vision, you know, I learnt from managers like the boss.

SPEAKER_01 38:34 - 38:37

I learnt from things that he told me over the years.

SPEAKER_01 38:38 - 38:41

I went to him and asked for his advice on, you know,

SPEAKER_02 38:43 - 38:45

I went to him

SPEAKER_01 38:45 - 38:52

once and said to him, you know, how, how, I'm starting this team, how do you, how would you run it?

SPEAKER_01 38:52 - 38:55

How would, you know, your philosophy, I want to learn from you.

SPEAKER_01 38:55 - 39:05

Can you, and he sat me down for a couple of hours and he told me, you know, what I should do and what players I should be looking for and how I should run the academy.

SPEAKER_01 39:06 - 39:08

And that's really what I've tried to do.

SPEAKER_01 39:08 - 39:11

And then I also learnt from people like Florentino Perez.

SPEAKER_01 39:12 - 39:29

You know, because, you know, with Florentino, he has this crazy vision of always bringing the greatest players to the club and building this unbelievable stadium and, you know, with what the boss told me, the boss was like, okay, the academy is really important.

SPEAKER_01 39:30 - 39:37

So when I first moved to LA, I turned around to the commissioner of the league and said, how many academies are in the league?

SPEAKER_01 39:38 - 39:38

He said, none.

SPEAKER_01 39:39 - 39:40

And I was like, how is that possible?

SPEAKER_01 39:40 - 39:41

Where do the players come from?

SPEAKER_01 39:42 - 39:44

And where do, he said, well, there just isn't.

SPEAKER_01 39:44 - 39:52

I said, okay, for longevity and the future of this league and the future of this game in this country, academy systems are important.

SPEAKER_01 39:53 - 40:02

I was brought up in one, you were brought up in one, you know how important academy systems are, you have to have one in each of the clubs in the MLS.

SPEAKER_01 40:02 - 40:08

Now, every one of the clubs in the MLS has that academy systems and all of these young players that are coming through,

SPEAKER_01 40:10 - 40:20

they're all coming through this academy system and that's not just good for the game, it's good for every MLS club, but it's good for the future of the country in America.

SPEAKER_01 40:20 - 40:51

to have all of these players coming through from local areas is such an important part of it and as much as I love seeing the players and the team that we have created at Miami, obviously you've got Leo, you've got Sergio, you've got Julie Alba, you've got Luis Suarez, but when I see them passing around the pitch and all of a sudden they pass to Benjamin Krumashi who has come through our academy from a young kid and is now playing with these

SPEAKER_01 40:51 - 40:58

players, that makes me proud, that makes me proud and it's such an important part of the future of the game there.

SPEAKER_01 40:59 - 41:09

So yeah, it was a great deal, it's been a lot of work and it's been a huge challenge for the last 12 years now,

SPEAKER_01 41:11 - 41:24

but being able to arrive in our stadium and see the players that we have and the success that we have had so far on the pitch and off the pitch,

SPEAKER_01 41:26 - 41:31

all the hard work has been worth it.

SPEAKER_02 41:31 - 41:37

You mentioned talking to the commissioner, is that actually you, David Beckham, talking to the commissioner or is it one of your team?

SPEAKER_01 41:37 - 41:37

Oh no,

SPEAKER_02 41:37 - 41:38

it's me, it's me.

SPEAKER_01 41:39 - 41:45

I've always had a great relationship with the commissioner, Don Garber, and when I first moved to America,

SPEAKER_01 41:47 - 42:04

he knew that I was moving there to be a LA Galaxy player, but he also knew that I was moving there to try and lift the game in the US and that was part of my job as a player, also as a future owner,

SPEAKER_01 42:05 - 42:08

to be able to raise the profile of the game.

SPEAKER_01 42:08 - 42:17

and I love the fact that when I moved there, I think there was only 14 teams in the league, now there's going to be 30, I think next season.

SPEAKER_01 42:19 - 42:20

I think there's 26

SPEAKER_01 42:23 - 42:32

stadiums specifically for football now throughout the league, whereas I think there was probably six when I was there, when I first moved there.

SPEAKER_01 42:33 - 43:00

So a lot has changed over the years and I feel very proud that I've been part of that change, but I know that there's still a lot of work to do, but I think what we've done in Miami, when you bring someone like Leo to America, I always said that it was our gift as an ownership group and as a person that owns the club,

SPEAKER_01 43:02 - 43:20

I wanted to do something for the game, but I also wanted to do something for America because they've given me so much over the years and they've given me so much love that to bring Leo to inspire the next generation of players in America, that's what we wanted to do.

SPEAKER_02 43:20 - 43:22

It's a beautiful gift, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02 43:22 - 43:22

Jesus.

SPEAKER_01 43:22 - 43:34

I mean, honestly, to walk in that stadium and to see him, I still get emotional about it now when I watch him each game, the fact that he is playing at our team, he's playing at my team.

SPEAKER_01 43:34 - 43:42

I can't believe we've got a player of that magnitude playing for our team.

SPEAKER_02 43:42 - 43:43

What's he like behind the scenes?

SPEAKER_02 43:44 - 43:48

Is he great with the kids and time because you don't see a lot of that?

SPEAKER_01 43:48 - 44:03

Do you know, I think that one of the things that I learned from the boss over the years, and it wasn't something that he specifically told me, one of the things that I learned from the boss was it's not about bringing the biggest and best players, it's about bringing the right players.

SPEAKER_01 44:04 - 44:13

If you can bring the biggest and best players that is the right player, then there's not many of them around, but with Leo, that's what we knew that we were bringing.

SPEAKER_01 44:13 - 44:20

And I knew that, yes, he was going to be successful on the field, but I also knew that he was going to help our club off the field as well.

SPEAKER_01 44:20 - 44:29

And I think that that's why it was important to surround himself with the right network, you know, with Sergio, with Luis, with Geordie.

SPEAKER_01 44:29 - 44:40

As soon as you put those people around him, making sure that his family are happy, making sure that his kids have got the right school, making sure all of those elements are so important to bringing a player like that.

SPEAKER_01 44:41 - 44:45

But the one thing that Leo is good at is

SPEAKER_01 44:47 - 44:47

teaching.

SPEAKER_01 44:48 - 44:51

He's good at teaching the young players that are coming in from the academy.

SPEAKER_01 44:51 - 44:55

He doesn't make any player feel below him.

SPEAKER_01 44:56 - 45:04

He's that player that will stay out on the training ground, teaching the young kids, going to watch the academy kids playing.

SPEAKER_01 45:05 - 45:11

He'll be, we've seen it over the years, he'll be the first in the gym and he'll be the last out of the gym.

SPEAKER_02 45:11 - 45:14

It's so surprising because we don't see that, yeah?

SPEAKER_02 45:14 - 45:19

We associate that with his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, but Messi's just natural.

SPEAKER_02 45:19 - 45:22

But he works at this, he's working behind the scenes.

SPEAKER_02 45:22 - 45:23

I don't think

SPEAKER_01 45:23 - 45:26

you get to that level without having that within you.

SPEAKER_01 45:27 - 45:41

You mentioned Cristiano, I've heard that from multiple people about him as a player and how much he works at it and how much he works at the elements that he's been praised at for many, many years.

SPEAKER_01 45:41 - 45:44

But Leo, for me,

SPEAKER_01 45:46 - 45:47

he's,

SPEAKER_01 45:49 - 45:52

I'll take you back to the first day that he came into our training ground.

SPEAKER_01 45:53 - 46:03

he arrived at about 6.50 in the morning and there was nobody in the training facility apart from one guy to let him in.

SPEAKER_01 46:03 - 46:05

He arrived at 6.50.

SPEAKER_02 46:06 - 46:07

That's nuts, man.

SPEAKER_01 46:08 - 46:09

And the team weren't training until 10.

SPEAKER_01 46:11 - 46:12

Team weren't training until 10.

SPEAKER_01 46:12 - 46:13

What's he doing then?

SPEAKER_01 46:14 - 46:14

Preparing.

SPEAKER_01 46:15 - 46:16

Preparing.

SPEAKER_01 46:17 - 46:19

He's in the gym, he's warming up,

SPEAKER_01 46:20 - 46:34

he's doing all of the things that you expect a young kid to do and he's still doing them now at his age and everything that he's won in his career you'd expect him to be a bit more relaxed but he's,

SPEAKER_01 46:35 - 46:38

if I had to describe him with one, he's a winner.

SPEAKER_01 46:38 - 46:42

As simple as that is a winner and not in

SPEAKER_01 46:44 - 46:50

the sense of what he's won but he's still hungry.

SPEAKER_01 46:50 - 47:04

He's still hungry for championships, he still gets angry at players for not doing the right thing, he still gets angry when he loses games, you know, those kind of things, even when he's not playing he gets angry.

SPEAKER_01 47:04 - 47:11

You know, he's on the side of, you know, when he's not playing, he's been injured, he's there at every game.

SPEAKER_01 47:11 - 47:14

He doesn't have to be there at every game but he's there at every game.

SPEAKER_01 47:14 - 47:17

That's the type of player and person he is, you know,

SPEAKER_01 47:18 - 47:20

it's unbelievable to see.

SPEAKER_02 47:20 - 47:25

Would you go as far as to say probably the most dedicated, hungriest footballer you've been around?

SPEAKER_01 47:27 - 47:39

At his level without a doubt, at his level without a doubt, you know, to still be like he is now is unbelievable but we knew that that's what we were bringing.

SPEAKER_02 47:41 - 47:46

And going back to you on that, you had crazy drive, crazy determination and application.

SPEAKER_02 47:46 - 47:48

Where did you get yours from?

SPEAKER_02 47:48 - 47:49

Where does that come from?

SPEAKER_01 47:50 - 47:50

My dad.

SPEAKER_02 47:50 - 47:50

Is it?

SPEAKER_01 47:51 - 47:51

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 47:52 - 47:53

My dad and my upbringing.

SPEAKER_01 47:54 - 48:03

You know, I knew how hard my mum and dad worked, you know, over, you know, my, you know, when I was growing up

SPEAKER_01 48:05 - 48:06

and I didn't want to let them down.

SPEAKER_01 48:06 - 48:13

You know, they'd put so much into my career from such a young age.

SPEAKER_01 48:13 - 48:17

They were every game that I played, every training session that I did.

SPEAKER_01 48:17 - 48:20

They spent money to get me to different places.

SPEAKER_01 48:20 - 48:23

They spent money to buy me boots every year.

SPEAKER_01 48:24 - 48:37

You know, I never wanted to let my mum and dad down and that's really, you know, my dad, you know, used to come in at 8 o'clock at night and he'd still, he'd come straight out into the garden and play keep up with me.

SPEAKER_01 48:37 - 48:39

You know, and he'll take me over the park.

SPEAKER_01 48:40 - 48:47

You know, those are the kind of things that made me kind of work harder when I was a young kid.

SPEAKER_02 48:47 - 48:59

We'd done an interview with Cristiano not long ago and he spoke about how how do you get the hunger into your kids and that drive and that and determination and he was talking about they just watch me.

SPEAKER_02 49:00 - 49:03

I'll just do what I do and a big part of it is for them to see.

SPEAKER_02 49:03 - 49:05

Is that why you're continuously working?

SPEAKER_02 49:05 - 49:08

We talked about when you first come in, you're always here, there and doing loads of different things.

SPEAKER_02 49:08 - 49:11

There's one of those for your kids to see, listen, you've still got to work.

SPEAKER_01 49:11 - 49:12

Without a doubt.

SPEAKER_01 49:12 - 49:13

Without a doubt.

SPEAKER_01 49:13 - 49:16

You know, a lot of people have said to me I've been retired now for,

SPEAKER_01 49:17 - 49:23

it must be 12 years from the game and people turned around to me say, why don't you relax?

SPEAKER_01 49:23 - 49:24

Why don't you go on holiday?

SPEAKER_01 49:24 - 49:27

Why don't you just go and do I was like, well there's time for that.

SPEAKER_01 49:27 - 49:30

You know, I can do that but I like to work.

SPEAKER_01 49:30 - 49:50

You know, I like to work and I've, you know, I've built the business around that and I think that, you know, I'm very lucky to have the business and the people in the business that I have and there's responsibilities that come with that but the reason that I work the way I work is because I want to set the right example for my kids.

SPEAKER_01 49:50 - 49:55

You know, my kids saw their dad retire from playing football, you know, 12 years ago.

SPEAKER_01 49:56 - 50:05

It would be easy for me to just sit back and enjoy it and do something from time to time but I like coming into the office every day.

SPEAKER_01 50:06 - 50:13

I like doing the things that I do and like I said, I also have responsibilities but the main reason is because I want to set the right example for my kids.

SPEAKER_02 50:14 - 50:14

That's good.

SPEAKER_02 50:14 - 50:18

Can you give people hunger or is it something that is in you?

SPEAKER_01 50:20 - 50:21

Can you give it to them?

SPEAKER_01 50:23 - 50:23

I think you can.

SPEAKER_01 50:24 - 50:25

I think you can.

SPEAKER_01 50:25 - 50:39

You can teach them and then it's up to them to kind of take it on from there but me and Victoria have always been hard working and I think that our kids have seen that over the years.

SPEAKER_01 50:40 - 50:41

We've worked very hard, the two of us.

SPEAKER_01 50:42 - 50:46

She's had a business that's been going now for just over 17 years.

SPEAKER_01 50:47 - 50:47

My missus loves it.

SPEAKER_01 50:47 - 50:49

It's good to be fair.

SPEAKER_01 50:49 - 50:50

It's good.

SPEAKER_01 50:51 - 50:53

But she's worked at it and it's not been easy

SPEAKER_01 50:55 - 50:57

but the hard work's starting to pay off.

SPEAKER_02 50:58 - 51:00

You inspired me in terms of ownership.

SPEAKER_02 51:01 - 51:06

I've had quite a few different people come to me, big consortiums, a lot of money, never at the right time.

SPEAKER_02 51:06 - 51:09

Now I'm getting a bit older and things are shaping out differently.

SPEAKER_02 51:09 - 51:12

I'm looking at maybe going into that world.

SPEAKER_02 51:13 - 51:19

If you were going to go watch out for this, what would be one of the first things that comes to mind in terms of going into ownership?

SPEAKER_01 51:20 - 51:26

I suppose the people that you're going into it with, more importantly.

SPEAKER_01 51:26 - 51:37

You have to, you know, of course you make mistakes over time but always surround yourself with the right people.

SPEAKER_01 51:38 - 51:40

And I'm lucky.

SPEAKER_01 51:40 - 51:41

I'm very lucky.

SPEAKER_01 51:41 - 51:47

I have my business partner that has been my friend since I was 14, 15 years old.

SPEAKER_01 51:48 - 51:52

And I'm lucky enough to have him now running the business with me.

SPEAKER_01 51:53 - 51:54

And we make the decisions together.

SPEAKER_01 51:55 - 52:02

But I've also, and we have also surrounded ourselves with really good people that help us make the right decisions as well.

SPEAKER_02 52:02 - 52:07

What are different aspects or a couple of different aspects you go, you know what, to succeed you do need this though?

SPEAKER_01 52:07 - 52:07

Hard work.

SPEAKER_02 52:08 - 52:09

I love that.

SPEAKER_02 52:09 - 52:10

Simple, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02 52:10 - 52:10

You don't change,

SPEAKER_01 52:11 - 52:11

is it?

SPEAKER_01 52:11 - 52:11

Hard work.

SPEAKER_01 52:11 - 52:16

It's not, you know, it's not anything, you know, it's not anything groundbreaking.

SPEAKER_01 52:17 - 52:19

It's as simple as that, you know.

SPEAKER_01 52:19 - 52:24

Sometimes I'm the first one in the office turning the lights on and then I'm the last one out of the office turning them off.

SPEAKER_01 52:24 - 52:26

And it sets the right example.

SPEAKER_01 52:27 - 52:28

You know, I can't do that every time.

SPEAKER_01 52:29 - 52:33

But when I can, I do and I think it sets the right example.

SPEAKER_01 52:33 - 52:36

It sets the right example for the team that we have.

SPEAKER_01 52:36 - 52:38

And everyone knows that, you know, I'm

SPEAKER_01 52:40 - 52:41

always professional.

SPEAKER_01 52:41 - 52:43

I'm always hard working.

SPEAKER_01 52:43 - 52:44

I'll always over deliver.

SPEAKER_01 52:46 - 52:51

And I'm lucky that I have a team that do exactly the same thing.

SPEAKER_01 52:51 - 52:52

Does exactly the same thing.

SPEAKER_02 52:52 - 52:53

Always over deliver.

SPEAKER_02 52:53 - 52:54

I like that.

SPEAKER_02 52:54 - 52:54

Always.

SPEAKER_02 52:55 - 52:57

You've done that as a player, I think, as well.

SPEAKER_02 52:58 - 52:59

You did.

SPEAKER_02 52:59 - 52:59

I don't know.

SPEAKER_02 53:00 - 53:01

You've produced, man.

SPEAKER_02 53:01 - 53:02

You've produced the

SPEAKER_00 53:02 - 53:02

goods.

SPEAKER_00 53:02 - 53:02

I try.

SPEAKER_02 53:02 - 53:03

I try.

SPEAKER_02 53:03 - 53:04

What actually makes a good owner?

SPEAKER_02 53:04 - 53:09

I know you're saying about work hard, but like, obviously, there's a lot of surprises you get as a new owner.

SPEAKER_02 53:10 - 53:11

But what makes a good

SPEAKER_01 53:11 - 53:12

owner?

SPEAKER_01 53:12 - 53:12

Leadership.

SPEAKER_01 53:13 - 53:15

You have to lead by example.

SPEAKER_01 53:16 - 53:27

And you also, to be a good leader, you also have to understand that you have people around you that are a lot more cleverer than you are.

SPEAKER_01 53:27 - 53:33

And if you can accept that fact, then you're going to have a successful business.

SPEAKER_01 53:33 - 53:43

Because I think to be a good leader, yes, you can work hard, you set the right example, you turn up earlier and you leave late and you make all those decisions.

SPEAKER_01 53:43 - 53:49

But you have to have people around you that are better and cleverer than you.

SPEAKER_02 53:49 - 53:50

Have you always been a leader?

SPEAKER_02 53:51 - 53:57

I know you became captain of England, but when you were younger, was you always a captain or did you grow into one?

SPEAKER_01 53:57 - 53:59

I think I grew into one.

SPEAKER_01 53:59 - 54:00

I think I grew into one.

SPEAKER_01 54:01 - 54:07

Maybe it was always there and maybe that's what brought it out of me, you know, being given the captain's armband for my country.

SPEAKER_01 54:08 - 54:10

But did I ever see myself as a leader?

SPEAKER_01 54:11 - 54:11

No.

SPEAKER_01 54:11 - 54:33

I never saw myself as a leader, but I think that when I got that opportunity, I felt that I grew into it and I felt that I'd been part of enough teams with enough great leaders in and been managed and coached by some of the best in the world to then take it on myself.

SPEAKER_02 54:34 - 54:36

And you look at the leadership now, obviously it's changed at Man United.

SPEAKER_02 54:37 - 54:38

Ineos have come in now.

SPEAKER_02 54:38 - 54:39

How do you see that?

SPEAKER_02 54:39 - 54:42

And are you excited by the new addition to the club?

SPEAKER_01 54:43 - 54:47

Well, I think that it definitely needed change.

SPEAKER_01 54:47 - 55:07

I think speaking as a United fan, you know, I think that, you know, many people had said that, you know, the club needed change and it needed a fresh perspective in how this club needs to be run and the decisions that are made.

SPEAKER_01 55:08 - 55:09

I really like Jim.

SPEAKER_01 55:10 - 55:26

You know, I've met him a few times over the years with a few mutual friends and, you know, I think that he's a fan and obviously he's a great businessman as well, one of the best and one of the biggest.

SPEAKER_01 55:26 - 55:35

But I think more importantly, the fans see that he cares and I think that that's a big part of it.

SPEAKER_01 55:35 - 55:55

I think obviously the fans had lost faith with obviously the leadership over the years and obviously seeing Jim now come in, I think that they've seen that, you know, he really cares about, you know, what he wants to do and what he wants to create.

SPEAKER_01 55:55 - 55:57

So, you know, hopefully

SPEAKER_01 55:58 - 55:59

you know, things will change.

SPEAKER_01 56:00 - 56:01

But these things take time.

SPEAKER_01 56:01 - 56:03

These things take time.

SPEAKER_01 56:03 - 56:12

And, you know, we, I think we have been quite patient as United fans over the years, but, you know, we want those good old days back.

SPEAKER_01 56:12 - 56:16

We want, you know, we want those days back and the sooner the better.

SPEAKER_02 56:17 - 56:20

Just finishing on leadership and I think there's always tough decisions in leadership

SPEAKER_02 56:21 - 56:29

and going into business you probably sometimes don't consider them a lot, but you had a tough decision in actually sacking one of your best mates in Phil Neville.

SPEAKER_02 56:29 - 56:30

How does that feel?

SPEAKER_02 56:31 - 56:32

How do you approach that?

SPEAKER_02 56:32 - 56:35

And then how do you come up, is Gary Neville ringing you going, listen, this is how you do it?

SPEAKER_01 56:38 - 56:42

No, I didn't speak to Gary about it at all.

SPEAKER_01 56:43 - 56:52

You know, Phil has been in management for a long time, you know, and he knows what happens in management.

SPEAKER_01 56:52 - 57:02

And I think when I first bought in Phil to manage the team in Miami, I knew what he was going to do.

SPEAKER_01 57:02 - 57:04

I knew he was going to steady the ship.

SPEAKER_01 57:04 - 57:19

I knew that he was going to bring the work ethic that I'd seen over the years and he's kind of everything had to be perfect, you know, with Phil and he brought everyone together and he changed that club overnight.

SPEAKER_01 57:20 - 57:30

You know, what the work that Phil did was incredible, but Phil knew that it's, and he said the same, it's, you know, if I'm not getting the results, I know what's going to happen.

SPEAKER_01 57:31 - 57:33

And we're close enough to have that conversation.

SPEAKER_01 57:33 - 57:40

You know, when he first came in, I said, Phil, I don't want this to affect our friendship.

SPEAKER_01 57:41 - 57:42

He said, I get it.

SPEAKER_01 57:42 - 57:43

He said, it won't.

SPEAKER_01 57:43 - 57:49

He said, when the time is, when the time's right, if it's right, we'll both know.

SPEAKER_01 57:49 - 57:59

And we had a very sensible conversation and, you know, but I will never underestimate what he did for the club.

SPEAKER_01 57:59 - 58:04

You know, for those couple of seasons, he was unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01 58:04 - 58:09

You know, his coaching staff and everything that he did, you know, at the club was incredible.

SPEAKER_01 58:10 - 58:17

And unfortunately, you know, the results weren't great and, you know, he kind of accepted that.

SPEAKER_02 58:18 - 58:28

Just take me back to that though, because I can't imagine how difficult, I can't imagine how difficult that is, having to kind of put your shirt and tie on in the morning, knowing that you're going in to say to your mate, this and thanks, but no thanks now.

SPEAKER_01 58:28 - 58:33

I think it was one of the most difficult things that I'd had to do.

SPEAKER_01 58:33 - 58:49

You know, even though me and Phil had spoke about it, you know, when he first came on as Miami coach, I knew that if it came to this moment, it was going to be difficult, no matter, you know, what time it happened and when it happened.

SPEAKER_01 58:50 - 58:54

So it was a really difficult, you know, conversation.

SPEAKER_01 58:55 - 59:03

But in all honesty, you know, Phil's an ex-player, is an ex-player that has been in the game for a long time.

SPEAKER_01 59:03 - 59:07

He's been through his ups and downs, you know, on the pitch.

SPEAKER_01 59:08 - 59:20

And, you know, he just said, you know, we both, he picked, I'd called him and said, you know, we're going to meet and, you know, he said, I know, he said, I know.

SPEAKER_01 59:20 - 59:21

I can imagine Phil.

SPEAKER_01 59:21 - 59:27

And then, to be honest, we walked in the room and, you know, we hugged.

SPEAKER_01 59:27 - 59:34

We, you know, it was quite emotional on my side just purely because I didn't want to sack a friend.

SPEAKER_01 59:34 - 59:36

I didn't want to get rid of Phil.

SPEAKER_01 59:36 - 59:39

But I think at the end of the day, he accepted it

SPEAKER_02 59:39 - 59:42

like you would think he would.

SPEAKER_02 59:42 - 59:42

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 59:43 - 59:45

Well, we're talking about old school stuff here.

SPEAKER_02 59:45 - 59:50

I've got something about myself here that I need you to get your eyes on and just give me a judgment.

SPEAKER_02 59:50 - 59:51

This is 2004.

SPEAKER_02 59:52 - 59:52

An honest judgment.

SPEAKER_02 59:52 - 59:53

Be honest, man.

SPEAKER_02 59:53 - 59:53

Brutal.

SPEAKER_02 59:53 - 59:55

We're used to having hard conversations.

SPEAKER_02 59:55 - 59:56

That's our industry.

SPEAKER_02 59:56 - 59:57

That's what it's about.

SPEAKER_02 59:57 - 59:58

This was 2004.

SPEAKER_02 59:59 - 59:59

Yep.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:00 - 01:00:03

Scalzi, myself, Wazza, Alan Smith and John O'Shea.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:04 - 01:00:04

Oh, my God.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:04 - 01:00:11

I remember, without you even showing me this, I remember, was it a night out in Manchester?

SPEAKER_01 01:00:11 - 01:00:14

You were walking down the road like a bad boy band.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:15 - 01:00:16

A bad boy band, yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:17 - 01:00:17

That's exactly it.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:18 - 01:00:20

Just talk me through the outfits there, please.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:20 - 01:00:22

I think Scalzi still wears that outfit now.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:23 - 01:00:25

To be fair, I actually think Scalzi's the best dress there.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:26 - 01:00:26

Shut up.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:26 - 01:00:27

Come on, bruv, please.

SPEAKER_00 01:00:27 - 01:00:27

I do.

SPEAKER_00 01:00:27 - 01:00:28

Don't do that to me, man.

SPEAKER_00 01:00:29 - 01:00:30

Smudger, I don't know what's going on there.

SPEAKER_00 01:00:30 - 01:00:31

The neckline's nice.

SPEAKER_00 01:00:31 - 01:00:32

Yeah, the neckline.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:33 - 01:00:33

My colours.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:33 - 01:00:35

He's just come out of the gym.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:36 - 01:00:38

Your colour, that's a big colour.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:38 - 01:00:39

It is, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01 01:00:39 - 01:00:40

They were in them.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:40 - 01:00:41

You had a couple of them around them.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:41 - 01:00:43

To be fair, it's not a bad picture.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:44 - 01:00:45

He gets hammered online, you know.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:45 - 01:00:47

I get hammered, that gets thrown at me all the time.

SPEAKER_01 01:00:48 - 01:00:51

I mean, it's not, it is like a bad boy band.

SPEAKER_02 01:00:52 - 01:00:55

Have you got any pictures like that that you go,

SPEAKER_02 01:00:56 - 01:00:57

if I could get rid of that one?

SPEAKER_02 01:00:58 - 01:00:59

Which one is it?

SPEAKER_01 01:00:59 - 01:01:00

No, there's none I'd get rid of.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:00 - 01:01:01

No?

SPEAKER_01 01:01:01 - 01:01:08

Because, you know what it's like, you don't regret any of it, you just think that was a moment in time.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:09 - 01:01:09

That's what I always say.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:10 - 01:01:15

You know, in the 90s, we all wore flares and bell-bottoms.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:15 - 01:01:16

These are back again, the flares.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:16 - 01:01:17

Yeah, there you go.

SPEAKER_02 01:01:18 - 01:01:25

You created like a lane for footballers in terms of like style before it was even accepted to do so.

SPEAKER_02 01:01:26 - 01:01:34

But what was like behind your willingness to kind of go out there and be the first one and to accept all the criticism and negativity that might come your way doing that?

SPEAKER_01 01:01:34 - 01:01:38

There was never really a purpose behind any of it, really.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:38 - 01:01:42

You know, I did it when I was in the right mood to do something different, you know.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:42 - 01:01:47

And, you know, when I first had the mohawk, that was for a photo shoot.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:48 - 01:01:51

I was doing one of the first photo shoots that I ever did.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:51 - 01:01:56

And the photographer was like, how do you feel about like just, you know, doing a mohawk?

SPEAKER_01 01:01:56 - 01:01:57

And I was like, yeah, I'll do that.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:58 - 01:01:58

Wow.

SPEAKER_01 01:01:58 - 01:02:01

So it was just an off-the-cuff kind of thing.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:01 - 01:02:11

And most of my decisions of what I wore, the front covers that I would do, my hairstyles really would come off the cuff.

SPEAKER_02 01:02:12 - 01:02:14

That is nuts because there were so many mad ones.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:14 - 01:02:19

And I didn't, I didn't, I was never bothered about, I was never bothered about what people said.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:19 - 01:02:19

Never.

SPEAKER_02 01:02:19 - 01:02:22

I suppose if you thought about it for too long, you'd probably not do it, wouldn't it?

SPEAKER_01 01:02:23 - 01:02:25

Well, I'd probably still do it.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:25 - 01:02:25

Stubborn.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:25 - 01:02:26

Stubborn.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:28 - 01:02:32

But, you know, even my dad would call me up and be like, boy, are you sure about that?

SPEAKER_02 01:02:32 - 01:02:32

Is that what he calls you, boy?

SPEAKER_01 01:02:33 - 01:02:33

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:34 - 01:02:35

I love that.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:35 - 01:02:36

He'd be like, boy, are you sure?

SPEAKER_01 01:02:36 - 01:02:38

And I'd be like, yeah, dad, it's fine.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:39 - 01:02:40

I can change it tomorrow.

SPEAKER_02 01:02:40 - 01:02:49

You know when you look at the players now, because I see a lot of players now, they're into the fashion, all of their Instagram is, I don't even know some players are footballers because it's all about what I wore.

SPEAKER_02 01:02:49 - 01:02:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:02:49 - 01:02:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:02:50 - 01:02:57

Do you still think you'd be the main man if you were playing today, fashion-wise, given how much interest and kind of effort these guys put into it?

SPEAKER_01 01:02:57 - 01:02:59

Um, maybe.

SPEAKER_01 01:02:59 - 01:03:02

I actually didn't put too much effort into it.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:02 - 01:03:04

I just kind of wore what I wanted.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:04 - 01:03:04

It just happened.

SPEAKER_00 01:03:04 - 01:03:05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:05 - 01:03:06

I just woke up like that.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:06 - 01:03:06

No.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:07 - 01:03:09

I, you know, I just, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:09 - 01:03:11

I, I always liked fashion.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:11 - 01:03:13

I always did things there.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:13 - 01:03:17

Even when I was a page boy for my mum's best friend when I was a kid.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:17 - 01:03:35

You know, I was given the opportunity as a, you know, as a kid when I was 12 years old or 11 years old and I was page boy for one of my mum's friends and I had the opportunity to either, she gave me the opportunity to either wear a suit or knickerbockers.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:35 - 01:03:37

You know what knickerbockers are?

SPEAKER_01 01:03:37 - 01:03:44

So knickerbockers with white silk socks and a pair of like ballet shoes and I wore that.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:45 - 01:03:45

Did you?

SPEAKER_01 01:03:46 - 01:03:47

So, I, so I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:47 - 01:03:51

There was always something in me that liked, you know, dressing different.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:51 - 01:03:52

Well, you both worn ballet shoes then.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:52 - 01:03:52

Wow.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:52 - 01:03:54

It's one thing we both want together.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:54 - 01:03:54

Wow.

SPEAKER_01 01:03:54 - 01:03:55

Yours is slightly bigger than mine.

SPEAKER_02 01:03:56 - 01:03:57

Yeah, that's the problem.

SPEAKER_02 01:03:58 - 01:04:02

If I was going to go like, give me a top couple, two, three players now, dress-wise, style-wise.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:02 - 01:04:07

I know more basketball players than footballers and their style.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:07 - 01:04:09

That's because they do the runway almost on the way to the

SPEAKER_01 01:04:09 - 01:04:10

games and it's a big thing, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01 01:04:10 - 01:04:11

It's a big thing.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:12 - 01:04:13

See, Barcelona were doing that before.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:14 - 01:04:21

Yeah, funnily enough, our team started doing it a couple of times and I stopped that.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:21 - 01:04:22

What?

SPEAKER_01 01:04:23 - 01:04:23

What?

SPEAKER_02 01:04:24 - 01:04:27

The man about fashion, the man who broke down all the barriers.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:28 - 01:04:29

Yeah, but we weren't winning games at that point.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:30 - 01:04:31

That's the key, see?

SPEAKER_02 01:04:31 - 01:04:32

We weren't winning games.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:32 - 01:04:36

That's like, I don't want your, if I'm an owner, I don't want to see you on social media if we're seventh or eighth.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:36 - 01:04:37

That's exactly what it was.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:37 - 01:04:40

I don't want to see you coming in in different fits every day.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:40 - 01:04:44

If we're top of the league and we're winning, by all means, you

SPEAKER_01 01:04:44 - 01:04:44

can do that.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:44 - 01:04:44

There you go.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:45 - 01:04:46

To a point.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:46 - 01:04:47

Yeah?

SPEAKER_01 01:04:47 - 01:04:47

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:47 - 01:04:50

I can't believe that Mr. Fashion has said there's no fashion going on at my football club.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:51 - 01:04:51

That's nuts.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:52 - 01:04:53

Well, they can still do it.

SPEAKER_01 01:04:53 - 01:04:57

They just don't want to see it on social media if we're actually losing games.

SPEAKER_02 01:04:57 - 01:05:00

All right, listen, it's been a great time talking to you.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:01 - 01:05:06

But the last thing I want to ask you, I can't let you leave this room without speaking to you about some of the best players you've played with.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:07 - 01:05:07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:07 - 01:05:13

I want you to give me a five-a-side team of the best players that you've played with and a little bit of a background on them.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:15 - 01:05:16

No goalkeeper.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:16 - 01:05:17

No goalkeeper.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:17 - 01:05:20

I was just about to say, can I not have a goalkeeper?

SPEAKER_02 01:05:20 - 01:05:21

They're not really footballers,

SPEAKER_01 01:05:21 - 01:05:21

are they?

SPEAKER_01 01:05:21 - 01:05:22

All right, okay.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:22 - 01:05:23

No, not at all.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:26 - 01:05:26

Okay.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:27 - 01:05:35

I would have to say Roberto Carlos because he can play in defence and attack.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:36 - 01:05:39

He used to play more attack than defence, to be fair.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:40 - 01:05:42

And then I would have to say

SPEAKER_01 01:05:44 - 01:05:45

Maldini.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:45 - 01:05:46

Did you play with him?

SPEAKER_01 01:05:46 - 01:05:47

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:47 - 01:05:47

Milan.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:47 - 01:05:48

Milan, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:05:49 - 01:05:50

Paolo.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:50 - 01:05:51

I thought I had a chance to get in the team.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:52 - 01:05:55

And then, actually I forgot about you.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:55 - 01:05:56

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_01 01:05:57 - 01:06:01

And then I would say Zizou.

SPEAKER_02 01:06:02 - 01:06:03

Nice.

SPEAKER_02 01:06:03 - 01:06:05

Give me something that you haven't spoke about about him.

SPEAKER_02 01:06:06 - 01:06:07

Like, how was he this good?

SPEAKER_02 01:06:07 - 01:06:09

Like, what did he do at a moment where you just...

SPEAKER_01 01:06:09 - 01:06:09

Do you know what?

SPEAKER_01 01:06:10 - 01:06:17

He just, he's one of the, not just one of the greatest players that I've ever played with, one of the hardest trainers.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:18 - 01:06:22

And also, just cool.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:23 - 01:06:23

It's just cool.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:24 - 01:06:25

You know, without, without trying.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:26 - 01:06:28

You play him a ball anywhere on the pitch.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:28 - 01:06:31

Any height, any level, any speed.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:31 - 01:06:35

He'd bring it down like it was just one of those things that he does.

SPEAKER_02 01:06:35 - 01:06:38

And he's got possibly one of the best headbutts I've ever seen on the pitch.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:38 - 01:06:44

To be fair, people, people literally used to turn up at the Bernabeu to watch him just control the ball.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:45 - 01:06:46

That's it.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:46 - 01:06:46

That's it.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:46 - 01:06:50

Because it just, it was, it was like a, it's like watching a ballerina.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:50 - 01:06:52

Just the way he plays is so elegant.

SPEAKER_01 01:06:53 - 01:06:55

Everything about him is elegant.

SPEAKER_02 01:06:55 - 01:06:58

I've met a lot of, all the best, all the greats I've met him.

SPEAKER_02 01:06:58 - 01:06:59

Yeah, the ones that are still here.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:00 - 01:07:01

He's got a different aura.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:02 - 01:07:02

Ain't it?

SPEAKER_01 01:07:02 - 01:07:03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:03 - 01:07:05

He ain't even talking a lot either.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:05 - 01:07:06

I don't say much, does he?

SPEAKER_02 01:07:06 - 01:07:07

He's just like almost like, can I talk to him?

SPEAKER_01 01:07:07 - 01:07:15

And that's when you know he's so special, Zizou, because he walks into a room and without even look, without even seeing him come in, you know someone's walked in.

SPEAKER_01 01:07:15 - 01:07:23

The next one would have to be one of the greatest and most natural goal scorers that I have ever, ever seen.

SPEAKER_01 01:07:24 - 01:07:24

Ronaldo.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:25 - 01:07:26

Oh, nein.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:26 - 01:07:28

Just tell the younger audience, please, about this guy.

SPEAKER_02 01:07:28 - 01:07:30

What was great about him?

SPEAKER_01 01:07:30 - 01:07:38

I think when you watch Ronnie play back in the day, I mean, he's

SPEAKER_01 01:07:39 - 01:07:41

electrifying on every level.

SPEAKER_01 01:07:42 - 01:07:48

One of our first training sessions was in Korea, I think, or China.

SPEAKER_01 01:07:48 - 01:07:49

I'm not sure where we were at the time.

SPEAKER_01 01:07:51 - 01:07:57

And the ball had just been played across to him and all he had to do was put it in the goal.

SPEAKER_01 01:07:57 - 01:08:01

And as he's played across to him, I'm trying to defend it.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:01 - 01:08:02

So I've slid across.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:03 - 01:08:07

And as I'm sliding across, I thought he was just going to play it first time into the goal.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:07 - 01:08:09

And as I'm sliding across, he just puts his foot on the ball.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:10 - 01:08:15

And as I'm sliding past, he just watches me like that with the biggest smile on his face.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:15 - 01:08:16

And he just taps it in.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:16 - 01:08:17

And I was like, oh, God.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:18 - 01:08:18

Wow.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:19 - 01:08:21

So, so, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:21 - 01:08:21

So.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:21 - 01:08:22

What was he laughing at night out?

SPEAKER_01 01:08:23 - 01:08:23

Don't know.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:23 - 01:08:24

Never went out of him.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:24 - 01:08:24

Don't.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:27 - 01:08:28

He was mad.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:28 - 01:08:29

I've seen him in San Jose once.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:29 - 01:08:33

We had a lot of dinners together and he's, he's, he's the best.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:33 - 01:08:34

He's the best.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:34 - 01:08:36

The funniest, kindest.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:37 - 01:08:38

He's a really kind person.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:38 - 01:08:38

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:38 - 01:08:43

And he really helped me at Real Madrid and helped Victoria and the kids.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:44 - 01:08:48

You know, he used to have these Brazilian barbecues around his house on a Sunday.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:48 - 01:08:51

You know, all of his family, all of the friends, few of the players.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:51 - 01:08:54

And we all used to go around, me, Victoria and the kids.

SPEAKER_01 01:08:55 - 01:09:02

And it really helped us at the time because you need, you need, you know, people like that, that help you when you move into different countries.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:02 - 01:09:04

And he was, he was unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:06 - 01:09:07

Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:07 - 01:09:08

My last one.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:09 - 01:09:10

Do you know what I want?

SPEAKER_01 01:09:10 - 01:09:10

I want to.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:11 - 01:09:11

I know you're going to pick.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:12 - 01:09:13

I'm going to say Keeney.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:13 - 01:09:13

I knew it.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:13 - 01:09:13

I knew it.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:14 - 01:09:14

I'm going to say Keeney.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:15 - 01:09:24

You know, you need a leader and you need someone that's going to actually tackle and fight and, and, and be the player that he is.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:24 - 01:09:25

I'm going to have to say Keeney.

SPEAKER_02 01:09:25 - 01:09:31

Get a bit more on him, like, because obviously people see him on the telly, they don't, a lot of kids and young people don't even know him as a footballer.

SPEAKER_02 01:09:31 - 01:09:32

They just hear that he was a great player.

SPEAKER_02 01:09:32 - 01:09:34

What was so great about him?

SPEAKER_02 01:09:34 - 01:09:36

Forget about leadership, about as a player.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:37 - 01:09:38

You know what?

SPEAKER_01 01:09:38 - 01:09:39

He, he took no day off.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:40 - 01:09:43

And I don't mean in, in the physical sense of having a day off.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:43 - 01:09:48

I mean, every single day that he stepped on that training pitch, he wanted to win.

SPEAKER_01 01:09:49 - 01:10:04

Whether it was at the, you know, the, the keep ball game, at the heading game, he inspired us every single day because he came in with that mentality and we all knew that that's, that that's what we have to cope with.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:04 - 01:10:05

That's the level that we have to reach.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:05 - 01:10:13

And, and that's why Keeney was who he was, because he was, he was a winner and he was hungry and he always wanted to win.

SPEAKER_02 01:10:14 - 01:10:18

Well, Dave, man, that's quite possibly the greatest five-a-side team I've seen assembled now.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:18 - 01:10:18

I know, it's not bad.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:19 - 01:10:20

I'll be on the bench.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:20 - 01:10:21

Me and you can be on the bench.

SPEAKER_02 01:10:22 - 01:10:22

I'll take that right now.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:23 - 01:10:23

I'll take that.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:23 - 01:10:24

I'll take that.

SPEAKER_02 01:10:24 - 01:10:25

Listen, thanks for being on the pod.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:25 - 01:10:26

Really appreciate your time.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:26 - 01:10:26

Pleasure, mate.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:26 - 01:10:26

Pleasure.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:26 - 01:10:27

Thanks for having me on.

SPEAKER_01 01:10:27 - 01:10:27

Talk about.
