Building Teams and Player Mentality

The speaker elaborates on his philosophy of building a team, emphasizing the importance of collective spirit over individual brilliance and adapting to the modern player.

• It’s always difficult to play against his teams, regardless of their potential, because they are built as a unit.
• Emphasizes tactical work and strong mentality as crucial for a team’s performance, even if they don’t have the most potential.
• The approach to a game depends on whether the team is the “best one” (arrogant, show power) or not (cautious, hide problems, create balance).
• There isn’t a significant difference between past and present generations of players in terms of fundamental approach, but the context has changed.
• Communication methods (like podcasts) and media influence have evolved significantly.
• Coaches and managers’ roles have also evolved and are difficult to compare across different eras.
• Players are more individualistic now, with personal ambitions and surrounding support structures.
• The fundamental challenge is to transform these individuals into a cohesive team.
• Building a proper team requires connection between structures and players.
• Players are intelligent and can analyze situations, feel team strength and fragility.
• The goal is to make players feel compact and united despite complex club structures.
• The ideal is to create clarity, empathy, and a strong foundation for players.

• The pressure during these periods was immense, requiring near-perfect performance (e.g., winning with 98-100 points in the league).
• He enjoyed the fight and the intensity, especially when pushing to win under extreme circumstances.
• The pressure can be draining, leading to the decision to move on even when success is imminent.
• Mentions other significant rivalries: Benfica-Porto, Porto-Benfica, Man Utd-Liverpool, Chelsea-Arsenal, Lazio-Roma, Inter-Juve, Inter-Milan.
• Contrasts the intensity of Inter-Juve with the initial perception of Inter-Milan derby.

Pre-Match Routine

The speaker describes his pre-match routine, emphasizing a lack of superstition and a focus on letting players manage their own time before the game.

• Players generally know the starting lineup before he announces it due to the week’s training.
• The main work is done before match day; on match day, his role is to analyze and react to the game’s unpredictability.
• He is not superstitious and believes the pressure of the game is enough without adding superstitious anxieties.
• Prefers players to have their own space and time before the warm-up to feel comfortable and communicate amongst themselves.
• He does not like to be in the dressing room before the warm-up, especially at home.
• His role on match day is to be present for the players, play with them for 90 minutes, and be what the team needs.
• He does not have any significant, elaborate pre-match routines.
