SPEAKER_00 00:00 - 00:01

Let me just start with this.

SPEAKER_00 00:01 - 00:06

Number one, I can't believe, Michael, that we're here, and that we're here talking to you about NASCAR.

SPEAKER_00 00:07 - 00:07

NASCAR.

SPEAKER_00 00:08 - 00:11

So take us back why this sport means so much to you.

SPEAKER_00 00:11 - 00:12

Is it family memories?

SPEAKER_00 00:12 - 00:13

What is it?

SPEAKER_01 00:13 - 00:14

I think it's more family memories.

SPEAKER_01 00:14 - 00:19

My father, actually, you know, he was a diehard mechanic.

SPEAKER_01 00:19 - 00:21

He used to work on all the neighborhood cars.

SPEAKER_01 00:21 - 00:23

You know, he would fix our cars.

SPEAKER_01 00:24 - 00:26

We would never send our car to the service.

SPEAKER_01 00:26 - 00:27

He would figure out a way to fix it.

SPEAKER_01 00:27 - 00:31

So I think it gravitated into his love for cars.

SPEAKER_01 00:32 - 00:34

And he likes driving fast.

SPEAKER_01 00:34 - 00:35

My mom likes driving fast.

SPEAKER_01 00:36 - 00:37

So we kind of-

SPEAKER_00 00:37 - 00:38

Do you like driving fast, Michael?

SPEAKER_01 00:38 - 00:39

No, I never drive fast.

SPEAKER_00 00:39 - 00:41

I don't believe you, but go ahead, go ahead.

SPEAKER_01 00:41 - 00:47

But, you know, it kind of led us down the alley of getting involved in car racing.

SPEAKER_01 00:47 - 00:53

One of his best friends was Hoss Ellingson, who was from Wilmington, and he raced locally.

SPEAKER_01 00:53 - 00:57

He raced, I think he was in NASCAR at one particular time.

SPEAKER_01 00:57 - 01:01

And somehow my father just kind of got gravitated towards the sport.

SPEAKER_01 01:01 - 01:03

And he just drug us along.

SPEAKER_00 01:03 - 01:05

So did you go to NASCAR races as a kid?

SPEAKER_01 01:06 - 01:06

Yes. We drove-

SPEAKER_00 01:06 - 01:07

Tell me about that.

SPEAKER_01 01:07 - 01:12

We drove to Darlington, Charlotte, Rockingham, all the local places.

SPEAKER_01 01:12 - 01:15

We would leave early in the morning on Sunday morning.

SPEAKER_01 01:16 - 01:20

And then we'd spend the day and come back, you know, later after the race.

SPEAKER_01 01:20 - 01:25

And my brother and I started looking forward to going to those races, you know.

SPEAKER_01 01:26 - 01:28

And my mom would go.

SPEAKER_01 01:28 - 01:29

The whole family would go.

SPEAKER_01 01:29 - 01:31

And we'd pack it up and just go.

SPEAKER_01 01:31 - 01:35

We would always go where we can come and come right back.

SPEAKER_01 01:36 - 01:44

And I just, it got into my blood, you know, just seeing what, you know, how competitive NASCAR was.

SPEAKER_01 01:44 - 01:45

I was a big Richard Petty fan.

SPEAKER_01 01:46 - 01:48

My father was a big Richard Petty fan.

SPEAKER_01 02:04 - 02:05

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01 02:05 - 02:12

The sport as a whole from the, a lot of people look at NASCAR and you see them just making left turns the whole time.

SPEAKER_01 02:12 - 02:13

You know, it's a strategy.

SPEAKER_01 02:13 - 02:16

It's a lot of, I think it's a lot.

SPEAKER_01 02:16 - 02:16

They're athletes.

SPEAKER_01 02:17 - 02:17

They're great athletes.

SPEAKER_01 02:17 - 02:19

They have the quick, you know, reactions.

SPEAKER_01 02:20 - 02:23

They have to think real quick, going at 190 miles an hour.

SPEAKER_01 02:23 - 02:32

You know, their strategy to, to, you know, drafting and things like that, that I think people are going to learn as you, if you get involved in the sport.

SPEAKER_01 02:32 - 02:41

And to me, that was intriguing enough for me to kind of dive in and understand it from, from an athlete standpoint, you know, which I actually love.

SPEAKER_00 02:41 - 02:46

But the people that know you say, but you should see Michael when he's on the track.

SPEAKER_00 02:46 - 02:47

You should see Michael when he's in the pit.

SPEAKER_00 02:48 - 02:51

He's, I think the word was giddy, that he's like a little kid.

SPEAKER_00 02:51 - 02:53

Do you feel like that about this sport?

SPEAKER_01 02:53 - 02:53

I'm excited.

SPEAKER_01 02:54 - 02:57

I'm excited that, you know, I'm connected to this sport.

SPEAKER_01 02:57 - 03:04

You know, I feel like when I watch the sport, I watch it, you know, with the lens of my father, with my family.

SPEAKER_01 03:05 - 03:06

And that matters to me.

SPEAKER_01 03:06 - 03:11

I mean, that brings back a lot of things that we used to do, you know, when we were a kid.

SPEAKER_01 03:11 - 03:15

And the joy of seeing competition, right?

SPEAKER_01 03:15 - 03:17

I'm a very competitive person.

SPEAKER_00 03:17 - 03:17

Still?

SPEAKER_01 03:18 - 03:18

100%.

SPEAKER_01 03:18 - 03:19

Still?

SPEAKER_01 03:19 - 03:20

100%.

SPEAKER_01 03:20 - 03:20

Why?

SPEAKER_00 03:21 - 03:22

Because I thought you'd step back.

SPEAKER_00 03:22 - 03:23

You wanted a quieter life.

SPEAKER_01 03:24 - 03:25

I think I'm cursed.

SPEAKER_01 03:25 - 03:32

I'm cursed with this competitive gene that anything that I do is from a competitive lens, you know?

SPEAKER_01 03:32 - 03:37

And in some ways that keeps me young, that keeps me aggressively thinking positively.

SPEAKER_01 03:37 - 03:43

It helps me either understand everything that I'm involved, that I'm connected with.

SPEAKER_01 03:43 - 03:48

It has to be some competitive, you know, things to that, you know?

SPEAKER_01 03:48 - 03:54

If it's getting dressed, I got to get dressed before my wife gets dressed, or I got to get dressed in mature, you know, those types of things.

SPEAKER_01 03:54 - 03:55

I'm cursed.

SPEAKER_01 03:55 - 03:56

That's just the way I am.

SPEAKER_01 03:56 - 03:59

And I try to use it in the best positive way that I can.

SPEAKER_00 04:01 - 04:04

So Yvette's getting dressed, and you're like, I got to get dressed before she does?

SPEAKER_01 04:04 - 04:10

No, I got to get in the shower and get in the bathroom before she comes in so she doesn't slow down my time that I can get to the golf course in time.

SPEAKER_01 04:10 - 04:11

I got to drop the kids off.

SPEAKER_01 04:11 - 04:13

I got all the other things I got.

SPEAKER_00 04:13 - 04:14

I'm looking, I'm like, are you okay?

SPEAKER_00 04:15 - 04:15

Are you okay?

SPEAKER_00 04:16 - 04:17

Where do you think that comes from?

SPEAKER_00 04:18 - 04:18

I think that's funny.

SPEAKER_01 04:19 - 04:19

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 04:20 - 04:20

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01 04:20 - 04:31

I think that my appetite to prove as a kid created this competitive thing within me that has transcended and taken over everything that I do.

SPEAKER_01 04:31 - 04:36

And I think it's a good trait to have because some people don't have that trait.

SPEAKER_01 04:36 - 04:44

And some people get to the, you know, get right at the cusp of what success really means, and they can never get over that hump.

SPEAKER_01 04:44 - 04:49

And I think it helps you evaluate every stage of success.

SPEAKER_01 04:49 - 04:52

I mean, believe me, I've had my failures in terms of the stages.

SPEAKER_01 04:53 - 04:56

But once I get over it, it's infectious.

SPEAKER_01 04:56 - 05:00

It's that feeling of, you know, that you've accomplished something.

SPEAKER_01 05:00 - 05:01

I've gotten to that hill.

SPEAKER_01 05:01 - 05:04

It's a long road getting up that hill.

SPEAKER_01 05:04 - 05:10

And I think, you know, getting involved in NASCAR from the grassroots when Denny brought this to me.

SPEAKER_00 05:10 - 05:12

Yes, I want to talk to him about that.

SPEAKER_00 05:12 - 05:12

Yes.

SPEAKER_01 05:12 - 05:14

It was starting from scratch.

SPEAKER_01 05:16 - 05:19

And, you know, my mentality was, I want to win.

SPEAKER_01 05:19 - 05:20

I want to win.

SPEAKER_01 05:20 - 05:20

I want to win fast.

SPEAKER_01 05:21 - 05:22

I want to do it really fast.

SPEAKER_01 05:22 - 05:25

And he was the type of person to say, hey, slow down.

SPEAKER_01 05:25 - 05:26

There's stages to this.

SPEAKER_01 05:26 - 05:32

I say, I get that, you know, but, you know, I'm going to do everything in my power to try to speed up the process.

SPEAKER_01 05:34 - 05:43

And I think that every time you see me giddy down in the pits, it's because of we're doing it.

SPEAKER_01 05:43 - 05:44

We absolutely are doing it.

SPEAKER_01 05:44 - 05:49

We are starting to make a difference in a sport that no one thought we could make a difference in.

SPEAKER_00 05:49 - 05:52

Yeah, but it gives you a different kind of gear, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_01 05:52 - 05:52

It does.

SPEAKER_01 05:53 - 05:56

And it's infectious that you kind of pass it on to others, you know.

SPEAKER_01 05:57 - 05:59

And they start getting it.

SPEAKER_01 05:59 - 06:00

They start believing in you.

SPEAKER_01 06:00 - 06:08

They start feeling the energy that's been generated either by my involvement or our passion between me and Denny.

SPEAKER_01 06:08 - 06:14

And you can look themselves, they look themselves in the mirror and they can see, oh, we can do this.

SPEAKER_01 06:14 - 06:15

We could be a champion.

SPEAKER_01 06:16 - 06:17

We can win every weekend.

SPEAKER_01 06:17 - 06:20

We can compete with the top guys in this sport.

SPEAKER_01 06:20 - 06:22

And I think that's what you're starting to see.

SPEAKER_00 06:22 - 06:26

And when it doesn't go, the race doesn't go the way you want, how do you handle that?

SPEAKER_01 06:26 - 06:28

Oh, I take it as a lesson.

SPEAKER_01 06:28 - 06:29

We learn, you know.

SPEAKER_01 06:30 - 06:34

Any successful person has had to deal with failure at some point in time, you know.

SPEAKER_01 06:34 - 06:36

So we don't let it get us down.

SPEAKER_01 06:36 - 06:39

We figure out, okay, we've got to get ready to the next.

SPEAKER_01 06:40 - 06:40

Let's learn.

SPEAKER_01 06:40 - 06:42

Let's get back to the next one.

SPEAKER_01 06:42 - 06:44

Let's make a big difference for the next one.

SPEAKER_01 06:44 - 06:46

So, I mean, that is a part of my DNA.

SPEAKER_01 06:46 - 06:50

I do not like losing, but I'm not afraid to lose.

SPEAKER_01 06:50 - 06:51

I learn from losing.

SPEAKER_00 06:51 - 06:53

People say you certainly changed the game of basketball.

SPEAKER_00 06:54 - 06:57

Now they say with the lawsuit, you've changed the sport of NASCAR.

SPEAKER_00 06:57 - 06:58

Was that your intention?

SPEAKER_01 06:58 - 06:59

Yes.

SPEAKER_00 06:59 - 06:59

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 07:00 - 07:00

One hundred percent.

SPEAKER_00 07:01 - 07:01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 07:01 - 07:01

Tell me about that.

SPEAKER_01 07:02 - 07:08

Well, when I got into the sport, obviously, as I learned, it was a lot of things that I wasn't really happy about.

SPEAKER_00 07:09 - 07:09

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01 07:09 - 07:19

And I felt like looking at it from a sport, the sport was not set up for success long term for the individuals that's involved in the sport.

SPEAKER_01 07:19 - 07:22

Now, up top, yeah, you know, they can make a good living.

SPEAKER_00 07:22 - 07:23

Yeah, they were doing all right, yes.

SPEAKER_01 07:23 - 07:25

They were making a good living.

SPEAKER_01 07:25 - 07:37

And for the people that were putting on the show, that was, and I was a show, I was one of those persons that put on the show and always wanted to share in the gratitude of the success of the NBA or anything that I did.

SPEAKER_01 07:37 - 07:37

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01 07:37 - 07:40

When you look at NASCAR, I felt like it was lopsided.

SPEAKER_01 07:40 - 07:46

And the people that were putting on the show was not getting the type of recognition.

SPEAKER_00 07:47 - 07:48

Compensated fairly.

SPEAKER_01 07:48 - 07:48

Compensated fairly.

SPEAKER_01 07:49 - 07:53

And I didn't have a say-so initially because I had to get in an understanding and know.

SPEAKER_01 07:54 - 08:00

And once I did, you know, we got to an opportunity where, okay, we need some changes, you know.

SPEAKER_01 08:00 - 08:11

And even if I get kicked out of the sport, even if I lose the lawsuit, I'm going to wake up some people to understand what they are actually doing is wrong, you know.

SPEAKER_01 08:11 - 08:12

And I've been a fan.

SPEAKER_01 08:13 - 08:15

It's not like I just woke up and said, you know what?

SPEAKER_01 08:15 - 08:18

I'm going to go and I'm going to attack NASCAR.

SPEAKER_01 08:18 - 08:18

No.

SPEAKER_01 08:18 - 08:20

I've been involved in NASCAR.

SPEAKER_01 08:20 - 08:23

I've been supportive of NASCAR for a long period of time.

SPEAKER_01 08:23 - 08:23

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 08:24 - 08:26

But I was focused on what I was doing, which is basketball.

SPEAKER_01 08:26 - 08:29

Now, when I got into NASCAR, I can see how things were operating.

SPEAKER_01 08:30 - 08:30

It was lopsided.

SPEAKER_01 08:31 - 08:31

It was wrong.

SPEAKER_00 08:31 - 08:34

Yeah, but Michael Jordan took the stand.

SPEAKER_00 08:34 - 08:39

When I read that Michael Jordan is going to take the stand, that got everybody's attention.

SPEAKER_00 08:40 - 08:44

Tell me you're thinking about, I'm going to get on the stand and I am going to testify.

SPEAKER_00 08:44 - 08:45

And were you nervous?

SPEAKER_01 08:45 - 08:46

Oh, yeah, I was definitely nervous.

SPEAKER_00 08:46 - 08:47

Were you nervous?

SPEAKER_01 08:47 - 08:48

Don't get me wrong.

SPEAKER_01 08:48 - 08:49

I mean, I was nervous.

SPEAKER_01 08:49 - 08:52

Any courtroom makes me nervous because that's not where I want to be, really.

SPEAKER_00 08:52 - 08:53

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_01 08:53 - 08:53

100%.

SPEAKER_01 08:53 - 09:07

But no, I knew that, you know, once I took the stand, actually, when we delayed the lawsuit and it became, you know, people became aware that we were suing NASCAR, I was all in.

SPEAKER_01 09:07 - 09:09

I was aggressively going to win.

SPEAKER_01 09:09 - 09:17

You know, that was my, I became a competitor all over again is that, first of all, I wouldn't sue you if I didn't think we had a good case, you know, and we had a good case.

SPEAKER_01 09:17 - 09:17

Yes.

SPEAKER_01 09:17 - 09:25

Now, I like to have convinced my partners to stick with me, you know, and fight this fight.

SPEAKER_01 09:26 - 09:28

But a lot of them had different reasons why they couldn't.

SPEAKER_01 09:29 - 09:34

But that didn't deteriorate why I felt like this fight was needed, you know.

SPEAKER_01 09:34 - 09:36

And I was going to fight even harder.

SPEAKER_01 09:36 - 09:44

And if I got kicked out, at least I made people aware that change needs to happen in this sport, you know, and I think it's lopsided.

SPEAKER_01 09:44 - 09:50

And, you know, so I went in with the idea that, I don't care, even if I lost, I won.

SPEAKER_00 09:50 - 09:51

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 09:51 - 09:52

I look at the cars.

SPEAKER_00 09:52 - 09:54

Have you ever even been in a car?

SPEAKER_00 09:54 - 09:56

It seems like your body wouldn't fit in a car.

SPEAKER_01 09:57 - 09:57

I can't. I can't fit.

SPEAKER_00 09:57 - 09:59

So you've never been in a car and never driven?

SPEAKER_01 09:59 - 10:00

No.

SPEAKER_00 10:00 - 10:01

Do you want to?

SPEAKER_00 10:01 - 10:02

I wish I could.

SPEAKER_00 10:02 - 10:03

If you could, would you?

SPEAKER_01 10:03 - 10:05

I probably, yeah, I would want to.

SPEAKER_01 10:05 - 10:16

But, you know, knowing my competitors' uses, you know, I would probably try to go as fast as Denny Hamlin and some of these other guys, knowing I don't have the talent to do so, I'd probably run straight into that wall.

SPEAKER_01 10:16 - 10:20

But that doesn't change my desire.

SPEAKER_01 10:20 - 10:21

You know, I love the sport.

SPEAKER_00 10:22 - 10:22

Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_00 10:23 - 10:29

I think it's so cool that you love the sport because I think, because you love it, I think it's going to be, it will influence other people to love it.

SPEAKER_00 10:29 - 10:35

Is there a part of you, any part of you, you said when you left you wanted to retire, you wanted a quieter life.

SPEAKER_00 10:35 - 10:37

You had had enough, it seems, of the spotlight.

SPEAKER_00 10:37 - 10:38

True?

SPEAKER_00 10:38 - 10:38

Right.

SPEAKER_00 10:39 - 10:40

Do you have that with NASCAR?

SPEAKER_00 10:40 - 10:41

Is it a quieter life?

SPEAKER_01 10:42 - 10:52

It's a quieter life where I'm not really the show, even though as of late, you know, I've been in the forefront a lot more than I probably anticipated.

SPEAKER_01 10:52 - 10:56

But I think the sport needs it to some degree, and my team needs it.

SPEAKER_01 10:56 - 11:01

And I want them to see the passion that I have for winning and for the, you know, being a part of the team.

SPEAKER_01 11:02 - 11:13

When I say I wanted to retire and get to a quieter life, I wanted to get away from basketball in terms of what I represented in that, in that arena and what, you know, how big I've gotten.

SPEAKER_01 11:13 - 11:17

And it was such a huge burden for me in that sport.

SPEAKER_01 11:18 - 11:32

Here, the burden's not quite the same, you know, and I'm not, I'm not in that same realm, even though it has evolved to be that now because of the lawsuit, obviously because of the awareness that I'm being, I'm bringing to NASCAR.

SPEAKER_01 11:32 - 11:37

It's still not the same as me playing in Chicago and, you know, those types of things.

SPEAKER_01 11:38 - 11:42

But it's something that, that I think keeps me alive.

SPEAKER_00 11:43 - 11:43

Vibrant.

SPEAKER_01 11:43 - 11:44

Vibrant.

SPEAKER_00 11:44 - 11:44

Fired up.

SPEAKER_01 11:44 - 11:45

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00 11:45 - 11:47

When you say burden, what do you mean burden?

SPEAKER_01 11:47 - 11:59

The burden of living a certain way, you know, living up to, trying to maintain whatever everybody's perspective is for you or was for you, that is a, that is a burden, you know.

SPEAKER_01 11:59 - 12:01

And it's a lot of people that have to endure that.

SPEAKER_01 12:01 - 12:04

And there's a certain period of time that you can go through it.

SPEAKER_01 12:04 - 12:08

And then at some point in time, you say, I'm tired of, you know, I'm tired of doing that.

SPEAKER_00 12:08 - 12:09

And I have nothing left to prove.

SPEAKER_00 12:09 - 12:11

I have nothing left to prove.

SPEAKER_01 12:11 - 12:11

Nothing at all.

SPEAKER_00 12:11 - 12:17

Is there, is there a teeny tiny part of you that misses basketball, that misses, that wishes you could pick up a ball?

SPEAKER_01 12:17 - 12:18

Oh, 100%.

SPEAKER_01 12:18 - 12:20

It's not just a teeny, it's a huge beast.

SPEAKER_01 12:20 - 12:32

But I, I, I, I've compensated that, that, that feeling through NASCAR or through fishing that I go, and fishing, but that urge to dream that if I, I wish I can still pick up a basketball.

SPEAKER_00 12:33 - 12:34

You would still, you would.

SPEAKER_01 12:34 - 12:35

Oh, I would love to do that.

SPEAKER_00 12:35 - 12:36

You would?

SPEAKER_01 12:36 - 12:36

Believe me.

SPEAKER_01 12:36 - 12:38

My competitive juices is, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 12:38 - 12:39

I would definitely love to do that.

SPEAKER_00 12:39 - 12:40

You're considered the great.

SPEAKER_00 12:40 - 12:42

Do you think there's room for more than one great?

SPEAKER_00 12:42 - 12:44

Is there room for more than one goat in basketball?

SPEAKER_01 12:45 - 12:47

There's no such thing as goat, you know, to me.

SPEAKER_00 12:47 - 12:47

No such thing?

SPEAKER_01 12:47 - 12:48

Not to me.

SPEAKER_01 12:48 - 12:55

It's only because I think, you know, we are transcended from other people, other, other athletes.

SPEAKER_01 12:55 - 12:58

We learn from other athletes, we progress the game as we move further.

SPEAKER_01 12:59 - 13:02

To say that one is better than the other, it's not really right.

SPEAKER_00 13:02 - 13:07

Do you think for many people, there's a stigma still associated with NASCAR racing?

SPEAKER_00 13:08 - 13:13

Do you think there is a stigma, number one, and do you think that you can change it or that it needs to be changed?

SPEAKER_01 13:14 - 13:15

I'm pretty sure there is a stigma.

SPEAKER_01 13:15 - 13:16

I think it's changing.

SPEAKER_01 13:17 - 13:20

I think, you know, generationally, you know, change has to happen.

SPEAKER_01 13:21 - 13:24

You know, it's how you connect to that next generation is going to be the biggest key.

SPEAKER_01 13:25 - 13:31

I think that's where NASCAR is going to be challenging, where we all can help, you know, because of, you know, change.

SPEAKER_01 13:31 - 13:39

You know, being able to connect to more African Americans watching NASCAR or more, you know, people getting involved, young.

SPEAKER_01 13:39 - 13:43

I mean, to me, that's where I think change is going to happen, you know.

SPEAKER_01 13:43 - 13:55

And the perception of this whole thing that we're doing now and us winning, I think it's a step towards that, you know, people watching NASCAR that they never watched before because, obviously, because we're winning.

SPEAKER_01 13:55 - 13:57

I mean, that's a part of the change.

SPEAKER_00 13:57 - 13:59

Because you're winning and because you're you.

SPEAKER_01 14:00 - 14:01

That's a part of it.

SPEAKER_00 14:01 - 14:02

You have something to do with it.

SPEAKER_01 14:02 - 14:03

I will.

SPEAKER_01 14:04 - 14:05

As long as I win.
