SPEAKER_00 00:00 - 00:01

Harry, thanks for being here. How are you?

SPEAKER_00 00:02 - 00:03

I'm great. Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_00 00:03 - 00:04

Thanks for coming.

SPEAKER_01 00:04 - 00:06

That's my pleasure. Congratulations on the record.

SPEAKER_01 00:06 - 00:07

I really love listening to you.

SPEAKER_01 00:07 - 00:08

Thank you very much. Congratulations on the baby.

SPEAKER_01 00:09 - 00:10

Thank you very much. My own record.

SPEAKER_01 00:10 - 00:10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 00:11 - 00:12

Of my time on earth.

SPEAKER_01 00:13 - 00:23

So my understanding about the record is that it came from a place where you had sort of closed yourself off from life and a lot of experiences for a while.

SPEAKER_01 00:24 - 00:26

And you wanted to open yourself up to it.

SPEAKER_01 00:27 - 00:28

Help me understand that a bit better.

SPEAKER_01 00:28 - 00:31

Like what were you, what was going on that you were closing yourself off?

SPEAKER_00 00:31 - 00:46

Generally like my experience of kind of being like in the public domain is something that like obviously you learn a lot about kind of what you're comfortable with and what you're not comfortable with.

SPEAKER_00 00:46 - 00:58

And I think, I think when I started in the, in the band, we were kind of encouraged to like give a lot of ourselves away, you know, to kind of like let people get to know you.

SPEAKER_00 00:59 - 01:19

And, and, and, and I think kind of finishing that and then, and then when I started working on my own stuff, I was kind of, I felt like there were parts of that where I was kind of just kind of learning my own, what I was comfortable with and trying to like have kind of parts of my like personal life be more private.

SPEAKER_00 01:19 - 01:24

And, and, and, and, and, and, and kind of juggling a little bit with that.

SPEAKER_00 01:26 - 01:33

And, and I think the last time that we were touring and stuff, I think touring is quite an isolating experience.

SPEAKER_00 01:34 - 01:46

And on top of that, when we started touring, it was 2021, so it was kind of, it was kind of like still depths of, you know, pandemic, we were like one of the first tours to go back out.

SPEAKER_00 01:46 - 02:04

So I think that tour started in that way where it was like, I was really bubbled up even kind of within the tour and then staying on that tour, you know, we put an album out and it ended up being like two and a half years type time.

SPEAKER_00 02:04 - 02:14

It's just a long time to be in like a bubble where you're not really spending that much time, like in the world around you other than shows and hotels and stuff.

SPEAKER_00 02:15 - 02:24

And when I finished, I kind of went off and was spending a lot of time in Italy and was kind of like having this quiet time.

SPEAKER_00 02:24 - 02:34

And I was just feeling a lot of my life as I was kind of like craving, like quiet and kind of like private spaces.

SPEAKER_00 02:35 - 02:40

I was just feeling myself kind of like shut out a lot of the world, I think.

SPEAKER_00 02:40 - 02:59

And I think the last couple of years for me was about, you know, there's a lot of things that I think I got used to saying no to, like invites from friends and like maybe a weekend trip or like a birthday party or something.

SPEAKER_01 02:59 - 03:03

Kind of like I don't want to be, I could use the time by myself or I could use a little bit of recharge time.

SPEAKER_00 03:03 - 03:12

Yeah, I think I just got used to, you know, if I have a week at home, I don't want to go somewhere else for three days.

SPEAKER_00 03:12 - 03:14

I just want to stay home, you know.

SPEAKER_00 03:14 - 03:30

And I think when I got to Italy and was kind of out in this quiet place, I felt like, okay, if I'm going to spend all this time out here and I'm going to keep saying no to everything, I'm just going to like shut myself off from the world.

SPEAKER_00 03:30 - 03:31

You'd be a hermit.

SPEAKER_00 03:31 - 03:41

Yeah, and while parts of that sound appealing, I also like, I love people and I love like being in the world, you know.

SPEAKER_00 03:41 - 03:57

So it was kind of, I think for me, like there's been both the thing of like learning to set boundaries and stuff is a large part of that has also been learning when not to set boundaries and when to open up.

SPEAKER_00 03:58 - 04:03

So like, I think having, you know, like healthy boundaries doesn't mean just saying no to everything.

SPEAKER_00 04:04 - 04:09

I think it's being intentional with the things that you don't do and being intentional with the things that you do do.

SPEAKER_00 04:09 - 04:19

So, you know, there's a message in the album sleeve where I said like thanks to all the people who helped me know when to say no and when to say yes.

SPEAKER_00 04:19 - 04:25

And I think both of those have like greatly enriched my life.

SPEAKER_01 04:25 - 04:34

I appreciate everything you're saying there that when you were in the band, I didn't realize this until I was doing a load of research for this because I didn't know the band that well when you were on the go.

SPEAKER_01 04:34 - 04:39

So you did give a lot of yourself, you guys were on Twitter, you were like, you were talking, you were putting a lot out there.

SPEAKER_01 04:40 - 04:40

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 04:40 - 04:46

And then so you're trying to renegotiate how that is going to go now that you're a solo artist and also just as a human in the world.

SPEAKER_01 04:47 - 04:47

Right?

SPEAKER_01 04:47 - 05:03

Then you're, you have a lot of exposure around you, you're on the road a lot, there's a lot asked of you and it's also just exhausting to be on the road and it's exhausting to do what you do and you start to find yourself Salingering a little bit, like hiding away a little bit, boni-vering it a little bit, hiding away, you know.

SPEAKER_01 05:03 - 05:06

Then you start to realize, well, I need to figure out what to say yes to, I need to go out a little bit more.

SPEAKER_01 05:06 - 05:08

What I'm missing is the inflection point.

SPEAKER_01 05:08 - 05:18

Is there a moment, like, because when I was hearing you talk about it in the interviews you've done so far, it sounds like something went down or there was some sort of revelation caused by anything where you were like, I got to go out more?

SPEAKER_00 05:18 - 05:25

I was supposed to spend New Year's with some friends and I landed in Italy and was like, felt really unwell.

SPEAKER_00 05:25 - 05:34

So I just, like, went home and I woke up and I had this, like, kind of beautiful New Year's, like, by myself.

SPEAKER_00 05:35 - 05:50

But I think in spending a lot of time by myself, which I hadn't really done, I was also learning, like, I was, I was feeling the most alone I'd felt in a really long time.

SPEAKER_00 05:50 - 05:56

But in the most, like, beautiful way, like, I didn't feel lonely at all.

SPEAKER_00 05:57 - 06:02

And I think there's times, like, touring that can feel lonely.

SPEAKER_00 06:03 - 06:06

Like, obviously it's amazing and unbelievable.

SPEAKER_00 06:06 - 06:06

Sure, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 06:07 - 06:18

But I think that it's a confusing feeling to feel like I'm surrounded by so many people all the time, but there's a sense of loneliness in it.

SPEAKER_00 06:19 - 06:28

And it was really calming to feel like I'm alone in a way that feels like I want to be.

SPEAKER_00 06:28 - 06:32

And there's something, like, really powerful in that.

SPEAKER_00 06:32 - 06:46

And I think when, you know, when I was writing music, it felt like, like, it's only to fulfill myself because I'm doing it in a way that feels so removed from the idea of making an album.

SPEAKER_00 06:46 - 07:02

And I'm doing it so far away from what's playing on the radio and what's, like, happening around me that it felt like I think there's times when you're in it where you can feel like I'm in the studio because, you know, that's what comes next.

SPEAKER_00 07:02 - 07:05

And I'm doing a tour and then that's what happens after this.

SPEAKER_00 07:05 - 07:06

I'll make another record.

SPEAKER_00 07:06 - 07:18

And when I finished the last tour at that time, if I'd started making another record right then, I don't know that I would have known why I was doing it or what I wanted to say.

SPEAKER_00 07:18 - 07:19

I don't think I had that yet.

SPEAKER_00 07:20 - 07:32

So I think to be at home and write music and be writing it and kind of remind myself, like, oh, I'm doing this because this is what I do.

SPEAKER_00 07:32 - 07:40

And this is what I love doing rather than I'm doing this because it's time for me to make an album.

SPEAKER_01 07:41 - 07:42

And then you start going out and then you're like, okay, now.

SPEAKER_00 07:43 - 07:43

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 07:43 - 07:43

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 07:43 - 07:52

I think having, like, not being afraid to be by myself allowed me to.

SPEAKER_00 07:53 - 07:54

Be intentional.

SPEAKER_00 07:54 - 07:54

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 07:54 - 07:57

Be intentional about the things that I then wanted to do, you know.

SPEAKER_00 07:57 - 08:15

And I think I'd had a couple of things that had led to these other positive experiences that were, like, doors that were opening for me through people I'd met or, like, going to parties with people that I usually would have said no to.

SPEAKER_00 08:16 - 08:20

Where I was, like, there's a lot of, like, momentum in this that I could follow.

SPEAKER_00 08:21 - 08:35

And there was some element of, like, you know, being really happy in so many ways with, like, where I was.

SPEAKER_00 08:35 - 08:39

And I feel like I'm in a good place and I'm feeling good about being by myself.

SPEAKER_00 08:39 - 09:03

But also the idea of, like, as I think everyone does, I was like, I don't want to be in places in my life where I kind of dream about getting to this place and being in this place and then spend my time sitting in that place, looking at everyone else on Instagram, living their lives.

SPEAKER_01 09:03 - 09:04

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 09:04 - 09:05

It's hard on you, too, boy.

SPEAKER_01 09:05 - 09:10

It's hard on you, too, because you get noticed, right?

SPEAKER_01 09:10 - 09:13

Like, it's hard on you, too, because it's hard.

SPEAKER_01 09:14 - 09:19

And what I try to say to people when I talk about having this kind of conversation is that gratitude is assumed.

SPEAKER_01 09:19 - 09:21

Like, gratitude is assumed.

SPEAKER_01 09:21 - 09:28

And it's hard for you to go out and go out to a bar or go out to a club, I would think, you know.

SPEAKER_00 09:29 - 09:32

You can sit at home and go, like, it's hard for me to do these things.

SPEAKER_00 09:32 - 09:33

It's hard for me to be this.

SPEAKER_00 09:33 - 09:34

People are going to be looking at me, taking pictures, all that.

SPEAKER_00 09:34 - 09:41

But you can also go that, like, it being hard, and maybe not hard, but at times.

SPEAKER_00 09:41 - 09:42

Challenging.

SPEAKER_00 09:42 - 09:44

Uncomfortable or something.

SPEAKER_00 09:44 - 09:44

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 09:45 - 09:47

Can be a reason why you don't do them.

SPEAKER_00 09:47 - 09:48

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 09:48 - 09:51

Or you can choose for that to not be a reason.

SPEAKER_00 09:51 - 09:52

You can do them anyway, right?

SPEAKER_00 09:52 - 09:52

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 09:53 - 10:02

And I think when you shut out a lot of the things that are assumed can be negative, you also just un...

SPEAKER_00 10:04 - 10:08

consciously shut out a ton of positive things, you know.

SPEAKER_00 10:08 - 10:19

So if you go, it can be hard to go to a bar and, like, hang out with friends because there's maybe people who would act this way.

SPEAKER_00 10:20 - 10:20

Like...

SPEAKER_00 10:20 - 10:20

This is for you.

SPEAKER_00 10:21 - 10:39

This is for you.

SPEAKER_00 10:39 - 10:42

I don't want to shut myself off from this world.

SPEAKER_00 10:42 - 10:44

Like, I love people.

SPEAKER_00 10:44 - 10:46

You know, I love being social sometimes.

SPEAKER_00 10:47 - 10:48

Not always, but sometimes.

SPEAKER_00 10:48 - 10:59

And I think accepting that you shut yourself off from both when you shut yourself off from the negative is just...

SPEAKER_00 10:59 - 11:04

allow some space that, like, both things are okay, you know.

SPEAKER_00 11:04 - 11:09

And I want to allow the positivity into my life, you know, so...

SPEAKER_01 11:09 - 11:09

Good on you.

SPEAKER_00 11:09 - 11:10

That's good, Brian, you know.

SPEAKER_01 11:10 - 11:11

A lot of people don't.

SPEAKER_01 11:11 - 11:17

A lot of people would stay home and, you know, wear the shoeboxes on the feet and, you know, never go out again, right?

SPEAKER_01 11:18 - 11:19

I hear it in the music, too.

SPEAKER_01 11:19 - 11:20

Like, I hear...

SPEAKER_01 11:20 - 11:21

I assume you're going to clubs.

SPEAKER_01 11:21 - 11:23

I assume you were going out dancing and stuff like that.

SPEAKER_00 11:23 - 11:23

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 11:23 - 11:23

Bit of that?

SPEAKER_01 11:24 - 11:24

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 11:24 - 11:26

I can hear that in the music.

SPEAKER_01 11:26 - 11:34

I can hear an effort towards collective transcendence is the phrase that I would use from what I'm hearing on the record.

SPEAKER_01 11:34 - 11:35

Great phrase.

SPEAKER_01 11:35 - 11:35

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01 11:35 - 11:36

I might use that.

SPEAKER_01 11:36 - 11:38

It took 10% of net, though, please.

SPEAKER_01 11:53 - 11:57

My guess is that in some dance clubs or at some shows...

SPEAKER_01 11:57 - 11:59

I know you went to see LCD sound system a bunch of times.

SPEAKER_01 11:59 - 12:03

I'm guessing you went to see Jamie Ex-Ax a couple of times because he's opening the gigs for you.

SPEAKER_01 12:04 - 12:09

I'm guessing when you were in Berlin, you went to clubs, the big, wicked Berlin clubs there.

SPEAKER_01 12:10 - 12:25

I'm guessing you had that experience of having that sort of transcendence of sort of losing yourself to a pulse and to a bass note, to a drum, to the people around you.

SPEAKER_01 12:25 - 12:25

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 12:25 - 12:29

And that's what you were sort of reaching towards in this music.

SPEAKER_01 12:29 - 12:30

Am I onto something?

SPEAKER_00 12:30 - 12:31

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 12:31 - 12:49

I think the thing that is really beautiful about a lot of those experiences is that, you know, especially with someone like Jamie or, you know, like some of the DJs that are playing in like some of those clubs.

SPEAKER_00 12:49 - 12:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 12:49 - 13:01

Is I think while there's some similarity, I think the experience that they're, like their job is so in service of a communal experience.

SPEAKER_00 13:02 - 13:05

That I think there's, it's what?

SPEAKER_00 13:05 - 13:05

Very honest.

SPEAKER_00 13:05 - 13:06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 13:06 - 13:07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 13:07 - 13:18

I think it's, there's like probably a lot less ego than there is for, you know, when I think about me being on stage where it's kind of like, I'm here and, you know.

SPEAKER_00 13:18 - 13:19

It's the hairstyle show.

SPEAKER_00 13:19 - 13:19

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 13:20 - 13:20

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 13:20 - 13:20

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 13:20 - 13:29

And I think I really love how for the audience that stuff is, you know.

SPEAKER_00 13:29 - 13:43

And I think it's like a real gift that they give to people to have, it kind of like recalibrated my understanding of what someone in the audience deserves, I think.

SPEAKER_00 13:43 - 13:44

Deserves.

SPEAKER_00 13:44 - 13:44

Deserves.

SPEAKER_01 13:45 - 13:46

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 13:46 - 13:51

Because they show up being so generous with their emotions and their energy.

SPEAKER_00 13:51 - 14:13

And I think to kind of recalibrate the idea of like, it's not, it's not really about me, you know, and being able to be a true audience member and have my own experience and the person supplying the soundtrack to that is kind of giving me this gift.

SPEAKER_00 14:13 - 14:24

But, you know, clubs like that, it's a lot of people having a collective experience, but it's a lot of people having their own individual experience.

SPEAKER_00 14:25 - 14:39

And I think allowing for that is a lot about what this record feels like to me is that I don't want it to be like, I want you to hear all about what I've been experiencing.

SPEAKER_00 14:39 - 14:49

You know, I want, my hope is that it feels like I'm telling you that experiencing these things are amazing.

SPEAKER_01 14:49 - 14:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 14:49 - 14:51

You should experience those also.

SPEAKER_01 14:51 - 14:58

I'll tell you where I hear that is on, by the way, there's an irony in all of this that I'm just waiting for people on the internet who are going to point this out.

SPEAKER_01 14:58 - 14:58

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 14:58 - 15:00

I have never been to a club in my entire life.

SPEAKER_01 15:01 - 15:01

Okay.

SPEAKER_01 15:01 - 15:04

And I got, I said that to you, was it, does it Dua Lipa?

SPEAKER_01 15:04 - 15:05

I said it to Dua Lipa.

SPEAKER_01 15:05 - 15:06

And she went, what?

SPEAKER_01 15:07 - 15:10

So I'll put that out there that I have not, I have not gone to like a club club.

SPEAKER_01 15:10 - 15:11

It's fun.

SPEAKER_01 15:11 - 15:12

Is it all right?

SPEAKER_01 15:12 - 15:18

Like, I'm a pubby, I play sessions in traditional music and sing songs and stuff like that.

SPEAKER_01 15:18 - 15:19

But like, it's fun, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01 15:20 - 15:20

Yeah, it's fun.

SPEAKER_00 15:20 - 15:35

I think there's a, I think there's an element that, you know, feels, you know, it's fun to, you know, you can go out and you can get loose or whatever your tipple is and do your thing.

SPEAKER_01 15:35 - 15:36

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 15:36 - 16:02

But I think underneath that, like the DNA of these places is so much about this community feel of like safety and like loving each other and like being a safe space for people to be whoever they want and just have an experience that belongs to them, you know?

SPEAKER_00 16:02 - 16:11

And they can do that in a place that is where they're just surrounded by love and everyone is there for the same thing.

SPEAKER_00 16:11 - 16:18

And I think that's really, there is an element of that that is like very like spiritual, you know?

SPEAKER_00 16:18 - 16:33

Because I think for me, like when I was watching like LCD, for example, I'm kind of watching how James is on stage and feeling like, oh, he's so immersed in what he's doing.

SPEAKER_00 16:34 - 16:37

Watching that is like the joy that I get from it.

SPEAKER_00 16:37 - 16:41

It's like watching someone who's so enjoying himself.

SPEAKER_00 16:41 - 16:51

And I think it was a big thing to, for me to feel like that's how I want to feel on stage and how I feel in the middle of the dance floor is how I want to feel on stage.

SPEAKER_00 16:51 - 16:53

Feeling like that immersed in it.

SPEAKER_01 16:53 - 16:56

So I heard that on the Are You Listening Yet song.

SPEAKER_00 16:56 - 16:56

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 16:56 - 16:58

Which I think is like the thesis of the record in a lot of ways.

SPEAKER_01 16:58 - 17:06

Because I heard so much about like, I'm going to paraphrase your lyrics to you, which is always so complimentary and not risky at all for me.

SPEAKER_01 17:06 - 17:06

I can't.

SPEAKER_01 17:06 - 17:07

Yeah, it's a very normal thing to do.

SPEAKER_01 17:08 - 17:08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 17:08 - 17:11

Like, you're, these things are all great.

SPEAKER_01 17:11 - 17:12

Therapy's wonderful.

SPEAKER_01 17:12 - 17:12

It's good for you.

SPEAKER_01 17:13 - 17:13

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01 17:14 - 17:16

Looking after yourself is good.

SPEAKER_01 17:16 - 17:17

You got mantras.

SPEAKER_01 17:17 - 17:18

You got all these things you're going to do.

SPEAKER_01 17:18 - 17:18

You're looking after your head.

SPEAKER_01 17:18 - 17:19

You're looking after your heart.

SPEAKER_01 17:20 - 17:27

But when you are in a set of like collective transcendence, when you are able to completely lose yourself.

SPEAKER_01 17:27 - 17:31

And in this case, it sounds like, you know, it was for you at a dance club and you're able to, you know, you're able to lose that.

SPEAKER_01 17:32 - 17:34

You're not just saying that like, I got something out of this.

SPEAKER_01 17:34 - 17:38

You're saying to people in some ways, like, this is excellent for you.

SPEAKER_01 17:38 - 17:41

There's something beautiful, spiritually nurturing for you.

SPEAKER_01 17:41 - 17:44

The line is, it's in the chorus.

SPEAKER_01 17:44 - 17:47

Like, if it's not your head or your heart, but it's, is that what it is?

SPEAKER_00 17:48 - 17:50

It's between your head and heart and somewhere else.

SPEAKER_01 17:50 - 17:51

And somewhere else.

SPEAKER_00 17:51 - 17:51

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 17:51 - 17:54

Somewhere else meaning like probably the spirit or probably like that.

SPEAKER_01 17:55 - 17:57

When did you first have that experience?

SPEAKER_01 17:58 - 18:03

When do you remember first having the experience of being in a club like that and feeling like I lost myself?

SPEAKER_01 18:03 - 18:04

Because your life was manicured, man.

SPEAKER_01 18:04 - 18:05

Your life was controlled.

SPEAKER_01 18:06 - 18:06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 18:06 - 18:09

And your life was also a little, with a lot of solitude in it.

SPEAKER_01 18:09 - 18:13

When do you first remember having that experience of completely losing yourself from that?

SPEAKER_00 18:13 - 18:20

I've always like, you know, I've liked dancing and liked going out in that way.

SPEAKER_00 18:20 - 18:31

I think I'd been to a couple of like house parties and stuff a couple of years ago and was having like a bit more of, having a few more experiences with like electronic music.

SPEAKER_00 18:31 - 18:34

And like really starting to enjoy that a lot more.

SPEAKER_00 18:36 - 18:43

And I really liked the like melodic aspect and the kind of meditative aspect of it.

SPEAKER_00 18:43 - 18:55

And I think I'd been in a couple of situations where, you know, being on like a dance floor and being a free version of myself.

SPEAKER_00 18:55 - 19:13

And also being aware of like people around with like phones and cameras and stuff and just not quite like letting loose and letting go as much as I think I felt like was available to me in a way.

SPEAKER_00 19:13 - 19:20

And I think I went to Berlin last, I started going to Berlin like beginning of last year.

SPEAKER_00 19:20 - 19:36

And I was in a, in a dance club and had this experience where like it's so baked in as part of Berlin culture that like everyone deserves to go dancing and be free.

SPEAKER_00 19:36 - 19:40

And, you know, if you're a doctor, you should be able to let go.

SPEAKER_00 19:40 - 19:44

And if you're a politician, you should be allowed to let go.

SPEAKER_00 19:58 - 20:14

And I like had my hands up and I was kind of just like breathing and I closed my eyes and I remember the feeling.

SPEAKER_00 20:14 - 20:23

Like, oh, I'm no longer like scanning the room to see if anyone's like, you know, filming or anything, just because no one needs to see that.

SPEAKER_00 20:24 - 20:28

And I just felt like, oh, I'm just on my own right now.

SPEAKER_00 20:28 - 20:29

And I feel so free.

SPEAKER_00 20:30 - 20:32

And I hadn't felt that free.

SPEAKER_00 20:33 - 20:35

And it was really emotional.

SPEAKER_00 20:35 - 20:48

I just remember being there in this kind of like trance state in the music and like feeling tears roll down my face and feel like, wow, this is so.

SPEAKER_00 20:49 - 21:04

It's like such an amazing thing to like stand in the middle of like strangers and have this like beautiful experience and look around and see all these other people having their own version of that experience.

SPEAKER_00 21:04 - 21:14

And it just became something that was like, I felt how much that affected me for like weeks after that.

SPEAKER_00 21:15 - 21:31

Like I felt this real afterglow of like just a really big shift in like, oh, I, I, there's something there for me, you know, that I, that I want to experience again.

SPEAKER_00 21:31 - 21:43

And there's, there's something in that state of freedom that I think is a really interesting thing to explore for me, like as a musician as well.

SPEAKER_00 21:45 - 21:45

Beautiful.

SPEAKER_00 21:45 - 21:46

And you want to give that to the audience.

SPEAKER_01 21:46 - 21:47

You want to give that to the audience.

SPEAKER_00 21:48 - 21:48

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 21:48 - 21:48

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 21:48 - 21:48

That's what you have.

SPEAKER_00 21:49 - 21:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 21:49 - 22:02

I think a lot of, a lot of the kind of like diary entry kind of anecdotes of, of the last few records, it's, it's very much kind of,

SPEAKER_00 22:04 - 22:13

like, if it's a rollercoaster, it's like, I'm sat in the front seat and the audience is sat behind me and I'm like, come with me and I'll show you how this rollercoaster feels.

SPEAKER_00 22:14 - 22:14

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 22:14 - 22:15

You know, like watch me have a great time.

SPEAKER_00 22:15 - 22:16

Let me entertain you.

SPEAKER_00 22:16 - 22:17

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 22:17 - 22:26

And I think with this record, what I hope and what I hear when I listen to it is like, I want the listener to be in the front seat actually.

SPEAKER_00 22:26 - 22:31

And I'm in the seat behind you and I'm like, you know, maybe I have my hand on your shoulder.

SPEAKER_00 22:31 - 22:32

I'm like with you.

SPEAKER_00 22:32 - 22:33

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 22:33 - 22:35

But it's about you having your own experiences.

SPEAKER_00 22:35 - 22:38

It's not about, it's not really about me.

SPEAKER_00 22:38 - 22:40

It's not really about what I'm doing.

SPEAKER_00 22:40 - 22:42

It's not really about what clubs I'm going to.

SPEAKER_00 22:42 - 22:46

It's not really about who I'm hanging out with or where I'm going.

SPEAKER_00 22:47 - 22:57

It's like, it's me kind of saying, experiencing life in this way is amazing and I encourage you to also go do that for yourself.

SPEAKER_01 22:57 - 22:57

Beautiful.

SPEAKER_00 22:57 - 22:58

I think.

SPEAKER_01 22:58 - 23:01

I have a question about one of the other songs on the record.

SPEAKER_01 23:02 - 23:02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 23:02 - 23:07

It's a shorter song and I'm a bit anxious or a bit sensitive about asking you about it.

SPEAKER_01 23:07 - 23:11

So I figure what I do is I just put the boat in the water and sort of let you row it wherever you want.

SPEAKER_01 23:11 - 23:11

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 23:11 - 23:13

Can you talk to me about Paint by Numbers?

SPEAKER_00 23:13 - 23:13

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 23:13 - 23:19

It's like one of my favorite things.

SPEAKER_00 23:19 - 23:20

It comes out of nowhere on the record.

SPEAKER_00 23:21 - 23:21

Yeah, it does.

SPEAKER_00 23:21 - 23:25

So originally Paint by Numbers was like track one of the album.

SPEAKER_00 23:25 - 23:29

And at that time, the album was very different.

SPEAKER_00 23:29 - 23:32

It was like sonically sounding very different.

SPEAKER_00 23:32 - 23:36

And it was very, it was like very introspective.

SPEAKER_00 23:36 - 23:49

I think I was really starting to feel like, you know, I don't know, you know, I think I loved the idea of opening the album with, oh, what a gift it is to be noticed, but it's nothing to do with me.

SPEAKER_00 23:49 - 23:53

I just loved, I was like so dedicated to that being the opening line.

SPEAKER_01 23:54 - 23:56

Oh, what a gift it is to be noticed, but it's nothing to do with me.

SPEAKER_00 23:56 - 23:56

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 23:56 - 23:57

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 23:57 - 24:08

I felt so like powerful in a lot of ways to be able to acknowledge that it's not really about me.

SPEAKER_01 24:08 - 24:09

What's the song about?

SPEAKER_01 24:09 - 24:10

Like I was trying to figure out who you were.

SPEAKER_00 24:10 - 24:10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 24:11 - 24:13

Of course, you can imagine my, I heard the record once.

SPEAKER_01 24:13 - 24:16

And I'm knowing everything that you've gone through over the past couple of years.

SPEAKER_01 24:17 - 24:21

And I'm going, I'm searching for connections here.

SPEAKER_00 24:21 - 24:21

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 24:21 - 24:21

You know?

SPEAKER_00 24:22 - 24:22

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 24:22 - 24:22

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 24:23 - 24:23

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 24:23 - 24:31

Yeah, I think so the, I mean, the opening, the whole opening of the song is, oh, what a gift it is to be noticed, but it's nothing to do with me.

SPEAKER_00 24:31 - 24:38

You've got to wonder if there's a reason to believe it's a lifetime of learning to paint by numbers and watching the colors run.

SPEAKER_00 24:38 - 24:38

And I think.

SPEAKER_01 24:39 - 24:41

And what's the line about American children?

SPEAKER_00 24:41 - 24:43

Like, I got it here.

SPEAKER_00 24:43 - 24:44

Hold on, I got it.

SPEAKER_00 24:44 - 24:46

Hold in the way of the American children whose hearts you break.

SPEAKER_01 24:47 - 24:49

What's the, what's this, where does this, where does this song come from now?

SPEAKER_00 24:49 - 24:56

I'd had this relationship with like my own kind of like image.

SPEAKER_00 24:56 - 25:14

And I think the idea of me that I think other people have and had, I think where, I think I had like an expectation of myself to live up to being this kind of projected version of me.

SPEAKER_00 25:14 - 25:17

Good and, and, and, and happy and, and perfect.

SPEAKER_00 25:18 - 25:19

Yeah, and just like perfect.

SPEAKER_00 25:19 - 25:22

And it was supposed to be this thing, you know?

SPEAKER_00 25:22 - 25:30

And, and I think that can be part of what is difficult when you know yourself, you know?

SPEAKER_00 25:30 - 25:40

You're like, well, the version that maybe these people think I am, you know, there's parts of that, that I think I am.

SPEAKER_00 25:40 - 25:47

And then there's also like parts of, like anyone has parts of you that you dislike about yourself.

SPEAKER_00 25:47 - 25:57

And I think kind of learning to like accept that and I think being in the struggle of there's this perfect version that you're trying to fulfill.

SPEAKER_00 25:59 - 26:09

And by doing that, I think feeling like you, it's really easy to fall short when the version that you're, the standard you're holding yourself to is this like perfect person.

SPEAKER_00 26:09 - 26:10

It's impossible.

SPEAKER_01 26:10 - 26:15

Yeah, you were holding yourself up to a standard of flawlessness.

SPEAKER_01 26:15 - 26:16

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 26:16 - 26:21

And I think, I think with, you know, especially with like social media and everything.

SPEAKER_01 26:21 - 26:21

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 26:22 - 26:28

You're seeing this like version of yourself that other people see reflected back at you all the time.

SPEAKER_00 26:28 - 26:29

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00 26:29 - 26:38

And I think acknowledging that that can influence your thoughts about yourself as it does with everyone.

SPEAKER_00 26:38 - 26:39

It's not just a me thing.

SPEAKER_00 26:40 - 26:44

It's kind of like acknowledging that it's not always going to be perfect.

SPEAKER_00 26:44 - 26:46

You know, it's a lifetime of learning to paint by numbers.

SPEAKER_00 26:46 - 26:47

I'm watching the colors run.

SPEAKER_00 26:48 - 26:54

Like you can, you can try and paint inside the lines, but it's like life just doesn't work that way, you know?

SPEAKER_00 26:54 - 27:06

And the next line of American children whose hearts you break and then it says, you know, I'm not even 33, a little self-compassion and a life within your means.

SPEAKER_00 27:06 - 27:12

It's like, I'm still figuring a bunch of stuff out.

SPEAKER_01 27:12 - 27:12

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 27:13 - 27:18

And it's okay to like have a little self-compassion around making mistakes.

SPEAKER_00 27:19 - 27:20

You know, like everyone does that.

SPEAKER_00 27:20 - 27:50

And I think for a long time I struggled to admit that, like I struggled to admit when I'd made a mistake because it was like the reward system when you fulfill the expectation that people have of you is so loud and so shiny, you know, that it gets hard to differentiate when that's a good thing, when that becomes like an unhealthy thing.

SPEAKER_00 27:50 - 27:52

That's just a natural way of living your life, is it?

SPEAKER_00 27:52 - 28:08

So I think for me, you know, a large part of the last couple of years has just been about like honestly like learning to like myself like away from having so much of my value baked into like whether other people are enjoying me or not.

SPEAKER_00 28:08 - 28:25

And I think like learning like the fears and like feelings aren't facts and like, you know, you can have a feeling about yourself and taking the time to be able to like see what that is and see where that comes from.

SPEAKER_00 28:25 - 28:38

And the knowledge of where that comes from gives you a lot of power in terms of, you know, if you don't, if you don't feel great about yourself and someone else tells you that they think you're terrible.

SPEAKER_00 28:38 - 28:43

It's like the claw is in and they are like, it is ripping you.

SPEAKER_00 28:43 - 28:51

Whereas if you have like a somewhat solid sense of self and someone says that you're awful, you're like, okay, I'm sorry you felt that way though, man.

SPEAKER_01 28:52 - 28:56

Like you're like, you know, you're like a very famous, well-loved person.

SPEAKER_01 28:56 - 28:59

It is meaningful to me that you felt that way.

SPEAKER_00 28:59 - 29:00

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00 29:00 - 29:05

I mean, I think, I think it's like, it's like such a huge part of the human experience.

SPEAKER_00 29:06 - 29:09

I think it's not, I'm not trying to like complain about it.

SPEAKER_00 29:09 - 29:10

No, no, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_00 29:10 - 29:10

I know, I know, I know.

SPEAKER_01 29:11 - 29:13

I think it's like moving that, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01 29:13 - 29:14

That no one's exempt from it.

SPEAKER_01 29:14 - 29:14

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00 29:15 - 29:22

Yeah, I think it's like everyone's like raw pieces are the same, you know, and, and in different ways.

SPEAKER_00 29:23 - 29:47

But we're all like vulnerable beings, you know, and I think taking the time away from like working and the loud like distractions of things that are perfect kind of dopamine hits of like, you know, there's maybe this piece of my sense of self that would maybe at some point be healthy for me to look at.

SPEAKER_00 29:47 - 29:51

And then it's like, you did this thing and everyone thinks it's great.

SPEAKER_00 29:51 - 29:52

And you're like, great.

SPEAKER_00 29:52 - 29:53

You won album of the year.

SPEAKER_01 29:53 - 29:55

You won album of the year, you know, pretty good.

SPEAKER_00 29:56 - 29:56

Thanks.

SPEAKER_00 29:57 - 29:57

You know.

SPEAKER_00 29:58 - 30:14

So I think just, I think like having time to like sit at home and get, you know, be bored and like being bored is part of it.

SPEAKER_00 30:14 - 30:16

Like it's all okay.

SPEAKER_00 30:16 - 30:17

Like being bored isn't a bad thing.

SPEAKER_00 30:18 - 30:19

Being this thing isn't a bad thing.

SPEAKER_00 30:19 - 30:21

Being afraid isn't a bad thing.

SPEAKER_00 30:21 - 30:50

I think just having time to like really look at the experiences I was having and really look at the emotions I was feeling and kind of be able to lean into them instead of be afraid of them has been something that kind of allows me, I think, to be here ready to put music out feeling like, oh, I'm in such a healthier place than I was last time I did this, that, um, it just makes me like excited.

SPEAKER_01 30:50 - 30:52

I wanted to ask you about the Pope.

SPEAKER_00 30:53 - 30:53

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 30:54 - 30:58

So I liked the story you told that you went, you were getting a hair, you were getting a haircut.

SPEAKER_00 30:59 - 30:59

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 30:59 - 31:03

And your barber says, uh, happy as papum.

SPEAKER_01 31:03 - 31:04

Happy as papum, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 31:04 - 31:05

That we have a new Pope.

SPEAKER_01 31:05 - 31:10

And you, you run out into, I guess St. Peter's Square is what it's called.

SPEAKER_00 31:10 - 31:10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 31:11 - 31:12

Into the Vatican.

SPEAKER_01 31:13 - 31:17

And there's, I let him finish and then, and then I went.

SPEAKER_01 31:17 - 31:19

And then there's, you let him finish, you got the, he finished the haircut?

SPEAKER_01 31:19 - 31:20

I let him finish, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 31:20 - 31:20

Okay, good.

SPEAKER_01 31:20 - 31:23

And then you said, okay, now you can go look at the Pope.

SPEAKER_01 31:23 - 31:25

So you went out and you were there with your hat.

SPEAKER_01 31:26 - 31:31

I think the, the techno is my boyfriend hat and your sunglasses on, uh, watching the Pope.

SPEAKER_01 31:31 - 31:40

And I, I get that that's a funny, great story and I, I enjoyed it, but I want to know if you felt anything in that moment.

SPEAKER_01 31:40 - 31:47

Like, I want to know when you're watching, I don't know, I don't know your spiritual background and it's actually none of my business, but, but.

SPEAKER_01 31:47 - 31:48

No, it's not.

SPEAKER_01 31:50 - 31:51

But I got some guesses.

SPEAKER_01 31:51 - 31:51

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 31:51 - 31:53

So you raise one finger if I get it right.

SPEAKER_01 31:54 - 32:06

But I want to know, regardless of your spiritual background and what your spirituality is now, I imagine seeing the devotion and adoration from the people around you and watching that, watching the Pope come out.

SPEAKER_01 32:06 - 32:08

I wonder if you felt, what you felt in those moments.

SPEAKER_00 32:08 - 32:23

I think what I found really interesting was like, it's the same, in all the ways that it's different, there are similarities with like, live music and stuff, you know?

SPEAKER_00 32:23 - 32:26

Like, I get that they're obviously incredibly different.

SPEAKER_00 32:26 - 32:26

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 32:26 - 32:27

This is not John Lennon.

SPEAKER_01 32:27 - 32:27

No.

SPEAKER_00 32:28 - 32:28

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 32:28 - 32:28

No, I understand.

SPEAKER_01 32:29 - 32:29

I'll say it for you.

SPEAKER_00 32:29 - 32:29

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 32:29 - 32:30

Okay.

SPEAKER_00 32:30 - 32:30

This is not that.

SPEAKER_00 32:31 - 32:31

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 32:31 - 32:31

I understand.

SPEAKER_00 32:31 - 32:31

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 32:32 - 32:33

It's like buzzwords.

SPEAKER_00 32:33 - 32:33

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 32:33 - 32:33

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 32:33 - 32:35

But I heard it too.

SPEAKER_00 32:35 - 32:50

But it's this something about people gathering on behalf of something that is so much greater than what we can understand in some ways.

SPEAKER_00 32:50 - 32:50

Bless you.

SPEAKER_00 32:50 - 32:51

Bless you.

SPEAKER_00 32:51 - 32:52

It's okay.

SPEAKER_00 32:53 - 32:54

Bless you.

SPEAKER_00 32:54 - 32:55

Speaking of the Pope.

SPEAKER_01 32:55 - 32:56

Bless you.

SPEAKER_01 32:56 - 32:56

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 32:59 - 33:29

That I think is like, there is this inherent like vulnerability in people where we are all coming together and there's like this admittance of like, we're gathering to something that

SPEAKER_00 33:29 - 33:54

we can't see and we can't feel all the time and isn't necessarily as tangible as the things that are always around us that feels like there is vulnerability in like admitting that we all believe in something, whether that is music, whether that is religion, like whatever that is.

SPEAKER_00 33:54 - 34:14

And I think especially in a time where, you know, the kind of belief in the eternal and religion in that way is lesser than than it was in like previous times.

SPEAKER_00 34:14 - 34:22

I think having, we've lost like a lot of like ritual, I think in that, in that shift.

SPEAKER_00 34:22 - 34:30

And I think having these moments of like rituals of like coming together and believing in something and it doesn't have to be God.

SPEAKER_00 34:30 - 34:31

It doesn't have to be X.

SPEAKER_00 34:32 - 34:38

It can be music or the environment or nature or nature or whatever it is.

SPEAKER_00 34:38 - 34:45

There's something in like these times in which we're so isolated from each other and so divided.

SPEAKER_00 34:46 - 34:53

For me, it was like just very, like a beautiful thing to just see people come together.

SPEAKER_01 34:54 - 34:55

You recognize that in the moment.

SPEAKER_00 34:55 - 35:06

Yeah, I think like I got more from like looking at the crowds of strangers together than I, like I couldn't see the Pope, you know, it's like he was behind the thing.

SPEAKER_00 35:06 - 35:11

It was not like you had bad seats for the Pope, I had bad seats, I had really bad seats.

SPEAKER_00 35:11 - 35:24

I was behind like a tree and it's the human piece of it that I think is like the way that we gather that I think is the most beautiful thing.

SPEAKER_00 35:24 - 35:43

And I think in, you know, the threads between gathering in that way and gathering at like a show or a concert, it's like whatever side of it we're on, we're all kind of there for the same thing.

SPEAKER_00 35:43 - 35:57

You know, I think like the Pope is there for the same thing as the people who have come there for, I think as the artist on stage, I'm there for the same thing that the people in the audience have come there for.

SPEAKER_01 35:57 - 35:58

Collective transcendence.

SPEAKER_01 35:58 - 36:04

We're all trying to get to another sort of level, away from our heads and our hearts.

SPEAKER_01 36:05 - 36:05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 36:05 - 36:07

Away from, sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off.

SPEAKER_00 36:08 - 36:08

No.

SPEAKER_01 36:09 - 36:11

I'm just waiting for the YouTube comments.

SPEAKER_01 36:11 - 36:13

He was in the middle of something really good.

SPEAKER_00 36:14 - 36:14

That's my...

SPEAKER_00 36:14 - 36:16

I was really close to being profane.

SPEAKER_01 36:16 - 36:17

Yeah, yeah, I saved you from her.

SPEAKER_01 36:19 - 36:20

That's the things we're looking for.

SPEAKER_01 36:20 - 36:21

And I think you're right.

SPEAKER_01 36:21 - 36:35

I think when music is, when I've had experiences of music being transcendent, when I've had experiences of playing music with other people or singing with other people, it was actually in the north of London, north of England one time, in Sheffield, I went to a...

SPEAKER_01 36:35 - 36:37

And that's about two hours away from you in Cheshire.

SPEAKER_01 36:37 - 36:38

You ever go to Sheffield?

SPEAKER_01 36:38 - 36:39

You ever been up there?

SPEAKER_01 36:39 - 36:39

I did, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 36:39 - 36:41

My sister went to school in Sheffield.

SPEAKER_01 36:41 - 36:43

I went up there and I went to like a singing session up there.

SPEAKER_01 36:43 - 36:49

And it was all, you know, people from the community singing, like all in harmonies and like soul folk songs, stuff like that.

SPEAKER_01 36:49 - 36:52

And I remember feeling like pure transcendence in my world.

SPEAKER_01 36:52 - 36:55

I wasn't at a club, but still, it was pure transcendence.

SPEAKER_01 36:55 - 36:56

And I understand what you mean.

SPEAKER_01 36:56 - 36:57

It can feel...

SPEAKER_01 36:57 - 37:00

It feels like the same thing we're looking for from God.

SPEAKER_01 37:00 - 37:04

It does feel like the same thing we're looking for from anything we try to lose ourselves in.

SPEAKER_00 37:04 - 37:12

What's really interesting and a lot of what I found with this record is like having, you know, there's so many of those group experiences you can have.

SPEAKER_00 37:12 - 37:16

And then there's versions of that that I think you can have like by yourself.

SPEAKER_00 37:16 - 37:22

I think there's sometimes like in like songwriting, you can...

SPEAKER_00 37:22 - 37:28

There's this moment where there's a song that feels like it like writes itself, you know.

SPEAKER_00 37:28 - 37:32

And then you like read it back or listen to it back.

SPEAKER_00 37:32 - 37:43

And it's like, you know, there's been times more so on this record than ever where I've kind of like read something as I've written it.

SPEAKER_00 37:43 - 37:47

And I've like learned something about myself, like as I'm reading it back.

SPEAKER_00 37:48 - 37:48

What's the one?

SPEAKER_00 37:48 - 37:49

What's one on the record that you've read?

SPEAKER_00 37:49 - 37:58

Um, if all of the rest of the record was questioning to me, like Carla's song was the answer to the whole thing.

SPEAKER_00 37:58 - 38:01

And which is why it kind of felt like the perfect end.

SPEAKER_01 38:02 - 38:03

What was the question?

SPEAKER_01 38:03 - 38:03

What was the answer?

SPEAKER_00 38:03 - 38:17

So I think, I think a large part of the kind of questioning that like has naturally always come up for me when I've been touring and stuff is, you know, like what am I doing?

SPEAKER_00 38:17 - 38:28

And what am I kind of giving in a world where I'm kind of like making music and then I tour it and then I make another album and then I tour that.

SPEAKER_00 38:28 - 38:39

I think because the, because the kind of reward system feels so loud, it feels like, well, I'm getting so much.

SPEAKER_00 38:39 - 38:41

So what am I like giving, you know?

SPEAKER_00 38:41 - 38:58

And I think in those moments, I think, um, that's why I think when I finished the last tour, I felt like I don't know why, like, I can't make another record until I know why I'm making it.

SPEAKER_00 38:58 - 39:13

So I think while a lot of the rest of the stuff on the album is about me, um, searching for something of like, what, what is it that I'm looking for?

SPEAKER_00 39:13 - 39:16

And like, what is it that I really want in my life and all these things?

SPEAKER_00 39:17 - 39:34

I think the, the story around Carla's song was, uh, a friend of mine, um, her girlfriend, um, kind of revealed to, we were, we were waiting to go to this party together and she'd kind of said like, Oh, I just discovered, do you know this guy, Paul Simon?

SPEAKER_00 39:35 - 39:37

And we were all like, yes.

SPEAKER_00 39:37 - 39:37

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 39:38 - 39:38

I've heard of him.

SPEAKER_00 39:38 - 39:46

And, um, yeah, so she'd heard like 50 ways to live your lover on like a playlist that she'd been listening to and she was listening to it over and over again.

SPEAKER_00 39:47 - 39:56

And I had, um, I kind of had this like light bulb moment of just like, Oh, you don't know like Simon and Garfunkel.

SPEAKER_00 39:56 - 40:00

I like grew up on Simon and Garfunkel so much.

SPEAKER_00 40:00 - 40:08

I think it's like why I love harmony so much and why the use of harmony for me, like informs the melody so much.

SPEAKER_00 40:08 - 40:10

We've got a Cecilia in the pub you grew up in too.

SPEAKER_01 40:10 - 40:10

I remember.

SPEAKER_00 40:10 - 40:11

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 40:11 - 40:15

Um, and so, so I was like, can I play you something?

SPEAKER_00 40:15 - 40:21

So I kind of sat with her and I played her bridge over troubled water and she'd never heard it before.

SPEAKER_00 40:21 - 40:22

Oh man.

SPEAKER_00 40:22 - 40:27

And, and I kind of watched her listen to it.

SPEAKER_00 40:28 - 40:31

And it was like watching someone like discover magic.

SPEAKER_00 40:32 - 40:36

You know, it was like just watching someone see in Technicolor for the first time.

SPEAKER_00 40:36 - 40:42

And I felt like I listened to the song for the first time again.

SPEAKER_00 40:43 - 40:53

And I think I had this moment of like everyone who works like in or around music, I think it gets really easy to forget.

SPEAKER_00 40:53 - 41:01

But all of us have this moment with a song where you hear something that you know is going to be in your life forever.

SPEAKER_00 41:02 - 41:15

And that is why we want to work in music or like why anyone who works at a record label or a publishing company, they had a moment with a song where they were like, this song is going to be in my life forever.

SPEAKER_00 41:15 - 41:16

I've never heard anything like this.

SPEAKER_01 41:17 - 41:18

So what was the answer?

SPEAKER_01 41:18 - 41:19

What was the answer you got from that?

SPEAKER_00 41:19 - 41:25

Well, I think the answer was that of all of my questioning of like, why and why do I do this?

SPEAKER_00 41:25 - 41:36

It's like this feeling of someone hearing something is like reason enough to like be alive.

SPEAKER_00 41:37 - 41:39

Like that moment is so special.

SPEAKER_00 41:40 - 41:52

And I think it was the idea, you know, the chorus is, you know, it's all waiting there for you and finishes with me saying, you know, I know what you like, you can hear at any time.

SPEAKER_00 41:53 - 42:17

And I think the idea of me making music being like this investment towards this thing that is so much greater than me in the way that people will be listening to Bridge Over Troubled Water in however many years time, like way past any of us are.

SPEAKER_00 42:17 - 42:27

Alive, you know, and then kind of that is the gift of them kind of giving that song to people to hear.

SPEAKER_00 42:27 - 42:28

I think it's like somewhat comforting.

SPEAKER_00 42:28 - 42:44

It's comforting to me, but I hope it's also comforting to the audience that like it's not really about me, you know, and if I go away for a while, if I go away for two years, if I go away for 10 years, if whatever it is, it's not really about me.

SPEAKER_00 42:44 - 42:48

Like it's always about the music and it's always been about the music.

SPEAKER_00 42:48 - 43:08

And I think that to me has been like the greatest gift of what I've got out of this record is kind of rediscovering the rediscovering that because I think it can realizing that it's not really about you can be absolutely terrifying.

SPEAKER_00 43:09 - 43:14

Or if you let it, it can be incredibly liberating to just go, it's just not, you know.

SPEAKER_01 43:15 - 43:15

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 43:15 - 43:17

And I can understand how you needed to get there too.

SPEAKER_00 43:17 - 43:17

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 43:17 - 43:19

I can understand that it was about you.

SPEAKER_00 43:20 - 43:20

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 43:20 - 43:21

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00 43:21 - 43:23

You know, and I'm not being disrespectful like, you know, like it was.

SPEAKER_00 43:23 - 43:28

No, I think you're just, it's a world where there's a lot of people telling you that it is about you.

SPEAKER_00 43:28 - 43:28

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 43:29 - 43:29

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 43:29 - 43:43

So I think having the chance to reconnect with the fact that it's not is just like was something that I needed and it's something that like is still like giving to me, you know.

SPEAKER_01 43:43 - 43:46

You ever heard that live version of Bridge Over Trouble Water?

SPEAKER_01 43:46 - 43:47

They debut it at Carnegie Hall?

SPEAKER_01 43:48 - 43:49

I think so.

SPEAKER_01 43:49 - 43:49

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 43:49 - 43:51

I mean, I had that moment where I was listening.

SPEAKER_01 43:51 - 43:52

It's funny you mentioned that song.

SPEAKER_01 43:53 - 44:01

So like he says, I think Garfunkel says, this is a new song that we're trying out and it's Bridge Over Trouble Water.

SPEAKER_01 44:01 - 44:06

And I had this moment of like, oh my God, everybody in that room is hearing this for the first time right now.

SPEAKER_01 44:06 - 44:08

So, yeah, I mean.

SPEAKER_01 44:08 - 44:08

You know?

SPEAKER_01 44:09 - 44:09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 44:09 - 44:10

They just felt it.

SPEAKER_01 44:10 - 44:11

They didn't know it was an important song.

SPEAKER_01 44:11 - 44:13

They didn't know it had the history.

SPEAKER_01 44:13 - 44:15

They just got to feel it that way for the first time.

SPEAKER_01 44:15 - 44:15

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 44:15 - 44:22

So, I'll end by saying the same thing to you I said the last time I met you because I've been thinking a lot about it listening to this record.

SPEAKER_01 44:23 - 44:25

And I don't, well, you know what?

SPEAKER_01 44:25 - 44:31

That's a, that's a, that's a negative self-critic voice telling me to go up.

SPEAKER_01 44:31 - 44:34

It's like an Irish Catholic-ness trying to tell me to get ahead of what I'm about to say to you.

SPEAKER_01 44:34 - 44:34

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 44:35 - 44:35

I think.

SPEAKER_01 44:36 - 44:38

It's like giving a present and being like, you'll hate it.

SPEAKER_01 44:38 - 44:38

Don't worry.

SPEAKER_01 44:38 - 44:40

Yeah, because then I hope that you'll be like, if you don't like it, you can give it.

SPEAKER_01 44:40 - 44:41

Yeah, it's exactly like that.

SPEAKER_01 44:41 - 44:52

But I think you have an incredible ability to bring art into spaces that don't always reward it.

SPEAKER_01 44:52 - 45:05

To bring art to places, radios and TVs and a lot of different people's phones that the places that, the things that they went over to get would not necessarily be motivated by art always.

SPEAKER_01 45:05 - 45:09

And I always, I admire your dedication to that.

SPEAKER_01 45:09 - 45:10

I appreciate that.

SPEAKER_00 45:10 - 45:10

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01 45:11 - 45:12

I think you made a great record and I think you should be really proud of it.

SPEAKER_01 45:12 - 45:13

Thank you very much.

SPEAKER_00 45:13 - 45:14

Thanks for coming in or thanks for having me here.

SPEAKER_01 45:14 - 45:15

Thanks for, thanks for coming.

SPEAKER_00 45:16 - 45:16

God love you.

SPEAKER_00 45:16 - 45:17

Thank you so much.
