Interview Key Points

Michael’s Connection to NASCAR

This section explores Michael’s deep-rooted passion for NASCAR, tracing its origins back to his childhood and family.

Family Memories and Cars: Michael’s father, a mechanic, instilled a love for cars and fast driving in the family, which naturally led to an interest in car racing.
Early Exposure to Racing: His father’s friend, a local racer, exposed the family to NASCAR, leading to childhood road trips to races at Darlington, Charlotte, and Rockingham.
Developing Appreciation for the Sport: The experience of attending races, the competitive nature of NASCAR, and the strategic elements of the sport (like drafting) captivated Michael.
Richard Petty Fan: Michael and his father were both big fans of legendary NASCAR driver Richard Petty.
Beyond “Just Left Turns”: He emphasizes that NASCAR is a sport requiring athletes with quick reactions, strategic thinking, and athleticism, challenging the common perception of it being a simple activity.
Giddiness and Excitement: Despite his initial desire for a quieter life post-basketball, Michael expresses immense excitement and a childlike joy when involved with NASCAR, often described as “giddy” by those who know him.
Nostalgic Lens: Watching NASCAR today brings back fond memories of family outings and childhood experiences.

This part of the interview delves into Michael’s inherent competitiveness, its origins, and how it manifests in various aspects of his life.

Enduring Competitiveness: Michael remains intensely competitive, a trait he claims to be “cursed” with, and it fuels his drive in everything he does.
Positive Manifestations: He views his competitive gene as a positive trait that keeps him young, thinking positively, and deeply engaged with his endeavors.
Everyday Competitions: His competitiveness extends to mundane activities, like trying to get dressed before his wife or optimizing his morning routine to get to the golf course.
Origins of Competitiveness: He believes his competitive drive stems from an “appetite to prove” as a child, which has transcended into all areas of his life.
Overcoming Humps: This trait helps him overcome challenges and evaluate success at each stage, enabling him to push past obstacles that might stop others.
“Wanting to Win Fast”: In the context of NASCAR, his mentality is to win quickly, though he acknowledges the need for patience and stages in the process, a lesson he learned from Denny Hamlin.

This section focuses on Michael’s intentional efforts to change the sport of NASCAR through legal action and his overarching goals.

Intentional Game Changer: Michael explicitly states that he intended to change the game of basketball and now the sport of NASCAR, particularly through a lawsuit.
Perceived Imbalance in NASCAR: Upon entering the sport, he observed that it was “lopsided,” with individuals putting on the show (drivers) not being fairly compensated or recognized compared to those at the top.
Desire for Fair Compensation and Recognition: He felt that drivers, like himself, who were a significant part of the “show,” deserved to share in the success and be “compensated fairly.”
Willingness to Take Risks: Michael was prepared for the consequences of the lawsuit, including being “kicked out of the sport” or losing the case, believing that the action would “wake up some people” to the injustices.
Long-Standing Support: He clarifies that his actions were not an attack but stemmed from a long period of being a fan and supporter of NASCAR.
Testifying in Court: Michael acknowledges the attention his decision to testify in court garnered. He was nervous about being in a courtroom but was “all in” and aggressively determined to win.
Convincing Partners: He aimed to convince his partners to stick with the fight, though some had reasons why they couldn’t.
“I Don’t Care, Even if I Lost, I Won”: This statement reflects his belief that raising awareness about the need for change was a victory in itself, regardless of the legal outcome.

This part discusses Michael’s physical limitations regarding racing and his perspective on the spotlight compared to his basketball career.

Physical Limitations: Michael cannot fit into a NASCAR car and has never driven one, expressing a wish that he could.
Desire vs. Talent: He admits that if he could drive, he would likely try to match the speed of professional drivers but would probably crash due to a lack of talent.
Passion for the Sport: Despite not being able to race, his love for NASCAR is genuine and he believes his passion can influence others to embrace the sport.
Quieter Life vs. Reality: While he initially sought a “quieter life” away from the basketball spotlight, his involvement in NASCAR has, at times, placed him back in the forefront, particularly due to the lawsuit.
Different Kind of Burden: He differentiates the “burden” of being a global basketball icon from the current demands of NASCAR. The basketball burden involved maintaining a specific public image and expectations, which he found exhausting.
NASCAR’s Burden is Different: While his NASCAR involvement has evolved due to public attention, it doesn’t carry the same overwhelming weight as his basketball career.
Keeps Him Vibrant: He finds his involvement in NASCAR invigorating, describing it as keeping him “vibrant” and “fired up.”
Missing Basketball: Michael admits to still having a “huge beast” of a desire to play basketball and would “love to do that” if he could.

This final section touches on Michael’s views on legacy, the concept of “GOAT,” and the stigma surrounding NASCAR.

No “One Great”: Michael rejects the notion of a single “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT), believing that athletes build upon the progress of those who came before them. He sees it as an unfair comparison to single out one individual.
Evolution of Sports: He emphasizes that athletes learn from and transcend previous generations, making it inaccurate to definitively label one person as superior.
NASCAR Stigma: Michael acknowledges that a stigma still exists around NASCAR racing.
Changing Perceptions: He believes this stigma is changing, particularly with generational shifts and NASCAR’s efforts to connect with younger and more diverse audiences.
Role in Change: Michael sees his involvement as a positive force in changing the perception of NASCAR, attracting new fans who might not have previously followed the sport, especially as his team is winning.
Winning and Identity: He believes his success and identity are intertwined with the perception and potential growth of NASCAR.
